Technical challenges involved in supporting the Lambda Point Experiment

The Lambda Point Experiment (LPE) is one of the instruments included in the U.S. Microgravity Payload Mission 1 planned for one of the Space Shuttle flights in 1992. The objective of the experiment is to measure the heat capacity of liquid helium within a narrow interval around the transition between superfluid and normal helium (the lambda point) with an unprecedented temperature resolution of about 10 to the -10th. Multiple technical challenges are presented in the areas of structural support, safety analysis, and modal frequency tests. This paper describes the technical challenges of JPL's multidisciplinary involvement in support of these experiments in microgravity.

Evaluation of ERDA-sponsored coal feed system development

Coal feeders were evaluated based upon criteria such as technical feasibility, performance (i.e. ability to meet process requirements), projected life cycle costs, and projected development cost. An initial set of feeders was selected based on the feeders' cost savings potential compared with baseline lockhopper systems. Additional feeders were considered for selection based on: (1) increasing the probability of successful feeder development; (2) application to specific processes; and (3) technical merit. A coal feeder development program is outlined.

Shear dampers for deflections of micro-inch magnitudes

The rotation of the TV camera on the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS77) spacecraft will excite the long magnetometer and heavy RTG booms which are slightly damped perturbances that have long settling times. To ensure clear TV pictures additional damping was required over micro-inch displacements and at low frequencies. The solution incorporated elastomeric shear dampers at the base of these booms which possessed high loss tangent values in the expected frequency and temperature ranges. Presented are the shear damper design, results of full scale horizontal boom tests and relative effects of damper sizing and temperature. Boom instrumentation and excitation used for the full scale tests are also discussed.
