Quantum subspace expansion in the presence of hardware noise

Finding ground state energies on current quantum processing units (QPUs) using algorithms such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) continues to pose challenges. Hardware noise severely affects both the expressivity and trainability of parameterized quantum circuits, limiting them to shallow depths in practice. Here, we demonstrate that both issues can be addressed by synergistically integrating VQE with a quantum subspace expansion, allowing for an optimal balance between quantum and classical computing capabilities and costs. We perform a systematic benchmark analysis of the iterative quantum-assisted eigensolver in the presence of hardware noise. We determine ground state energies of 1D and 2D mixed-field Ising spin models on noisy simulators and the IBM QPUs ibmq_quito (5 qubits) and ibmq_guadalupe (16 qubits). To maximize accuracy, we propose a suitable criterion to select the subspace basis vectors according to the trace of the noisy overlap matrix. Finally, we show how to systematically approach the exact solution by performing controlled quantum error mitigation based on probabilistic error reduction on the noisy backend fake_guadalupe.

Anisotropic multiband superconductivity in 2 M − WS 2 probed by controlled disorder

The intrinsically superconducting Dirac semimetal 2 M − WS 2 is a promising candidate for realizing proximity-induced topological superconductivity in its protected surface states. A precise characterization of the bulk superconducting state is essential to understand the nature of surface superconductivity in the system. Here, we report a detailed experimental study of the temperature-dependent London penetration depth, λ ( T ) , the upper critical field, H c 2 ( T ) , and the effects of nonmagnetic disorder on these quantities, as well as on the superconducting transition temperature T c in single crystals of 2 M − WS 2 . We observe a power-law variation of λ ( T ) ∝ T 3 at temperatures below 0.35 T c . Nonmagnetic pointlike disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at various doses results in a significant suppression of T c . These observations are markedly different from expectations for a fully gapped isotropic s − wave superconductor. Together with the substantial increase of slope, d H c 2 / d T | T = T c , with increasing disorder, our results suggest a strongly anisotropic s + + multiband superconducting state. These results have direct consequences for the expected proximity-induced superconductivity of the topological surface states. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Ab-initio simulations of coherent phonon-induced pumping of carriers in zirconium pentatelluride

Abstract Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe 5 . We show that a coherent A 1g Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau–Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe 5 at low temperature.
