New constraint on the Np 237 ( n , γ ) Np 238 integral cross section using the Godiva-IV critical assembly

Accurate knowledge of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section at fast neutron energies is important for applied nuclear science. The presently available experimental data has large disagreements in the fast neutron region. Perform a model-independent measurement of the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section using a well characterized fast neutron source and compare the result with previous measurements and current nuclear data evaluations. Provide an integral measurement that can be used as a benchmark for current evaluations. Multiple samples of 237 Np were irradiated in the Godiva-IV critical assembly. Following the irradiation, the samples placed in a γ-ray counting setup and the γ-rays emitted from the decay of 238 Np were measured over a time period of approximately 7 days. Multiple γ-ray decay branches of 238 Np were observed. The observed activity of 238 Np was used to calculate the amount of 238 Np produced during the irradiation via the 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np reaction and an integral cross section of 342(11) mb was measured for the Godiva-IV neutron spectrum. Further, the 238 Np half-life has been measured with a result of 50.31(5) hours. The 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np integral cross section measured in this work is in agreement with overlapping 1σ error bands to ENDF/B-VIII.0. However, the measured value is 3σ away from the calculated integral cross section using JENDL-5. This measurement offers a reliable benchmark for future 237 Np(n, γ) 238 Np cross section evaluations.

237 Np Fission Spectrum Cumulative Fission Product Yield Measurement Using Godiva IV Critical Assembly

Precise integral measurement of fast neutron-induced fission product yields for various actinides is of high interest for applied nuclear science. The goal of this effort is to improve uncertainties in fission product yield values of 237 Np. Fission was induced in a NpO 2 (NO 3 ) target using the Godiva IV critical assembly in burst mode. The irradiated sample was transferred to a high-resolution γ-ray detection setup within 50 minutes. γ-ray list mode data was collected from 50 minutes to 1 week after the irradiation. γ-ray spectroscopy was performed to analyze the time dependent γ-ray yields using an automated peak search algorithm to identify isotopes by their decay γ-ray energy and half-life. Finally, the initial activity for each isotope identified was used to calculate their fission product yield.

Quick Look Report of Godiva U233 shot March 2022 Data Collection Activities

This report discussing the March 2022 irradiation of U233 on the Godiva critical assembly using burst mode and subsequent analysis of the fission products starting at 65 minutes post irradiation, and ending 12 days later. The Short-Lived Fission Product Yield (SLFPY) project is one of many efforts under the Nuclear Physics Multi-Lab and related Venture Project. The objective of the SLFPY project is to provide improved measurements of fission product yields for select nuclides. The SLFPY project consists of measurement and analysis campaigns. To produce fission data, samples of actinide material are irradiated in a high-flux neutron environment. These samples are quickly placed in front of a detection system where both gamma singles and coincidence spectra are collected as a function of time. Gamma spectroscopy is performed on the irradiated material on site near the irradiation facility, starting as soon as feasible after the irradiation and continuing for 7 days or longer. Following the data collection, time-dependent fission yield analyses are performed using gamma-ray spectroscopy. This document summarizes the measurement campaign performed March 21 - April 4, 2022 where sub-gram quantities of 233 U nitrate (UO 2 (NO 3 ) 2 ) were irradiated in the Godiva reactor. The Godiva burst #2076 conducted under experiment IER 504 had a temperature change of +156 degrees Celsius, lasted 13.32 microseconds, and had a reactivity of $\$$1.089. The targets consisted of uranium oxide solution deposited in a quartz tube and packed with quartz wool. The flame-sealed quartz ampoules were used to contain the uranium samples for the irradiation and count activities. On March 22, 2022, at 10:27:00 a.m. the three uranium ampoules, along with a witness foil pack, were irradiated in the Godiva critical assembly using burst mode operations.

Improved Limit on Tensor Currents in the Weak Interaction from Li 8 β Decay

Here, the electroweak interaction in the standard model is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this Letter, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the $β-\bar{ν}$ correlation of trapped 8 Li ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find $a_{β\barν}$ = - 0.3325 ± 0.0013 stat ± 0.0019 syst at 1σ for the case of coupling to right-handed neutrinos (C T = -C$^{'}_{T}$), which is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Levels in 125 Cd populated by the β decay of 125 m Ag and 125 Ag

Here, the β decay of 125 m, 125 Ag into levels in 125 Cd was investigated at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). Uranium-238 targets were bombarded with 50-MeV protons with an intensity of 15 μ A, and the induced fission products were mass separated and deposited on a moving tape in the center of the VANDLE array consisting of γ detectors and plastic scintillators. A partial decay scheme has been assigned for both β decay of the (9/2 + ) ground state of 125 Ag and its low-lying (1/2 - ) isomer, with the energy of the low-lying (11/2 - ) isomeric state in 125 Cd assigned as 188.5 keV. In addition, β -delayed neutron emission probabilities were also determined to be 1.2(2)% for the (9/2 + ) 125 Ag ground state and 4.6(10)% for the (1/2 - ) isomer, which are substantially lower than the previously reported value.

Integral Measurement of the 237 Np($n$, γ) 238 Np Cross Section with Fast Neutrons

Accurate knowledge of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section at fast neutron energies is important for applied nuclear science. The presently available experimental data has large disagreements in the fast neutron region. A measurement of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section was performed using a well characterized fast neutron source and the results was compared with previous measurements and current nuclear data evaluations. This will provide an integral measurement that can be used as a benchmark for current evaluations. The observed activity of 238 Np was used to calculate the amount of 238 Np produced during the irradiation via the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np and an integral cross section of 359(10) mb was measured. The 238 Np half-life has been measured with a result of 50.34(7) hours. An integral measurement of the 237 Np($n$; γ) 238 Np cross section has been measured. This result has been compared to the calculated integral cross section using the ENDF/BVIII.0 and JENDL-4.0 evaluated cross sections and found to be in good agreement with ENDF/BVIII.0 value of 367 mb. The JENDL-4.0 evaluation yields a value of 312 mb, which is significantly lower than the measured cross section.

Long-lived isomeric states and quasiparticle band structures in neutron-rich 162,164 Gd nuclei from β decay

Neutron-rich nuclei 162,164 Eu were produced by bombarding a proton beam on a 238 U target at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and mass separating the 162,164 Eu products. New level schemes and new γ-ray transitions of the daughters 162,164 Gd were identified from β-decay spectroscopy studies. Additionally, half-lives of the 162,164 Eu were remeasured to clarify the previous ambiguous results. Two quasiparticle band structures were built and compared with neighboring nuclei. The β and γ bands were extended in 162 Gd and a γ band was extended in 164 Gd. Half-lives of the isomeric states at (6 - ) 1449 keV in 162 Gd and (4 - ) 1096 keV in 164 Gd were measured to be 99(3) μs and 0.56(3) μs, respectively. Projected shell model calculations were performed and found to be in good agreement with all of the experimental data.

New transitions and levels for 163 Tb obtained from β-decay studies

Transitions in 163 Tb following β decay of 163 Gd were obtained as part of investigations of γ rays emitted following 163 Euβ decay to 163 Gd. In this work, detailed analysis of the low-energy structure of 163 Tb has been carried out with these data to expand previous β-decay studies and reactions studies of levels in 163 Tb. Data were collected at the LeRIBSS station of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with an array of four Clover HPGe detectors for γ rays and two plastic scintillators for β detection. The γ rays were identified as belonging to 163 Gd and 163 Tb via mass selection and γ-γ-β, γ-γ, or γ-x-ray coincidence. In total, 38 new γ-ray transitions were observed in 163 Tb from 15 newly identified levels and 12 previously identified levels. Potential energy surface calculations were performed which support a rigid prolate deformation. Previously identified unplaced transitions in 163 Tb have been placed within the level scheme of 163 Tb and additional states and transitions have been identified.

Identification of new transitions and levels in 163 Gd from $β$-decay studies

Background: Neutron-rich nuclei in the mass region around A = 160 have been and will continue to be of interest for the study of nuclear structure because of the rapid onset of deformation between 88 and 90 neutrons. The observation of detailed changes in nuclear structures within this mass region has provided and will continue to provide insight into the nuclear force. Purpose: Investigations of γ rays emitted following Eu 163 β -decay to Gd 163 have been performed for evaluation of the nuclear structure of Gd 163 . Method: Data were collected at the LeRIBSS station of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with an array of four Clover HPGe detectors for γ -rays and two plastic scintillators for β detection. The γ rays were identified as belonging to Gd 163 via mass selection and γ – γ – β , x-ray- γ , or γ – γ coincidences. Results: In total 107 new γ -ray transitions were observed in Gd 163 from 53 newly identified levels. Conclusions: We report the structure of Gd 163 has been identified for the first time. This structure has been evaluated in comparison to projected shell model, and potential energy surface calculations with good agreement.

$β$-delayed neutron emission studies of 137,138 I and 144,145 Cs performed with trapped ions

A detailed study of the β-delayed neutron emission properties of 137,138 I and 144,145 Cs has been performed by confining ions in the Beta-decay Paul Trap. The daughter ions following β decay emerge from the trapped-ion cloud with negligible scattering allowing reconstruction of the recoil-ion energy from the time of flight. From this information, the neutron-emission branching ratios and neutron-energy spectra were deduced. The results for the 137 I and 144,145 Cs decays are in agreement with previous results performed using direct neutron-detection techniques. In the case of 138 I, a branching ratio of 6.18(50)% is obtained, yielding a value consistent with the more recent results, which are a factor of two larger than measurements made prior to 1978.

$β$-delayed-neutron studies of 135,136 Sb and 140 I performed with trapped ions

In this work, Beta-delayed-neutron $(βn)$ spectroscopy was performed using the Beta-decay Paul Trap and an array of radiation detectors. The $βn$ branching ratios and energy spectra for 135,136 Sb and 140 I were obtained by measuring the time of flight of recoil ions emerging from the trapped ion cloud. These nuclei are located at the edge of an isotopic region identified as having $βn$ branching ratios that impact the $r$-process abundance pattern around the A ≈ 130 peak. For 135,136 Sb and 140 I, $βn$ branching ratios of 14.6(13)%, 17.6(29)%, and 7.6(28)% were determined, respectively. The $βn$ energy spectra obtained for 135 Sb and 140 I are compared with results from direct neutron measurements, and the $βn$ energy spectrum for 136 Sb has been measured for the first time.
