Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Proximate spin liquid and fractionalization in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe 2

The Heisenberg triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid and its phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. Here we demonstrate that a spin-half delafossite material, namely, KYbSe 2 , shows close proximity to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Using neutron scattering, we identify a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound within the measured spectra. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data indicates multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbours, and an analysis of its magnetic-exchange couplings reveals close proximity to the theoretical quantum spin-liquid phase. The key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger boson theory and tensor network calculations with a substantial next-nearest-neighbour coupling. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the Brillouin-zone K point shows a scaling collapse down to 0.3 K, indicating the existence of a second-order quantum phase transition. Finally, comparing this with previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at a larger next-nearest-neighbour coupling is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO 3 , with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced via La substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Furthermore, Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y 1-$x$ La $x$ TiO 3 as a model system for the study of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Neutron scattering study of fluctuating and static spin correlations in the anisotropic spin glass Fe 2 Ti O 5

The anisotropic spin-glass transition, in which spin freezing is observed only along the c axis in pseudobrookite Fe 2 TiO 5 , has long been perplexing because the Fe 3+ moments (d 5 ) are expected to be isotropic. Recently, neutron diffraction demonstrated that surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic nanoregions coalesce above the glass transition temperature T g ≈55K, and a model was proposed in which the freezing of the surfboard magnetization fluctuations leads to the anisotropic spin-glass state. Given this model, we have carried out high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-spin correlations to understand the temperature dependence of the intrasurfboard spin dynamics on neutron (picosecond) timescales. Here, in this paper, we report on the temperature-dependence of the spin fluctuations measured from single-crystal Fe 2 TiO 5 . Strong quasi-elastic magnetic scattering, arising from intrasurfboard correlations, is observed well above T g . The spin fluctuations possess a steep energy–wave vector relation and are indicative of strong exchange interactions, consistent with the large Curie-Weiss temperature. As the temperature approaches T g from above, a shift in spectral weight from inelastic to elastic scattering is observed. At various temperatures between 4 and 300 K, a characteristic relaxation rate of the fluctuations is determined. Despite the freezing of most of the spin correlations, an inelastic contribution remains even at base temperature, signifying the presence of fluctuating intrasurfboard spin correlations to at least T/T g ≈0.1 , consistent with an energy landscape that is a hybrid between conventional and geometrically frustrated spin glasses.

Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.

Magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO single crystal studied by neutron and x-ray scattering

We report the magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO crystals, the basis compound for one of the oxypnictide superconductors, using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). We find the structural tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition at T-S = 147K, the AFM phase transition of the Fe moments at T-Fe = 72K, and the Pr AFM phase transition at T-Pr = 21K. Combined high-resolution neutron diffraction and XRMS show unambiguously that the Pr moments point parallel to the longer orthorhombic a axis and order antiferromagnetically along the a axis but ferromagnetically along the b and c directions in the stripelike AFM order. The temperature-dependent magnetic order parameter of the Pr moments shows no evidence for a reorientation of moments.

Two-dimensional overdamped fluctuations of the soft perovskite lattice in CsPbBr 3

Lead halide perovskites exhibit structural instabilities and large atomic fluctuations thought to impact their optical and thermal properties, yet detailed structural and temporal correlations of their atomic motions remain poorly understood. Here, these correlations are resolved in CsPbBr 3 crystals using momentum-resolved neutron and X-ray scattering measurements as a function of temperature, complemented with first-principles simulations. We uncover a striking network of diffuse scattering rods, arising from the liquid-like damping of low-energy Br-dominated phonons, reproduced in our simulations of the anharmonic phonon self-energy. Here, these overdamped modes cover a continuum of wave vectors along the edges of the cubic Brillouin zone, corresponding to two-dimensional sheets of correlated rotations in real space, and could represent precursors to proposed two-dimensional polarons. Further, these motions directly impact the electronic gap edge states, linking soft anharmonic lattice dynamics and optoelectronic properties. These results provide insights into the highly unusual atomic dynamics of halide perovskites, relevant to further optimization of their optical and thermal properties.

Competing Magnetic Interactions in the Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound MnBi 2 Te 4 is suggested to be the first realization of an AFM topological insulator. Here, we report on inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions in MnBi 2 Te 4 that possess ferromagnetic triangular layers with AFM interlayer coupling. The spin waves display a large spin gap and pairwise exchange interactions within the triangular layer are long ranged and frustrated by large next-nearest neighbor AFM exchange. The degree of frustration suggests proximity to a variety of magnetic phases, potentially including skyrmion phases, which could be accessed in chemically tuned compounds or upon the application of symmetry-breaking fields.
