Responsive‐Hydrogel Aquabots

Abstract It remains a challenge to produce soft robots that can mimic the responsive adaptability of living organisms. Rather than fabricating soft robots from bulk hydrogels, hydrogels are integrated into the interfacial assembly of aqueous two‐phase systems to generate ultra‐soft and elastic all‐aqueous aquabots that exhibit responsive adaptability, that can shrink on demand and have electrically conductive functions. The adaptive functions of the aquabots provide a new platform to develop minimally invasive surgical devices, targeted drug delivery systems, and flexible electronic sensors and actuators.

Defining blood hematology reference values in female pig-tailed macaques ( Macaca nemestrina ) using the Isolation Forest algorithm

Background: Pig-tailed macaques (PTMs) are commonly used as preclinical models to assess antiretroviral drugs for HIV prevention research. Drug toxicities and disease pathologies are often preceded by changes in blood hematology. To better assess the safety profile of pharmaceuticals, we defined normal ranges of hematological values in PTMs using an Isolation Forest (iForest) algorithm. Methods: Eighteen female PTMs were evaluated. Blood was collected 1–24 times per animal for a total of 159 samples. Complete blood counts were performed, and iForest was used to analyze the hematology data to detect outliers. Results: Median, IQR, and ranges were calculated for 13 hematology parameters. From all samples, 22 outliers were detected. These outliers were excluded from the reference index. Conclusions: Using iForest, we defined a normal range for hematology parameters in female PTMs. This reference index can be a valuable tool for future studies evaluating drug toxicities in PTMs.

Novel mutant P277 peptide VP to ameliorate atherogenic side-effects and to preserve anti-diabetic effects in NOD mice

Highlights: • VP deleted B epitope and reduced atherosclerosis. • VP maintained anti-T1DM function. • VP maintained β cell function and anti-inflammatory. P277 is a 24 amino-acids peptide, residues 437–460 of human heat shock protein 60 (HSP60). P277 or sequence repeated 6 × P277 was previously found showing potency preventive and therapeutic anti-diabetes functions in NOD mice, but aroused atherosclerosis due to the induction of anti-HSP65 autoantibodies as reported. To determine the intrinsic B epitope sequence, we screened P277 with pepscan method and then proved by detection of sera IgG from peptide fragments vaccinated mouse and rabbits. Results indicated HSP60 443–448 (ALLRCI) is potential intrinsic B epitope sequence of P277. We modified P277 by deleting the former three amino acids of ALLRCI (VP) or replacing these six with alanine (AP). The detection of serum lipid parameter in NOD mice and aorta endothelial damage levels in high-cholesterol diets fed rabbits demonstrated that VP induced higher anti-diabetes efficacy and caused less arteriosclerosis-liked diseases separately. With less TLR2/4 activation of dendritic cells and macrophages, VP treatment reduced Th1 related P277 specific pro-inflammatory cytokines production and increased regulatory immune responses both in vivo and in vitro. These results indicated that optimized VP peptide might serve as a promising candidate for mouse type 1 diabetes therapy.

Friction Stir Welding of Dissimilar Al/Al and Al/Non-Al Alloys: A Review

Friction stir welding is a solid-state welding technique that has many advantages over traditional fusion welding, and has been widely adopted in the aerospace and automotive industries. This article reviews research developments in friction stir welding of dissimilar alloys systems, including combinations of aluminum alloys with Mg alloys, Cu, and steel. Microstructural evolution, hardness, tensile and fatigue properties, residual stresses, and corrosion behavior of dissimilar welds will be reported. The effects of processing parameters such as tool rotation and traverse speeds, tool position, material position, and tool geometry on the weld quality are also presented. Discussions on future research directions in friction stir welding will also be provided in the context of existing literature and future high-integrity applications.

Accurate Waveforms for Non-spinning Binary Black Holes using the Effective-one-body Approach

Using numerical relativity as guidance and the natural flexibility of the effective-one-body (EOB) model, we extend the latter so that it can successfully match the numerical relativity waveforms of non-spinning binary black holes during the last stages of inspiral, merger and ringdown. Here, by successfully, we mean with phase differences < or approx. 8% of a gravitational-wave cycle accumulated until the end of the ringdown phase. We obtain this result by simply adding a 4 post-Newtonian order correction in the EOB radial potential and determining the (constant) coefficient by imposing high-matching performances with numerical waveforms of mass ratios m1/m2 = 1,2/3,1/2 and = 1/4, m1 and m2 being the individual black-hole masses. The final black-hole mass and spin predicted by the numerical simulations are used to determine the ringdown frequency and decay time of three quasi-normal-mode damped sinusoids that are attached to the EOB inspiral-(plunge) waveform at the light-ring. The accurate EOB waveforms may be employed for coherent searches of gravitational waves emitted by non-spinning coalescing binary black holes with ground-based laser-interferometer detectors.
