Atomic-Scale Modulation of Synthetic Magnetic Order in Oxide Superlattices

We report atomic-scale precision control of magnetic interactions facilitates a synthetic spin order useful for spintronics, including advanced memory and quantum logic devices. Conventional modulation of synthetic spin order has been limited to metallic heterostructures that exploit Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction through a nonmagnetic metallic spacer; however, they face issues arising from Joule heating and/or electric breakdown. The practical realization and observation of a synthetic spin order across a nonmagnetic insulating spacer will lead to the development of spin-related devices with a completely different concept. Herein, the atomic-scale modulation of the synthetic spiral spin order in oxide superlattices composed of ferromagnetic metal and nonmagnetic insulator layers is reported. The atomically controlled superlattice exhibits an oscillatory magnetic behavior, representing the existence of a spiral spin structure. Depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry evidences modulated spiral spin structures as a function of the nonmagnetic insulator layer thickness. Atomic-scale customization of the spin state can move the field one step further to actual spintronic applications.

Tunable Ferromagnetism in LaCoO 3 Epitaxial Thin Films

We report ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO 3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO 3 thin films are highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO 3 thin films lie in a narrow range of 80–85 K, without much deviation. In this study, substantial enhancement (≈18%) in the Curie temperature of epitaxial LaCoO 3 thin films is demonstrated via crystallographic orientation dependence. By changing the crystallographic orientation of the films from (111) to (110), the crystal-field energy is reduced and the charge transfer between the Co and O orbitals is enhanced. These modifications lead to a considerable enhancement of the ferromagnetic properties (including the Curie temperature and magnetization), despite the identical nominal degree of epitaxial strain. The findings of this study provide insights into facile tunability of ferromagnetic properties via structural symmetry control in LaCoO 3 .

Thermal transport properties and some hydrodynamic-like behavior in three-dimensional topological semimetal $\mathrm{ZrTe}_5$

We report hydrodynamic fluidity in condensed matter physics has been experimentally demonstrated only in a limited number of compounds due to the stringent conditions that must be met. Herein, we performed thermal and electrical transport experiments in three-dimensional topological semimetal ZrTe 5 . By measuring the thermal properties in a wide temperature range, two representative experimental evidences of the hydrodynamics are observed in temperature window between the ballistic and diffusive regimes: a faster evolution of the thermal conductivity than in the ballistic regime and the non-monotonic temperature-dependent effective quasiparticle mean-free-path. In addition, magneto-thermal conductivity results indicate that charged quasiparticles, as well as phonons, may also play an important role in this hydrodynamic-like flow in ZrTe 5 .

Unconventional interlayer exchange coupling via chiral phonons in synthetic magnetic oxide heterostructures

Chiral symmetry breaking of phonons plays an essential role in emergent quantum phenomena owing to its strong coupling to spin degree of freedom. However, direct experimental evidence of the chiral phonon–spin coupling is lacking. In this study, we report a chiral phonon–mediated interlayer exchange interaction in atomically controlled ferromagnetic metal (SrRuO 3 )-nonmagnetic insulator (SrTiO 3 ) heterostructures. Owing to the unconventional interlayer exchange interaction, we have observed rotation of spins as a function of nonmagnetic insulating spacer thickness, resulting in a spin spiral state. The chiral phonon–spin coupling is further confirmed by phonon Zeeman effect. The existence of the chiral phonons and their interplay with spins along with our atomic-scale heterostructure approach unveil the crucial roles of chiral phonons in magnetic materials.

Epitaxial Stabilization of Metastable 3C BaRuO 3 Thin Film with Ferromagnetic Non-Fermi Liquid Phase

Thin films of perovskite ruthenates of the general formula ARuO 3 (A = Ca and Sr) are versatile electrical conductors for viable oxide electronics. They are also scientifically intriguing, as they exhibit nontrivial electromagnetic ground states depending on the A-site element. Among them, realization of the cubic perovskite (3C) BaRuO 3 in thin film form has been a challenge so far, because the 3C phase is metastable with the largest formation energy among the various polymorph phases of BaRuO 3 . In this study, 3C BaRuO 3 thin films are successfully prepared employing epitaxial stabilization. Here the 3C BaRuO 3 thin films show itinerant ferromagnetism with a transition temperature of ≈48 K and a non-Fermi liquid phase. The epitaxial stabilization of the 3C BaRuO 3 further enables to make a standard comparison of perovskite ruthenates, thereby establishing the importance of the Ru-O orbital hybridization in understanding the itinerant magnetic system.

Enhancing the local conductivity of Cu films using temperature-assisted agglomerated Cu nanostructures

We investigate the structural and electrical properties of Cu film and reveal their changes as a function of post-annealing temperature. Thermal annealing of a Cu film on a dielectric substrate can improve its crystallinity; however, high-temperature annealing also leads to a morphological transformation that hinders the precise measurement of electrical properties. The enhanced crystallinity of the Cu films is verified with x-ray diffraction as the annealing temperature increases. To examine the electrical properties of the Cu film after the dewetting processes, which promotes the formation of voids and agglomerations, we utilize both conventional micro four-point probe method as well as an advanced four-point probe scanning tunneling microscopy (4P-STM) technique to measure the conductance and evolution of the microscopic structural properties. We could eliminate a deceptive effect of voids with 4P-STM technique, and disclosed a significantly reduced resistivity (1.88 ± 0.07 µΩ∙cm) of Cu nanostructure after post-annealing at 700 °C. We unveiled impact of crystallinity and imperfections of Cu nanostructure, and discussed the critical role of the twin grain boundaries of single-crystalline Cu (1 1 1) on an Al 2 O 3 substrate. We anticipate that understanding the evolution of the structures and the enhanced electrical properties of the post-annealed Cu nanostructures would be important for nanoscale devices where Cu is used as an interconnecting material and could provide a new route to control the plasmonic applications.
