ISO observations of Titan with SWS/grating

The observations of Titan performed by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) short wavelength spectrometer (SWS), in the 2 micrometer to 45 micrometer region using the grating mode, are reported on. Special attention is given to data from Titan concerning 7 micrometer to 45 micrometer spectral resolution. Future work for improving Titan's spectra investigation is suggested.

Collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter observed by the NASA infrared telescope facility

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Infrared Telescope Facility was used to investigate the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter from 12 July to 7 August 1994. Strong thermal infrared emission lasting several minutes was observed after the impacts of fragments C, G, and R. All impacts warmed the stratosphere and some the troposphere up to several degrees. The abundance of stratospheric ammonia increased by more than 50 times. Impact-related particles extended up to a level where the atmospheric pressure measured several millibars. The north polar near-infrared aurora brightened by nearly a factor of 5 a week after the impacts.

AAT Observations of Shoemaker Levy-9 Collisions with Jupiter

We will use the Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT)to observe the collisions of the fragmented comet Shoemaker Levy-9 (SL9) with Jupiter on July 16-22.

The GEISA spectroscopic line parameters data bank in 1984

The 1984 update of the GEISA data bank, containing spectroscopic information on 323,521 lines corresponding to 36 molecules and 79 isotopic species in the spectal range 3 x 10 to the -6th/cm to 17,879/cm, is discussed. The bank compiles parameters describing the radiation absorption or emission properties of gases involved in the atmospheres of the earth and planets. Values of a new exponent which summarized the variation of the collision halfwidth with temperature are given for 10 molecules. Six new molecules, HOCl, N2, CH3Cl, H2O2, H2S, and HCOOH, are included in this edition.

Spectroscopic line parameters of NH3 and PH3 in the far infrared

NH3 and PH3 rotation and rotation-inversion line parameters in the far to medium IR are calculated for remote sounding purposes of planetary atmospheres; 1607 lines of (N-14)H3, 362 lines of (N-15)H3 and 325 lines of PH3 are compiled. The absolute intensity formulation has been reviewed in the case of rotation and rotation-inversion lines of molecules with C(3v) symmetry. The justification for the general agreement between the authors, and comparisons with other published expressions are given.

Thermal Structure of Jupiter and Saturn

Temperatures in the sensible regions of the atmospheres of the outer planets are quite cold. The temperature structures for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, derived from the equilibrium models are presented in preparation. The vertical temperature profiles for Jupiter and Saturn, the molecular spectroscopic data which form the basis for this type of analysis, and the problems involved with these models for molecular absorption and with the recovery technique in general, are discussed. Results for Jupiter and Saturn from the Pioneer and Voyager infrared experiments are also presented.
