Coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetic dimers in topological insulators

The addition of magnetic impurities in topological insulators (TIs) can drive ferromagnetic order that leads to quantum anomalous Hall transport well below the Curie temperature. The fragility of the quantized regime has been ascribed to the random nature of the magnetic moment distribution. Here, we refine this hypothesis by using inelastic neutron scattering and density-functional theory calculations to show that two antagonistic components define the magnetism in Mn-substituted SnTe, thereby limiting the effectiveness of dilute magnetic TIs. One component is strongly bound antiferromagnetic dimers that compete with ferromagnetic order. In conclusion, the other component consists of undimerized moments where ferromagnetic order develops via long-range interactions.

Spatially anisotropic 𝑆=1 square-lattice antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy realized in a Ni(II) pyrazine-𝑛,𝑛′-dioxide coordination polymer

The Ni(NCS) 2 (pyzdo) 2 coordination polymer is found to be an S = 1 spatially anisotropic square lattice with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. This conclusion is based upon considering in concert the experimental probes x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic-field-dependent heat capacity, muon-spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, neutron spectroscopy, and pulsed-field magnetization. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order develops at T N = 18.5 K. Although the samples are polycrystalline, there is an observable spin-flop transition and saturation of the magnetization at ≈80 T. Linear spin-wave theory yields spatially anisotropic exchanges within an AFM square lattice, J x =0.235 meV, J y =2.014 meV, and an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy D=−1.622 meV (after renormalization). The anisotropy of the exchanges is supported by density functional theory.

Field-tuned quantum renormalization of spin dynamics in the honeycomb lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet YbCl 3

The basis for our understanding of quantum magnetism has been the study of elegantly simple model systems. However, even for the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with isotropic spin interactions–one of the simplest model systems–a detailed understanding of quantum effects is still lacking. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the honeycomb lattice material YbCl 3 , we elucidate how quantum effects renormalize the single-magnon and multimagnon excitations and how this renormalization can be tuned and ultimately driven to the classical limit by applying a magnetic field. Additionally, our work reveals that the quantum effects tuned by the magnetic field not only renormalize the magnetic excitations but also induce a distinctive sharp feature inside the multimagnon continuum. From a more general perspective, this result demonstrates that structures within magnetic continua can occur over a wide experimental parameter space and can be used as a reliable means of identifying quantum phenomena.

Quantum disordered ground state in the triangular-lattice magnet NaRuO 2

It has long been hoped that spin liquid states might be observed in materials that realize the triangular lattice Hubbard model. However, weak spin-orbit coupling and other small perturbations often induce conventional spin freezing or magnetic ordering. Sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling, however, can renormalize the electronic wave function and induce anisotropic exchange interactions that promote magnetic frustration. Here we show that the cooperative interplay of spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects in the triangular lattice magnet NaRuO 2 produces an inherently fluctuating magnetic ground state. Despite the presence of a charge gap, we find that low-temperature spin excitations generate a metal-like term in the specific heat and a continuum of excitations in neutron scattering, reminiscent of spin liquid states previously found in triangular lattice organic magnets. Further cooling produces a crossover into a different, highly disordered, spin state whose dynamic spin autocorrelation function reflects persistent fluctuations. Furthermore, these findings establish NaRuO 2 as a cousin to organic, Heisenberg spin liquid compounds with a low-temperature crossover in quantum disorder.

Role of Magnetic Defects in Tuning Ground States of Magnetic Topological Insulators

Abstract Magnetic defects play an important, but poorly understood, role in magnetic topological insulators (TIs). For example, topological surface transport and bulk magnetic properties are controlled by magnetic defects in Bi 2 Se 3 ‐based dilute ferromagnetic (FM) TIs and MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT)‐based antiferromagnetic (AFM) TIs. Despite its nascent ferromagnetism, the inelastic neutron scattering data show that a fraction of the Mn defects in Sb 2 Te 3 form strong AFM dimer singlets within a quintuple block. The AFM superexchange coupling occurs via Mn–Te–Mn linear bonds and is identical to the AFM coupling between antisite defects and the FM Mn layer in MBT, establishing common interactions in the two materials classes. It is also found that the FM correlations in (Sb 1− x Mn x ) 2 Te 3 are likely driven by magnetic defects in adjacent quintuple blocks across the van der Waals gap. In addition to providing answers to long‐standing questions about the evolution of FM order in dilute TI, these results also show that the evolution of global magnetic order from AFM to FM in Sb‐substituted MBT is controlled by defect engineering of the intrablock and interblock coupling.

Direct prediction of inelastic neutron scattering spectra from the crystal structure*

Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is a powerful technique to study vibrational dynamics of materials with several unique advantages. However, analysis and interpretation of INS spectra often require advanced modeling that needs specialized computing resources and relevant expertise. This difficulty is compounded by the limited experimental resources available to perform INS measurements. In this work, we develop a machine-learning based predictive framework which is capable of directly predicting both one-dimensional INS spectra and two-dimensional INS spectra with additional momentum resolution. By integrating symmetry-aware neural networks with autoencoders, and using a large scale synthetic INS database, high-dimensional spectral data are compressed into a latent-space representation, and a high-quality spectra prediction is achieved by using only atomic coordinates as input. Our work offers an efficient approach to predict complex multi-dimensional neutron spectra directly from simple input; it allows for improved efficiency in using the limited INS measurement resources, and sheds light on building structure-property relationships in a variety of on-the-fly experimental data analysis scenarios.

High resolution ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations in La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3

La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 (LCMO30) is a perovskite manganite with a phase transition (T C = 238 K) between a paramagnetic insulator and a ferromagnetic metal. We use single-crystal, inelastic neutron scattering to refine previous work on the low energy (ℏω < 10 meV) magnetic excitations. At 300 K the spectrum consists of a diffusive ferromagnetic component at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone center coexisting with a quasielastic excitation located at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone edge. Both components are anti-correlated with ferromagnetic long-range order, showing weakened intensity at 215 K in the ferromagnetic phase. Polarized neutron scattering shows both features to be purely magnetic in origin. Furthermore, this indicates the simultaneous presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations (located, respectively, at the zone center and zone edge) in a three-dimensional perovskite, while this coexistence had been previously observed only in a bilayer compound.

High-pressure inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 - Clpyradine ) 4 ] B F 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3-Clpyradine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S=1 spin-chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-D quantum paramagnetic phase of the D/J phase diagram, where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. In this work, we extend the previous experiments to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find D/J increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-D phase.

Quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetism and anisotropic interlayer couplings in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator that combines a topologically nontrivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. Here, the inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals reported here describes rather complex magnetism in MBT. The magnetic anisotropy that controls the bulk and surface magnetic field response of MBT is found to have contributions from both single-ion and interlayer two-ion terms. A description of the quasi-two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires long-range, competing FM and AFM interactions and anomalous damping. While this might suggest carrier-mediated magnetic coupling, abinitio calculations in insulating MBT also find long-range interactions, and classical spin dynamics simulations suggest that magnetic vacancies are at least partially responsible for observations of anomalous damping near the zone boundary.

Magnetic properties and signatures of moment ordering in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2

The magnetic ground state and the crystalline electric field level scheme of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2 are investigated here. Below $T_N$ = 300 mK, KCeO 2 develops signatures of magnetic order in specific heat measurements and low energy inelastic neutron scattering data. Trivalent Ce 3+ ions in the $D_{3d}$ local environment of this compound exhibit large splittings among the lowest three 4$f^1$ Kramers doublets defining for the free ion the $\textit{J}$ = 5/2 sextet and a ground state doublet with dipole character, consistent with recent theoretical predictions by Eldeeb et al. [Phys. Rev. Materials 4, 124001 (2020)]. An unexplained, additional local mode appears, and potential origins of this anomalous mode are discussed.

Freezing of a Disorder Induced Spin Liquid with Strong Quantum Fluctuations

We report Sr2CuTe 0.5 W 0.5 O 6 is a square-lattice magnet with superexchange between S =$\frac{1}{2}$Cu 2+ spins mediated by randomly distributed Te and W ions. Here, using sub-K temperature and 20 μeV energy resolution neutron scattering experiments we show that this system transits from a gapless disorder-induced spin liquid to a new quantum state below T f =1.7(1) K, exhibiting a weak frozen moment of $\langle$S$\rangle$/S~0.1 and low energy dynamic susceptibility, χ"(ℏω), linear in energy which is surprising for such a weak freezing in this highly fluctuating quantum regime.

Magnetic excitations of the hybrid multiferroic (ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·D 2 O

We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the hybrid molecule-based multiferroic compound ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O in the zero-field incommensurate cycloidal phase and the high-field quasicollinear phase. The spontaneous electric polarization changes its direction concurrently with the field-induced magnetic transition, from mostly aligned with the crystallographic a axis to the c axis. To account for such a change in polarization direction, the underlying multiferroic mechanism was proposed to switch from the spin-current model induced via the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the p - d hybridization model. We perform a detailed analysis of the inelastic neutron data of ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O using linear spin-wave theory to quantify magnetic interaction strengths and investigate the possible impact of different multiferroic mechanisms on the magnetic couplings. Overall our result reveals that the spin dynamics of both multiferroic phases can be well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with easy-plane anisotropy. We do not find notable differences between the optimal model parameters of the two phases. The hierarchy of exchange couplings and the balance among frustrated interactions remain the same between two phases, suggesting that magnetic interactions in ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O are much more robust than the electric polarization in response to delicate reorganizations of the electronic degrees of freedom in an applied magnetic field.

Extended anharmonic collapse of phonon dispersions in SnS and SnSe

The lattice dynamics and high-temperature structural transition in SnS and SnSe are investigated via inelastic neutron scattering, high-resolution Raman spectroscopy and anharmonic first-principles simulations. We uncover a spectacular, extreme softening and reconstruction of an entire manifold of low-energy acoustic and optic branches across a structural transition, reflecting strong directionality in bonding strength and anharmonicity. Further, our results solve a prior controversy by revealing the soft-mode mechanism of the phase transition that impacts thermal transport and thermoelectric efficiency. Our simulations of anharmonic phonon renormalization go beyond low-order perturbation theory and capture these striking effects, showing that the large phonon shifts directly affect the thermal conductivity by altering both the phonon scattering phase space and the group velocities. These results provide a detailed microscopic understanding of phase stability and thermal transport in technologically important materials, providing further insights on ways to control phonon propagation in thermoelectrics, photovoltaics, and other materials requiring thermal management.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the layered semiconductor CrPS 4

Compounds with two-dimensional (2D) layers of magnetic ions weakly connected by van der Waals bonding offer routes to enhance quantum behavior, stimulating both fundamental and applied interest. CrPS 4 is one such magnetic van der Waals material, however, it has undergone only limited investigation. Here we present a comprehensive series of neutron scattering measurements to determine the magnetic structure and exchange interactions. The observed magnetic excitations allow a high degree of constraint on the model parameters not normally associated with measurements on a powder sample. The results demonstrate the 2D nature of the magnetic interactions, while also revealing the importance of interactions along 1D chains within the layers. The subtle role of competing interactions is observed, which manifest in a nontrivial magnetic transition and a tunable magnetic structure in a small applied magnetic field through a spin-flop transition. Our results on the bulk compound provide insights that can be applied to an understanding of the behavior of reduced layer CrPS 4 .

Spin excitations in the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO 2

In this work, we present a neutron scattering-based study of magnetic excitations and magnetic order in NaYbO 2 under the application of an external magnetic field. The crystal electric field-split J = 7=2 multiplet structure is determined, revealing a mixed |m z $\rangle$ ground state doublet and is consistent with a recent report Ding et al. Our measurements further suggest signatures of exchange effects in the crystal field spectrum, manifested by a small splitting in energy of the transition into the first excited doublet. The field-dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations across the transition from the quantum disordered ground state into the fluctuation driven ordered regime is analyzed. Signs of a first-order phase transition into a noncollinear ordered state are revealed at the upper-field phase boundary of the ordered regime, and higher order magnon scattering, suggestive of strong magnon-magnon interactions, is resolved within the previously reported up-up-down phase. Our results reveal a complex phase diagram of field-induced order and spin excitations within NaYbO 2 and demonstrate the dominant role of quantum fluctuations cross a broad range of fields within its interlayer frustrated triangular lattice.

3D scanning and 3D printing AlSi10Mg single crystal mounts for neutron scattering

Here, we present methods to quantify sample shapes and generate sample mounts as motivated by the needs of neutron scattering experiments. The 3D sample scanning was performed using photogrammetry and laser scanning, and a comparison is made between the two techniques. The aluminum alloy AlSi10Mg is shown to have favorable properties for many types of mounts used in neutron scattering. Parts were first prototyped with 3D plastic printers, and then, 3D AlSi10Mg prints were made. The final additively manufactured part holds the sample with more points of contact than is possible with traditional manufacturing. The goodness of fit between the mount and sample was measured by x-ray tomography.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 – Clpyridine ) 4 ] BF 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3–Clpyridine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S = 1 spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down to temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT as being in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of D/J to the large-D quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, 11B-enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields D/J = 1.51 and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy E (E/D ≈ 0.03, E/J ≈ 0.05). Here, these D, J, and E values place NBCT in the large-D QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.
