Solution of Radiation and Convection Heat-Transfer Problems

Computer program P5399B developed to accommodate variety of fin-type heat conduction applications involving radiative or convective boundary conditions with additionally imposed local heat flux. Program also accommodates significant variety of one-dimensional heat-transfer problems not corresponding specifically to fin-type applications. Program easily accommodates all but few specialized one-dimensional heat-transfer analyses as well as many twodimensional analyses.

Recent developments in thermal analysis of large space structures

A numerical procedure for analysis of shadowed space heating of sparse structures, SSQ, is discussed. The SSQ program avoids inordinate computational complexity by confining attention to a single elemental location on a structural member of interest throughout an entire orbital period, proceeding then to similar treatment of individual alternate locations. The procedure considers a spacecraft in circular orbit and assumes fixed-Earth orientation of the spacecraft. Shadow orientation and interval duration, merged shadows, and computation of solar heat flux and thermal response are addressed. The output options of the SSQ FORTRAN 5 program and its efficiency are discussed. Application of the system to the analysis of a parabolic expandable truss antenna is considered.

Comparative thermal analysis of alternate Cryogenic Fluid Management Experiment (CFME) configurations

The Cryogenic Fluid Management Experiment (CFME) was analyzed to assess the feasibility and advisability of deleting the vapor cooled shield (VCS) from the baseline CFME insulation and pressure control system. Two alternate concepts of CFME insulation and pressure control, neither of which incorporated the VCS, were investigated. The first concept employed a thermodynamic vent system (TVS) to throttle the flow through an internal wall mounted heat exchanger (HX) within the pressure vessel to decrease boiloff and pressure rise rate, while the second concept utilized a TVS without an internal heat exchanger. Only the first concept was viable. Its performance was assessed for a seven day mission and found to be satisfactory. It was also concluded that VCS development costs would be greater than for an internal HX installation. Based upon the above comparisons, the HX was recommended as a replacement for the VCS.

Vector sweep

Program is numerical procedure for calculating radiation/geometrical configuration factors and/or space-environmental heat-flux histories. System can accomodate complex systems of diverse geometric shapes residing in unlimited variety of mutual shadow conditions. Basic analytical device is finite-difference employment of unit-sphere method of calculating configuration factors.

Variable boundary II heat conduction

Computer program for solving both transient and steady-state heat transfer problems is presented. Specific applications of computer program are described. Formulation for individual nodes of solid medium for heat balance is presented. Diffusion equation is solved for all nodes simultaneously at finite increments of time.
