Toward understanding the dimensional crossover of canonical spin-glass thin films

Spin-glass thin films exhibit many features different from the bulk. The freezing temperatures of spin-glass films are suppressed for reduced thickness and follow the Kenning relation. The dynamics are altered near the vacuum interface. These phenomena are closely related to the lower critical dimension of spin glasses, the spin-glass correlation length, and the dimensional crossover from d = 3 to d = 2. In this article, we review the experimental facts and theoretical perspectives for spin-glass thin films. We focus on canonical spin-glass systems with the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in a nonmagnetic host. Open questions to be addressed are emphasized.

Evidence for temperature chaos in spin glasses

We study the field cooled magnetization of a CuMn spin glass (SG) under temperature perturbations. The T-cycling curves are compared with the reference curve without temperature cycling. There is a crossover from the cumulative aging region to noncumulative aging region as the temperature change is increased. The cumulative aging range scales with the chaos length, ℓ c , becoming comparable to the correlation length, ξ, at the crossover boundary. The extracted chaos exponent, ζ=1.1, is in agreement with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our results strongly suggest temperature chaos exists in real SG systems.

Extraction of the spin-glass free-energy landscape from $1/f$ noise measurements

The 1/f resistance noise has been measured in thin CuMn (13.5 at.%) spin-glass films. The temperature and frequency dependence have been analyzed in terms of the landscape of free-energy barriers. Here this analysis provides the full barrier distribution for various thin film thicknesses between 10 nm and 80 nm. The free-energy barrier height distribution's width and energy position have been determined. Contrary to previous models with fixed shape and energy, the free-energy landscape is described by a distribution of barriers that both shifts and changes shape as the temperature is reduced. The dependence of this distribution is in contrast with recent predictions. Using the fluctuation dissipation theorem, the 1/f measurements connect with χ", displaying agreement with other direct measurements of the latter.

Collapse of the waiting time effect in a spin glass

Waiting time measurements are reported here for a bulk polycrystalline sample of the spin glass Cu 0.95 Mn 0.05 . We observe a suppression of aging as the glass temperature is approached from below. These results are interpreted in terms of a spin-glass correlation length approaching and reaching crystallite sizes. They provide a direct experimental connection between the correlation length scale and relaxation times in the spin-glass state. In particular, these measurements track the value of the dynamic critical exponent as the system transitions from the critical temperature regime to its low-temperature, quasistatic nonequilibrium phase.
