Near-threshold resonances in C 11 and the B 10 ( p , α ) Be 7 aneutronic reaction

The nucleus 11 C plays an important role in the boron-proton fusion reactor environment as a catalyzer of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be reaction which, by producing a long-lived isotope of 7 Be, poisons the aneutronic fusion process 11 B(p,2α) 4 He. The low-energy cross section of 10 B(p,α) 7 Be depends on the near-threshold states 7/2$^{+}_{1}$, 5/2$^{+}_{2}$, 5/2$^{+}_{3}$ in 11 C whose properties are primarily known from the indirect measurements. Here we investigate the continuum-coupling induced collectivization of these resonances in the shell model embedded in the continuum. We predict a significant enhancement of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be cross section at energies accessible to the laser-driven hot plasma facilities.

Nuclear Forces for Precision Nuclear Physics: A Collection of Perspectives

This is a collection of perspective pieces contributed by the participants of the Institute for Nuclear Theory’s Program on Nuclear Physics for Precision Nuclear Physics which was held virtually from April 19 to May 7, 2021. The collection represents the reflections of a vibrant and engaged community of researchers on the status of theoretical research in low-energy nuclear physics, the challenges ahead, and new ideas and strategies to make progress in nuclear structure and reaction physics, effective field theory, lattice QCD, quantum information, and quantum computing. Please note the contributed pieces solely reflect the perspectives of the respective authors and do not represent the viewpoints of the Institute for Nuclear theory or the organizers of the program.

White paper: from bound states to the continuum

This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program 'From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory'. One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. Here, the many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections.
