Corrosion of 316H Stainless Steel in Flowing FLiBe (LiF-BeF 2 )

This milestone was originally envisioned for completion in FY21 and was delayed due to the COVID-19 response and difficulties in fabricating/obtaining fluoride salts. A monometallic type 316H stainless steel thermal convection loop (TCL) was operated for 1000 h with flowing LiFBeF 2 (i.e. FLiBe) salt and a peak temperature of 650°C. In general, the attack was minimal. However, classic mass transfer was not clearly observed with mass losses in both the hot and cold legs. There was an issue with cleaning the loop with water and specimens may have oxidized, which was not an issue with the previous FLiNaK TCL.

Hydrothermal corrosion and steam oxidation behavior comparison of UAM and conventional Zry-4

Here, hydrothermal corrosion and steam exposures on ultrasonic additively manufactured (UAM) Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) specimens were conducted to compare to wrought Zry-4 performance in both simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) operation (330°C, 15 MPa, <50 ppb oxygen, 500h) and representative accident conditions (100% H 2 O(g) at 700, 900, and 1100°C for up to 1h). UAM Zry-4 specimens showed 50% higher mass gain in PWR conditions and 50-80% more mass gain in steam oxidation due to internal oxidation between build layers in both cases. UAM Zry-4 in 900°C steam showed breakaway oxidation leading to sample deformation. Titanium used as an interlayer in the UAM process was detected in the substrate after the 1100°C exposure. Additional experiments to better link as-built defects to oxidation behavior are needed.

Accelerated oxidation during 1350°C cycling of ytterbium silicate environmental barrier coatings

We report environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) will be needed to protect SiC-based ceramic matrix composite components for the next generation of high-efficiency industrial gas turbines (IGTs). The IGT application will require ≥25 kh lifetimes, and little data are available on EBC failure mechanisms, particularly at ≥1300°C. Initial 1-h furnace cycle testing at 1350°C in 90 vol% H 2 O/10 vol% air was conducted ≥1000 cycles on thermally sprayed ytterbium disilicate (YbDS) coatings with and without an Si bond coating. By ≥1000 h, both EBCs formed thick, highly cracked, and fully crystalline cristobalite scales. Comparison of thermally grown oxide (TGO) microstructure and kinetics to isothermal rates of Si and SiC steam oxidation indicated a departure from slow-growing parabolic growth to more rapid rates of silica formation. Possible mechanisms and implications for this acceleration are discussed.

Oxidation Behavior Comparison of UAM and Conventional Zry-4

Initial hydrothermal corrosion and steam exposures have been completed on ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) Zry4 specimens to compare to wrought Zry4 performance in both normal operation and accident conditions. Slightly higher mass gains were found for the UAM Zry4 specimens in both conditions, but these were generally associated with internal oxidation where delamination of build layers occurred in the UAM material. Further characterization is being completed to conclude this first phase of testing while a second phase is being planned.

FLiBe Capsule Testing of 316H

This milestone was originally envisioned for completion in FY20 and was delayed due to the COVID-19 response and lack of FLiBe salt. In March 2021, FLiBe salt was received from Kairos Power. The nine capsule experiments with type 316H stainless steel specimens and 316 capsules were completed at 550° and 650°C for 1000 h to bracket the conditions expected in the subsequent thermal convection loop (TCL) experiment. In three capsules, Be metal was added for redox control. The specimen mass losses were low, similar to those observed previously for FLiNaK salt and the addition of Be reduced the average mass loss. Initial characterization suggested that some reaction with Be may have occurred. Therefore, Be was not included in the TCL experiment.
