Environmental loading effects on structures

The environment in which a structure vibrates influences its modal characteristics. Presented herein is experimental modal survey test results on splitter vanes under liquid nitrogen mass-pressure-thermal loading. In particular, shifts in modal frequencies are studied via frequency response functions, power spectral densities, isoplots, quadrature or imaginary plots, and vibration mode shape characteristics generated from strain and acceleration measurements. Analyses have shown that while mass loading lowers the frequencies, increased pressure and lower temperature have opposite effect. Thus, pressurization and cooling of a liquid causes the modal frequencies of the structure in which it is contained to shift upward.

Identification and characterization of structural nonlinearities in the Space Shuttle Main Engine

Structural nonlinearities should be considered in the analysis and modeling of mechanical systems for accuracy in predicting dynamic behavior. Moreover, checks for nonlinearity should address the type and class of nonlinearity in the structure and identify the probable cause. A series of experimental modal survey tests were carried out to determine and characterize the structural nonlinearities of the Space Shuttle Main Engine main injector. Different excitation regimes at various amplitudes were utilized to induce vibration and strain, and acceleration measurements were taken at judiciously selected locations. The test results indicated that both stiffness and damping nonlinearities were present.

Fluid mass and thermal loading effects on the modal characteristics of space shuttle main engine liquid oxygen inlet splitter vanes

An analysis and evaluation of experimental modal survey test data on the variations of modal characteristics induced by pressure and thermal loading events are presented. Extensive modal survey tests were carried out on a Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) test article using liquid nitrogen under cryogenic temperatures and high pressures. The results suggest that an increase of pressure under constant cryogenic temperature or a decrease of temperature under high pressure induces an upward shift of frequencies of various modes of the structures.

Modal survey tests for high-frequency vibration analysis of the Space Shuttle Main Engine

Variations in the modal characteristics of different Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) are presented herein to study their structural dynamics vibrations, especially under fluid/structure interaction. The results of extensive modal survey tests and analysis relative to significant features in the modal characteristics of different powerheads and components are discussed.
