Defect-induced formation and frustration-driven multiple magnetic transitions in Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90

A new ternary compound, Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90 , has been synthesized in a chemically single phase by deliberately introducing lattice vacancies in the Co and Si sites. The system is characterized by DC magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Here, a detailed experimental study reveals that the system exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition below T N = 11.3 K followed by spin freezing behaviour below T B ~ 4.8 K. An additional high-temperature magnetic transition could also be detected at T H ~ 150 K, which is short range in character and is associated with defect-induced polarization of the conduction electrons. The spin-glass-like state formation in the system is additionally bolstered by the observation of magnetic relaxation and associated aging phenomena as well as the magnetic memory effect. On the basis of non-equilibrium dynamical behaviour, we argue that the glassy state in this compound favours the hierarchical model over the droplet model. DFT calculations and experimental outcomes establish that the ground state is magnetically frustrated due to the small energy difference between distinct spin configurations having closely spaced ground-state energies.

Coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetic dimers in topological insulators

The addition of magnetic impurities in topological insulators (TIs) can drive ferromagnetic order that leads to quantum anomalous Hall transport well below the Curie temperature. The fragility of the quantized regime has been ascribed to the random nature of the magnetic moment distribution. Here, we refine this hypothesis by using inelastic neutron scattering and density-functional theory calculations to show that two antagonistic components define the magnetism in Mn-substituted SnTe, thereby limiting the effectiveness of dilute magnetic TIs. One component is strongly bound antiferromagnetic dimers that compete with ferromagnetic order. In conclusion, the other component consists of undimerized moments where ferromagnetic order develops via long-range interactions.

Europium c -axis ferromagnetism in Eu ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 - y As 2 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Here we report neutron diffraction results for the body-centered-tetragonal series Eu⁢(Co 1-x ⁢Ni x ) 2-y As 2 , x=0.10, 0.20, 0.42, and 0.82, y≤0.10, that detail changes to the magnetic ordering with nominal hole doping. We report the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vectors, magnetic transition temperatures, and the ordered magnetic moments. We find a nonmonotonic change of the AFM propagation vector with x, with a minimum occurring at the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase crossover. For x=0.10 and 0.82 we find c-axis helix ordering of the Eu magnetic moments (spins) similar to x=0 and 1, with the spins oriented within the ab-plane. For x=0.20 and 0.42 we find higher-temperature c-axis ferromagnetic (FM) order and lower-temperature c-axis cone order. Using the extinction conditions for the space group, we discovered that the Eu spins are ordered in the higher-temperature c-axis FM phase for intermediate values of x, contrary to a previous report suggesting only Co/Ni spin ordering. Although we cannot directly confirm that the Co/Ni spins are also ordered, we suggest that c-axis itinerant-FM ordering of the Co/Ni spins could provide a molecular field that drives FM ordering of the Eu spins, which in turn provides the anisotropy for the lower-temperature c-axis cone order.

Large adiabatic temperature change and magnetic frustration in triangular lattice antiferromagnet Dy 2 IrSi 3

While previous studies reveal that the formation of polycrystalline R 2 TX 3 (R = rare-earth, T = transition metal, X = p-block element) type compounds with T = Ir and Co is not achievable without deliberate introduction of atomic vacancies of Ir/Co and Si, here we report successful synthesis of Dy 2 IrSi 3 with fully stoichiometric ratio of constituent elements. An antiferromagnetic transition is manifested in the compound at 6.6 K where only about 50 % of Dy spins take part, while the rest remain in highly frustrated state due to edge-sharing triangular lattice geometry. The magnetic frustration is conclusively probed through magnetization, heat capacity and magnetocaloric study and the frustration parameter (f = |θ p |/T N , θ p , T N being Curie-Weiss and Néel temperatures, respectively) in this case is as large as ~ 3. An additional cluster-glass type transition at ~2.8 K observed in this system has likely been originated due to this magnetic frustration. The magnetocaloric effect reveals an adiabatic temperature change of ~7.5 K for 70 kOe magnetic field, which is one of the largest values reported in intermetallic compounds.

Origin of magnetic ordering in half-Heusler RuMnGa

The half-Heusler alloy RuMnGa having valence electron count (VEC) 18 has recently been theoretically proposed to exhibit compensated ferrimagnetic (CFiM) character instead of the expected nonmagnetic ground state. On the other hand, a preliminary experimental study proposed ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. As no half-Heusler system with VEC 18 is known to exhibit magnetic ordering, we have investigated the details of crystal structure and magnetic properties of RuMnGa using a combination of experimental tools, viz., x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, dc and ac susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and neutron depolarisation measurements. Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron diffraction data suggest single phase nature of the compound with elemental composition RuMn 0.86 Ga 1.14 . We have shown that the system exhibits FM-type ordering owing to the inherent presence of this minor off-stoichiometry, showing very low magnetic moment. Further, the system also exhibits reentrant canonical spin-glass behavior, which is rarely observed in half-Heusler alloys. The temperature coefficient of resistivity changes its sign from negative to positive and further to negative as the temperature decreases.

4 d element induced improvement of structural disorder and development of weakly reentrant spin-glass behavior in NiRuMnSn

The pursuit of efficient spin polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula XX'YZ (where X, X', and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element) has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies showed that isoelectronic substitution of a 4d element in place of a 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloys improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research here, on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn, reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using x-ray absorption fine structure and neutron diffraction techniques which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni and Ru atoms at 4c and 4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our density functional theory calculations suggest a considerable decrease in spin polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare reentrant spin-glass property below ~ 60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

High spin polarization in the disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa

Here in this paper, we report the successful synthesis of a Fe-based highly spin-polarized quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa and its structural, magnetic, and transport properties probed through different experimental methods and theoretical techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on different types of structures reveal that the structure with Ga at 4a, V at 4b, Mn at 4c, and Fe at 4d (space group F$\bar{4}$3m) possess minimum energy among all the ordered variants. Ab initio simulations in the most stable ordered structure show that the compound is a ferromagnet having a large spin-polarization (89.9%). Neutron diffraction reveals that the compound crystallizes in disordered type-2 structure (space group Fm$\bar{3}$m) in which Ga occupies at 4a, V 4b and Fe/Mn occupy 4c/4d sites with 50:50 proportions. The structural disorder is further confirmed by x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry results, and DFT calculations. Magnetization studies suggest that the compound orders ferromagnetically below T C ~ 293 K and the saturation magnetization follows the Slater-Pauling rule. Mössbauer spectrometry, along with neutron diffraction, suggest that Mn is the major contributor to the total magnetism in the compound, consistent with the theoretical calculations, which also indicates that spin polarization remains high (81.3%), even in the presence of such large atomic disorder. The robustness of the half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) property in the presence of disorder is a quite unique characteristic over other reported HMF in literature and makes this compound quite promising for spintronics applications.

Experimental observation of spin glass state in the highly disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeRuMnGa

The realization of the spin-glass (SG) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half- and full-Heusler alloys are known to exhibit the SG state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of a SG state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa where the SG state is in between the canonical SG and the cluster glass. Different intricate features of the SG state including nonequilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperatures in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity, and neutron-diffraction studies. Further the structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional A2 - nor B2 -type whereas those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semimetallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperatures.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic structure of trigonal EuAl 2 Ge 2 single crystals

Understanding the interplay between magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom is of profound recent interest in different Eu-based magnetic topological materials. Here, we studied the magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Zintl-phase compound EuAl 2 Ge 2 crystallizing in the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structure. We report zero-field neutron diffraction, temperature T - and magnetic-field H-dependent magnetic susceptibility χ(T, H), isothermal magnetization M(T, H), heat capacity C p (T, H), and electrical resistivity ρ(T, H) measurements, together with T-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements complemented with first-principle calculations. EuAl 2 Ge 2 undergoes second-order A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below T N = 27.5(5) K, with the Eu moments (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane while these layers are stacked antiferromagnetically along the c axis. The critical fields at which all moments become parallel to the field are 37.5(5) and 52.5(5) kOe for H ∥ ab and H ∥ c, respectively. The H = 0 magnetic structure consists of trigonal AFM domains associated with ab-plane magnetic anisotropy and a field-induced reorientation of the Eu spins in the domains is also evident at T = 2 K below the critical field H c1 = 2.5(1) kOe. The ρ(T) measurements reveal metallic behavior transforming into a slight resistivity increase on cooling towards T N . A pronounced loss of spin-disorder scattering is observed below T N . The ARPES results show that EuAl 2 Ge 2 is metallic both above and below T N , and the Fermi surface is anisotropic with two hole pockets at the zone center and one small electron pocket at each M point. In the AFM phase, we directly observe folded bands in ARPES due to the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis with an enhancement of quasiparticle weight due to the complex change in the coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant electrons on cooling below T N . The observed electronic structure is well reproduced by first-principle calculations, which also predict the presence of nontrivial electronic states near the Fermi level in the AFM phase with Z 2 topological numbers 1;(000)

Magnetic frustration driven by conduction carrier blocking in Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88

The intermetallic compound Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88 having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition $T_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at $T_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd–4$\textit{f}$ and Co–3$\textit{d}$ moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed studies of temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, field dependence of isothermal magnetization, nonequilibrium dynamical behavior, viz., magnetic relaxation, aging effect, magnetic-memory effect, and temperature dependence of heat capacity, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggest that the ground state is magnetically frustrated spin glass in nature, having competing magnetic interactions of equivalent energies. DFT results further reveal that the 3$\textit{d}$/5$\textit{d}$-conduction carriers are blocked in the system and act as a barrier for the 4$\textit{f}$–4$\textit{f}$ RKKY interactions, resulting in spin frustration. Presence of vacancy defects in the crystal are also conducive to the spin frustration. This is an unique mechanism of magnetic frustration, not emphasized so far in any of the ternary $R_2TX_3$ ($\textit{R}$ = rare earth, $\textit{T}$ = transition elements, and $\textit{X}$ = Si, Ge, In) type compounds. Due to the competing character of the itinerant 3$\textit{d}$ and localized 4$\textit{f}$ moments, the compound exhibits anomalous field dependence of magnetic coercivity. Further, the system also exhibits a considerable magnetic entropy change of –Δ$S_M$ ~ 13.3 J/kg K with a relative cooling power (RCP) of 220 J/kg and adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\text{ad}}$ of 6 K for magnetic field change of 70 kOe.

Frustrated magnetic cycloidal structure and emergent Potts nematicity in CaMn 2 P 2

We report neutron-diffraction results on single-crystal CaMn 2 P 2 containing corrugated Mn honeycomb layers, and we determine its ground-state magnetic structure. The diffraction patterns consist of prominent (1/6,1/6, L ) reciprocal-lattice unit (r.l.u.; L = integer) magnetic Bragg reflections, whose temperature-dependent intensities are consistent with a first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature T N = 70 (1) K. Our analysis of the diffraction patterns reveals an in-plane 6 × 6 magnetic unit cell with ordered spins that in the principal-axis directions rotate by 60°steps between nearest neighbors on each sublattice that forms the honeycomb structure, consistent with the P A c magnetic space group. We find that a few other magnetic subgroup symmetries (P A 2 /c, P C 2/m, P S 1, P C 2, P C m, P S 1) of the paramagnetic $P\bar{3}m11'$ crystal symmetry are consistent with the observed diffraction pattern. We relate our findings to frustrated J 1 -J 2 -J 3 Heisenberg honeycomb antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy and the emergence of Potts nematicity.

Low-field magnetic anomalies in single crystals of the A-type square-lattice antiferromagnet EuGa 4

The body-centered-tetragonal antiferromagnet EuGa 4 was recently identified as a Weyl nodal-line semimetal that exhibits the topological Hall effect below its reported antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature T N = 15 – 16.5 K which we find to be T N = 16.4 ( 2 ) K. The Eu +2 ions are located at the corners and body centers of the unit cells. EuGa 4 exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic order below T N , where the Eu 2+ spin-7/2 moments are ferromagnetically aligned in the ab plane with the Eu moments in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis aligned antiferromagnetically. Low-field magnetization versus field M(H ab ) data at T = 2 K with the field aligned in the ab plane are reported that exhibit anomalous positive curvature up to a critical field H c1 at which a second-order transition occurs with H c1 ≈ 0.85 kOe for H∥ [1,1,0] and ≈ 4.8 kOe for H∥[1,0,0]. For larger fields, the linear behavior M ab = χ(T N ) H a b is followed until the critical field H c is reached at which all moments become aligned with the applied field. A theory is formulated for T = 0 K that fits the observed M(H ab ) behavior at T = 2 K well, where domains of A -type AFM order with fourfold rotational symmetry occur in the AFM state in zero field. The moments in the four domains reorient to become almost perpendicular to H ab at H c1 , followed by increasing canting of all moments toward the field with increasing field up to H c which is reported to be 71 kOe. A first-order transition in M(H ab ) at H ab = H c1 is predicted by the theory for T = 0 K when H ab is at a small angle from the [1,0,0] direction.

Ground-state degeneracy and complex magnetism of geometrically frustrated Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97

We report a new triangular-lattice intermetallic compound Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97 was successfully synthesized as single phase by deliberately introducing vacancies. Theoretical analysis suggests that the ground state is competing with several low-energy spin configurations due to magnetic frustration on a nearly ideal triangular lattice. Despite a number of competing magnetic states, the compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order at16K, a long-range ferrimagnetic transition at 6.5 K, and a reentrant cluster-glass transition below T f ~ 3K. The complex magnetism in the compound could be correlated with competing antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic structures predicted theoretically.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal SmMg 2 Bi 2

Dirac semimetals show nontrivial physical properties and can host exotic quantum states like Weyl semimetals and topological insulators under suitable external conditions. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements (ARPES) and first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that the Zintl-phase compound SmMg 2 Bi 2 is in close proximity to a topological Dirac semimetallic state. ARPES results show a Dirac-like band crossing at the zone center near the Fermi level (E F ), which is further confirmed by first-principle calculations. Theoretical studies also reveal that SmMg 2 Bi 2 belongs to a Z 2 topological class and hosts spin-polarized states around the E F . Zintl's theory predicts that the valence state of Sm in this material should be Sm 2+ , however, we detect many Sm-4f multiplet states (flat-bands) whose energy positions and relative intensities suggest the presence of both dominant Sm 2+ and minor Sm 3+ . The small concentration (2.5%) of Sm 3+ in the bulk of a crystal is inferred to arise from Sm vacancies in the crystal. It is also evident that these flat bands and other dispersive states are strongly hybridized when they cross each other. Due to the presence of Sm 3+ ions, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility χ (T) shows a Curie-Weiss-like contribution in the low-temperature region, in addition to the Van Vleck-like behavior expected for the Sm 2+ ions. The present study will help to better understand the electronic structure, magnetism, and transport properties of related materials.

Magnetic field induced a b -plane rotation of the Eu magnetic moments in trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 and EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals below their Néel temperatures

The thermodynamic and electronic-transport properties of trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 in ab-plane magnetic fields H x and the A-type antiferromagnetic structure have recently been reported. The Eu magnetic moments with spin S = 7/2 remain locked in the ab plane up to and above the ab-plane critical field $H^{c}_{x}$ = 27.5 kOe at which the Eu moments become parallel to H x . Here additional measurements at low fields are reported that reveal a new spin-reorientation transition at a field H c1 ≈ 465 Oe where the Eu moments remain in the ab plane but become perpendicular to H x . At higher fields, the moments cant toward the field resulting in M ∝ H x up to $H^{c}_{x}$. Similar results are reported from measurements of the magnetic properties of EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals, where H c1 ≈ 220 Oe is found. Theory is formulated that models the low-field magnetic behavior of both materials, and the associated anisotropies are calculated. Further, the ab-plane trigonal anisotropy in EuMg 2 Sb 2 is found to be significantly smaller than in EuMg 2 Bi 2 .

Coexisting structural disorder and robust spin-polarization in half-metallic FeMnVAl

We report half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs) are one of the most promising materials in the field of spintronics due to their unique band structure, consisting of one spin subband having metallic characteristics along with another subband with semiconductor-like behavior. In this work, we report the synthesis of a novel quaternary Heusler alloy—FeMnVAl—and we have studied the structural, magnetic, transport, and electronic properties complemented with first-principles calculations. Among different possible structurally ordered arrangements, the optimal structure is identified by theoretical energy minimization. The corresponding spin-polarized band-structure calculations indicate the presence of a half-metallic ferromagnetic ground state. A detailed and careful investigation of the x-ray diffraction data, Mössbauer spectra, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra suggests the presence of site disorder between the Fe and Mn atoms in the stable ordered structure of the system. The magnetic susceptibility measurement clearly establishes a ferromagnetic-like transition below ~213 K. The Fe Mössbauer spectrometry measurements suggest that only the Mn spins could be responsible for the magnetic order, which is consistent with our theoretical calculation. Surprisingly, the density-functional-theory calculations reveal that the spin-polarization value is almost immunized (92.4% → 90.4%) from the Mn-Fe structural disorder, even when nonmagnetic Fe and moment-carrying Mn sites are entangled inseparably. The robustness of spin polarization and half-metallicity in the studied FeMnVAl compound comprising structural disorder is thus quite interesting and could provide a new direction to investigate and understand the exact role of disorders on spin polarization in this class of materials, beyond the available knowledge.

Magnetocaloric response with significant mechanical efficiency in frustrated intermetallic compound $\mathrm{Pr_{2}Co_{0.86}Si_{2.88}}$

We report magnetically frustrated materials are considered as a promising unconventional members of caloric materials. Here, the magnetocaloric properties of the frustrated Pr 2 Co 0.86 Si 2.88 have been investigated and discussed with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The material exhibits a magnetic entropy change (-ΔS M ) of 13.1 J/kg-K for ΔH = 70 kOe around low-temperature transition T L ~ 4 K associated with the antiferromagnetic coupling between localized Pr-4f and itinerant Co-3d moments. Despite the absence of any long-range magnetic order, the obtained - ΔS M is one of the highest among the known Pr-based good magnetocaloric materials at cryogenic temperature range. It also exhibits a relative cooling power (RCP) of ~ 201 J/kg and an adiabatic temperature change of 6.3 K around T L at 70 kOe. Moreover, the compound also exhibits a high mechanical efficiency and moderate electrical efficiency, being beneficial for possible technological applications.
