Fine structure in the α decay of $^{179}$Hg and $^{177}$Au

Abstract The$$\upalpha $$ α -decay fine structure of$$^{179}$$ 179 Hg and$$^{177}$$ 177 Au was studied by means of decay spectroscopy. Two experiments were performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä (JYFL), Finland, utilizing the recoil separator RITU and a digital data acquisition system. The heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reactions$$^{82}_{36}$$ 36 82 Kr + $$^{100}_{44}$$ 44 100 Ru and$$^{88}_{38}$$ 38 88 Kr + $$^{92}_{42}$$ 42 92 Mo were used to produce the$$^{179}$$ 179 Hg and$$^{177}$$ 177 Au nuclei, respectively. Studying the evaporation residues (ER, recoils)-$$\alpha _1$$ α 1 -$$\alpha _2$$ α 2 correlations and$$\upalpha $$ α -$$\gamma $$ γ coincidences, a new$$\upalpha $$ α decay with E$$_\alpha $$ α = 6156(10) keV was observed from$$^{179}$$ 179 Hg. This decay populates the (9/2$$^-$$ - ) excited state at an excitation energy of 131.3(5) keV in$$^{175}$$ 175 Pt. The internal conversion coefficient for the 131.3(5) keV transition de-exciting this state was measured for the first time. Regarding the$$^{177}$$ 177 Au nucleus, a new$$\upalpha $$ α decay with E$$_\alpha $$ α = 5998(9) keV was observed to populate the 156.1(6) keV excited state in$$^{173}$$ 173 Ir. Two de-excitation paths were observed from this excited state. Moreover, a new 215.7(13) keV transition was observed to depopulate the 424.4(13) keV excited state in$$^{173}$$ 173 Ir. Properties of the$$^{179}$$ 179 Hg and$$^{177}$$ 177 Au$$\upalpha $$ α decays were examined in a framework of reduced widths and hindrance factors. For clarity and simplicity, the spin and parity assignments (e.g.$$J^{\pi }$$ J π ) are presented without brackets throughout the text.

Decay of a microsecond seniority 3 isomeric state in Hf 155

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclide Hf 155 have been investigated in experiments performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The Hf 155 nuclei were produced in fusion-evaporation reactions induced by beams of 295 and 315 MeV Ni 58 ions bombarding an isotopically enriched Pd 102 target and separated using the recoil mass separator MARA. An isomeric state having a half-life of 510(30) ns was discovered and is interpreted as a seniority υ = 3 , ( π h 11 / 2 2 ⊗ ν f 7 / 2 ) 27 / 2 − configuration. The γ -ray transitions emitted in the deexcitation of the isomeric state to the ground state were identified and a level scheme was constructed, from which the excitation energy of the isomer was determined to be 2581.5(10) keV. A B ( E 2 ) value of 0.45(3) W.u. was deduced for the 105.4 keV transition depopulating the isomeric state. The deduced level scheme and B ( E 2 ) value are compared with systematics and shell-model calculations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Compound-Nucleus and Doorway-State Decays of β -Delayed Neutron Emitters K 51 , 52 , 53

We investigated decays of K 51 , 52 , 53 at the ISOLDE Decay Station at CERN in order to understand the mechanism of the β -delayed neutron-emission ( β n ) process. The experiment quantified neutron and γ -ray emission paths for each precursor. We used this information to test the hypothesis, first formulated by Bohr in 1939, that neutrons in the β n process originate from the structureless “compound nucleus.” The data are consistent with this postulate for most of the observed decay paths. The agreement, however, is surprising because the compound-nucleus stage should not be achieved in the studied β decay due to insufficient excitation energy and level densities in the neutron emitter. In the K 53 β n decay, we found a preferential population of the first excited state in Ca 52 that contradicted Bohr’s hypothesis. The latter was interpreted as evidence for direct neutron emission sensitive to the structure of the neutron-unbound state. We propose that the observed nonstatistical neutron emission proceeds through the coupling with nearby doorway states that have large neutron-emission probabilities. The appearance of “compound-nucleus” decay is caused by the aggregated small contributions of multiple doorway states at higher excitation energy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Decay spectroscopy at the two-proton drip line: Radioactivity of the new nuclides 160 Os and 156 W

The radioactivity of $^{160}_{76}$Os 84 and $^{156}_{74}$W 82 that lie at the two-proton drip line has been measured in an experiment performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The 160 Os nuclei were produced using fusion-evaporation reactions induced by a beam of 310 MeV 58 Ni ions bombarding a 106 Cd target. The 160 Os ions were separated in flight using the recoil separator MARA and implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector, which was used to measure their decays. The α decays of the ground state of 160 Os (Ε α = 7092(15) keV, t 1/2 = 97$^{+97}_{-32}$ μs) and its isomeric state (Ε α = 8890(10) keV, t 1/2 = 41$^{+15}_{-9}$ μs) were measured, allowing the excitation energy of the isomer to be determined as 1844(18) keV. These α-decay properties and the excitation energy of the isomer are compared with systematics. The α decays were correlated with subsequent decays to investigate the β decays of the ground state of 156 W, revealing that unlike its isotones, both low-lying isomers were populated in its daughter nuclide, 156 Ta. An improved value for the half-life of the proton-decaying high-spin isomeric state in $^{156}_{73}$Ta 83 of 333$^{+25}_{-22}$ ms was obtained in a separate experiment using the same experimental systems with a 102 Pd target. This result was employed to improve the precision of the half-life determined for 156 W, which was measured as 157$^{+57}_{-34}$ ms.

The spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the 2 1 + state of 12 C: A benchmark of theoretical models

The spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the first 2 + state of 12 C has been measured employing the Coulomb-excitation re-orientation technique. Our result of $Q_{s} (2^{+}_{1}) = +9.3^{+3.5}_{-3.8}$ efm 2 suggests a larger oblate deformation than previously reported. Combining this with the consistently re-analyzed adopted value, we present the most precise value to date of $Q_{s} (2^{+}_{1})$ = +9.5(18) efm 2 , which is consistent with a geometrical rotor description. This simple outcome is compared to state-of-the-art shell-model, mean-field, ab initio calculations, cluster-based and geometrical-like theories, which show varying degrees of emergent quadrupole collectivity.

Probing triaxiality beyond the proton drip line: Spectroscopy of Tm 147

Two triaxial states of the proton-decaying nucleus 147 Tm were studied via a comparison of experimental data to results obtained through nonadiabatic quasiparticle calculations. The experimental data were collected in a recoil-decay tagging study using the vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA coupled with the JUROGAM3 $\gamma$-ray spectrometer. The previously proposed level scheme above the triaxial 11/2 - (π⁢ℎ 11/2 ) ground state was confirmed, and the level structure was expanded to cover the states above the weakly populated proton-emitting 5/2 + (πd 5/2 ) isomeric state. Further, it was found that the isomeric state is also triaxial, and possibly more deformed than the ground state.

In-beam $$\gamma $$-ray spectroscopy of $$^{94}$$Ag

Abstract A recoil-beta-tagging experiment has been performed to study the excited $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 states in the odd–odd $$N=Z$$ N = Z nucleus $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag, populated via the $$^{40}$$ 40 Ca( $$^{58}$$ 58 Ni,1p3n) $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag reaction. The experiment was conducted using the MARA recoil separator and JUROGAM3 array at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. Through correlating fast, high-energy beta decays at the MARA focal plane with prompt $$\gamma $$ γ rays emitted at the reaction target, a number of transitions between excited states in $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag have been identified. The timing characteristics of these transitions confirm that they fall within decay sequences that feed the short-lived $$T=1$$ T = 1 ground state of $$^{94}$$ 94 Ag. The transitions are proposed to proceed within and between the sets of states with $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 . Possible correspondence between some of these transitions from analog states in $$^{94}$$ 94 Pd has been discussed, and shell-model calculations including multipole and monopole electromagnetic effects have been presented, in order to enable predictions of the decay patterns between the $$T=0$$ T = 0 and $$T=1$$ T = 1 states and to allow a theoretical set of Coulomb energy differences to be calculated for the $$A = 94$$ A = 94 $$T=1$$ T = 1 analog states.

New collective structures in Au 179 and their implications for the triaxial deformation of the Pt 178 core

The extremely neutron-deficient isotope 179 Au has been studied by a combination of in-beam γ-ray and isomeric-decay spectroscopy. For in-beam spectroscopy, the recoil-isomer tagging technique was employed, using the known 3/2 – , T 1/2 = 328 ns isomer. A new rotational band, associated with the unfavored signature band of the 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f⁢ 7/2 proton-intruder configuration, was revealed. A previously unknown, high-spin isomeric state with an excitation energy of 1743(17) keV and T 1/2 = 2.16⁢(8) ⁢µs was discovered. Five decay paths were identified, some of them feeding previously unknown non-yrast excited states, associated with the 1⁢i 13/2 proton-intruder configuration. Calculations based on the particle-plus-triaxial-rotor model were performed to interpret the data. On the basis of these calculations, the new 1⁢ℎ 9/2 ⊕2f 7/2 rotational band is interpreted as due to triaxial deformation of the underlying configuration with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 27°. In conclusion, observed non-yrast states of the positive-parity 1i 13/2 intruder configuration are interpreted as due to triaxial deformation with β 2 ≈ 0.26 and γ ≈ 20°.

Evidence against the wobbling nature of low-spin bands in 135 Pr

The electromagnetic character of the ΔI=1 transitions connecting the 1- to 0-phonon and the 2- to 1-phonon wobbling bands should be dominated by an E2 component, due to the collective motion of the entire nuclear charge. In the present work it is shown, based on combined angular correlation and linear polarization measurements, that the mixing ratios of all analyzed connecting transitions between low-lying bands in 135 Pr interpreted as 0-, 1-, and 2-phonon wobbling bands, have absolute values smaller than one. This indicates predominant M1 magnetic character, which is incompatible with the proposed wobbling nature. All experimental observables are instead in good agreement with quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations, which describe the bands as resulting from a rapid re-alignment of the total angular momentum from the short to the intermediate nuclear axis

First β-decay spectroscopy of 135 In and new β-decay branches of 134 In

The β decay of the neutron-rich 134 In and 135 In was investigated experimentally in order to provide new insights into the nuclear structure of the tin isotopes with magic proton number Z=50 above the N=82 shell. The β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three β-decay branches of 134 In were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via γ rays was identified in the two daughter nuclei of 134 In, 134 Sn and 133 Sn, at excitation energies exceeding the neutron separation energy by 1 MeV. The β-delayed one- and two-neutron emission branching ratios of 134 In were determined and compared with theoretical calculations. The β-delayed one-neutron decay was observed to be dominant β-decay branch of 134 In even though the Gamow-Teller resonance is located substantially above the two-neutron separation energy of 134 Sn. Transitions following the β decay of 135 In are reported for the first time, including γ rays tentatively attributed to 135 Sn. In total, six new levels were identified in 134 Sn on the basis of the βγγ coincidences observed in the 134 In and 135 Inβ decays. A transition that might be a candidate for deexciting the missing neutron single-particle 13/2 + state in 133 Sn was observed in both β decays and its assignment is discussed. Experimental level schemes of 134 Sn and 135 Sn are compared with shell-model predictions. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the 2 + , 4 + , and 6 + levels in 134 Sn were determined. From the lifetime of the 4 + state measured for the first time, an unexpectedly large B(E2;4 + → 2 + ) transition strength was deduced, which is not reproduced by the shell-model calculations.

Multiple chiral bands in $^{137}$Nd

Two new bands have been identified in 137 Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in 137 Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. Overall, the present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of odd-even and even-even nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segre chart.

Signatures of enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in 136 Nd

We report experimental signatures of moderately enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in 136 Nd are indicated for the first time. The extracted dipole moments of two negative-parity bands are only two times smaller than those of the lanthanide nuclei with $\textit{N}$ ≈ 90 which present well-established octupole correlations. Calculations using the cranked quasiparticle random phase approximation and a model of quadrupole-octupole rotations with octupole vibrations reveal the structure of the bands and the enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in 136 Nd .

In-beam γ-ray and electron spectroscopy of 249,251 Md

The odd-Z 251 Md nucleus was studied using combined γ-ray and conversion-electron in-beam spectroscopy. Besides the previously observed rotational band based on the [521]1/2 - configuration, another rotational structure has been identified using γ-γ coincidences. The use of electron spectroscopy allowed the rotational bands to be observed over a larger rotational frequency range. Using the transition intensities that depend on the gyromagnetic factor, a [514]7/2 - single-particle configuration has been inferred for this band, i.e., the ground-state band. A physical background that dominates the electron spectrum with an intensity of ≃60% was well reproduced by simulating a set of unresolved excited bands. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the intensity profile as a function of the angular momentum provided a method for deriving the orbital gyromagnetic factor, namely g K = $0.69$ $^{+0.19}_{-0.16}$ for the ground-state band. The odd-Z 249 Md was studied using γ-ray in-beam spectroscopy. Evidence for octupole correlations resulting from the mixing of the Δl = Δ j = 3 [521]3/2 - and [633]7/2 + Nilsson orbitals were found in both 249,251 Md. Here, a surprising similarity of the 251 Md ground-state band transition energies with those of the excited band of 255 Lr has been discussed in terms of identical bands. Lastly, Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations were performed to investigate the origin of the similarities between these bands.
