Direct Observation and Analysis of Low-Energy Magnons with Raman Spectroscopy in Atomically Thin NiPS 3

van der Waals (vdW) magnets have rapidly emerged as a fertile playground for fundamental physics and exciting applications. Despite the impressive developments over the past few years, technical limitations pose a severe challenge to many other potential breakthroughs. High on the list is the lack of suitable experimental tools for studying spin dynamics on atomically thin samples. Here, Raman scattering techniques are employed to directly observe the low-lying magnon (~1 meV) even in bilayer NiPS 3 . Further, the advantage is that it offers excellent energy resolutions far better on low-energy sides than most inelastic neutron spectrometers can offer. More importantly, with appropriate theoretical analysis, the polarization dependence of the Raman scattering by those low-lying magnons also provides otherwise hidden information on the dominant spin-exchange scattering paths for different magnons. By comparing with high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering data, these low-energy Raman modes are confirmed to be indeed of magnon origin. Because of the different scattering mechanisms involved in inelastic neutron and Raman scattering, this information is fundamental in pinning down the final spin Hamiltonian. This work demonstrates the capability of Raman spectroscopy to probe the genuine two-dimensional spin dynamics in atomically thin vdW magnets, which can provide insights that are obscured in bulk spin dynamics.

Composition dependence of bulk properties in the Co-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide $\mathrm{Co_{1/3}TaS_2}$

Spontaneous Hall conductivity has recently been reported in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2 under a zero magnetic field. This phenomenon originates from the distinctive noncoplanar triple-Q magnetic ground state, possessing uniform real-space Berry curvature characterized by scalar spin chirality. We investigated the physical properties of Co 1/3 TaS 2 by judiciously controlling the composition, revealing a drastic change in its bulk properties, even by slight variations in cobalt composition, despite the same crystal structure. For 0.299≤x≤0.325, Co x TaS 2 keeps all the characteristics of the ground state consistent with the previous studies—two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T N1 and T N2 ( N1 ), a large spontaneous Hall conductivity [σ xy (H=0)], and a weak ferromagnetic moment along the c axis. However, samples with x≥0.330 exhibit distinct bulk properties, including the absence of both σ xy (H=0) and the weak ferromagnetic moment. Our neutron diffraction data reveal that Co x TaS 2 with x≥0.330 develops coplanar helical magnetic order with q m1 =(1/3, 0, 0). This is entirely different from what has been seen in x≤0.325, explaining the observed composition dependence.

Quantum magnetism in the frustrated square lattice oxyhalides YbBi 2 IO 4 and YbBi 2 ClO 4

Square-lattice systems offer a direct route for realizing two-dimensional (2D) quantum magnetism with frustration induced by competing interactions. In this work, the square lattice materials YbBi 2 IO 4 and YbBi 2 ClO 4 were investigated using a combination of magnetization and specific-heat measurements on polycrystalline samples. Specific-heat measurements provide evidence for long-range magnetic order below $T$ N = 0.21 K (0.25 K) for YbBi 2 IO 4 (YbBi 2 ClO 4 ). On the other hand, a rather broad maximum is found in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, located at $T$ max = 0.33 K (0.38 K) in YbBi 2 IO 4 (YbBi 2 ClO 4 ), consistent with the quasi-2D magnetism expected for the large separation between the magnetic layers. Estimation of the magnetic entropy supports the expected Kramers' doublet ground state for Yb 3+ and the observed paramagnetic behavior is consistent with a well-isolated doublet. Roughly two-thirds of the entropy is consumed above $T$ N , due to a combination of the quasi-2D behavior and magnetic frustration. The impact of frustration is examined from the viewpoint of a simplified $J$ 1 -$J$ 2 square lattice model, which is frustrated for antiferromagnetic interactions. Specifically, a high-temperature series expansion analysis of the temperature-dependent specific-heat and magnetization data yields $J$ 2 /$J$ 1 = 0.30 (=0.23) for YbBi 2 IO 4 (YbBi 2 ClO 4 ). In conclusion, this simplified analysis suggests strong frustration that should promote significant quantum fluctuations in these compounds, and thus motivates future work on the static and dynamic magnetic properties of these materials.

Tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering and large spontaneous Hall conductivity in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2

The triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) has been the standard paradigm of frustrated magnetism for several decades. The most common magnetic ordering in insulating TLAFs is the 120° structure. However, a new triple-Q chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co 1 / 3 TaS 2 as the first example of tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero σ xy (H = 0)). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-Q state.

Spin wave Hamiltonian and anomalous scattering in NiPS 3

Here, we report a comprehensive spin wave analysis of the semiconducting honeycomb van der Waal antiferromagnet NiPS 3 . Using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, we map out the full Brillouin zone and fit the observed modes to a spin wave model with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find that the third-nearest-neighbor exchange J 3 dominates the Hamiltonian, a feature which we fully account for by ab initio density functional theory calculations. We also quantify the degree to which the threefold rotation symmetry is broken and account for the Q = 0 excitations observed in other measurements, yielding a spin exchange model which is consistent across multiple experimental probes. We also identify a strongly reduced static ordered moment and reduced low-energy intensity relative to the linear spin wave calculations, signaling unexplained features in the magnetism which requires going beyond the linear spin wave approximation.

Bond-dependent anisotropy and magnon decay in cobalt-based Kitaev triangular antiferromagnet

Following tremendous success of the graphene-derived fundamental and applied research, the magnetic van der Waals materials that can be cleaved into monolayer two-dimensional atomic crystals have emerged as a new platform in the studies of low-dimensional physics and in the design of artificial heterostructures with novel properties. Because of that, the family of dihalides and trihalides of the 3d transition group receive a strong renewed interest. Together with our experimental collaborators, we have investigated the novel dynamical properties of one of such promising material CoI 2 , and demonstrated that spin excitations in it are prone to substantial breakdown and complex level repulsion, the important quantum effects whose theoretical understanding has been significantly advanced by our group in the last two decades. Both phenomena are dramatically revealed by experiments and verified by the theory in our joint study, published in Nature Physics. Altogether, our results pave the way toward a new research direction for the magnetic van der Waals materials.

Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h -Y(Mn,Al)O 3

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO 3 , a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO 3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.
