Ramifications of X-Site Ion Modification in a Zero-Dimensional Piezoelectric Tetrahalozincate

Using mixtures of A, B, or X site ions in piezoelectric hybrid organic inorganic materials has been shown to be an effective strategy to improve piezoelectric properties. Here, we investigated the effect of increasing Br content within histammonium tetrachlorozincate [HistNH3Zn(Cl x Br 1–x )4] by varying the relative amounts of Cl and Br from x = 0% to 100% on nonlinear optical and piezoelectric properties. We found that the crystal structures were unchanged with Br percentages up to 100%, but the melting point of the materials changed substantially with increasing Br content. On the other hand, the nonlinear optical properties were only moderately affected with increasing Br content. The piezoelectric response of each material was measured and compared with DFT calculated values, both of which agreed that the overall the materials had relatively similar d 33 coefficients. The x = 75% Br compound had the largest magnitude d 33 value at maximum strain at both 29 °C (−97.56 pm/V) and 40 °C (−92.00 pm/V). The observed negative piezoelectric response is a rare trait that was ascribed to the large number of intermolecular interactions between lattice elements, as described by others.

Nanoribbons or weakly connected acenes? The influence of pyrene insertion on linearly extended ring systems

Derived from the lateral fusion of benzene rings, acenes are a class of π-conjugated molecules containing a single aromatic sextet, where system size is inversely correlated with chemical stability. In the pursuit of creating graphene nanoribbons/nanowires, several extended-ring structures have been synthesized through linear combinations of azaacenes and pyrene. Importantly, these extended systems demonstrate enhanced chemical stability and allow for the construction of macromolecular-sized structures. In this report we present a combined quantum-chemical and experimental study to reveal the cost of these improved characteristics in fully carbon-based systems. The results clearly show that pyrene moieties inserted among acene units do not result in long acene-like structures, rather the pyrene-inserted acene is, electronically, a series of (nearly) isolated acenes. The origin of pyrene's electronic blocking effect and implications on oxidized and photoexcited states of these extended-ring systems are detailed. The results of this investigation definitively show that coupling pyrene in an orthogonal orientation (through the 4, 5/9, 10 positions or e/l faces) to acenes should be eschewed if nanographene-/nanowire-like structures are desired.

Antiferro- and metamagnetism in the S = 7 / 2 hollandite analog Eu Ga 2 Sb 2

Recent work analyzing the impact of nonsymmorphic symmetries on electronic states has given rise to the discovery of multiple types of topological matter. Here we report the single-crystal synthesis and magnetic properties of Eu Ga 2 Sb 2 , a Eu-based antiferromagnet structurally consisting of pseudo-1D chains of Eu ions related by a nonsymmorphic glide plane. Here we find the onset of antiferromagnetic order at T N = 8K. Above T N the magnetic susceptibility is isotropic. Curie-Weiss analysis suggests competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, with p eff = 8.1 μ B as expected for 4f 7 J = S = 7/2 Eu 2+ ions. Below T N and at low applied magnetic fields, an anisotropy develops linearly, reaching χ ⊥ /χ ∥ = 6 at T = 2K. There is concomitant metamagnetic behavior along χ ∥ , with a magnetic field of μ 0 H ≈ 0.5 T sufficient to suppress the anisotropy. Independent of crystal orientation, there is a continuous evolution to a field-polarized paramagnetic state with M = 7μ B /Eu 2+ at μ 0 H = 2 T as T → 0 K. Specific-heat measurements show a recovered magnetic entropy of ΔS mag ≈ 16.4 Jmol –1 K –1 from T ~ 0 K to T = T N , close to the expected value of R ln(8) for an S = 7/2 ion, indicating negligible low-dimensional spin fluctuations above T N . We find no evidence of unusual behaviors arising either from the dimensionality or the presence of the nonsymmorphic symmetries.

Hydrogen Bonding Optimizes Singlet Fission in Carboxylic Acid Functionalized Anthradithiophene Films

The rate of singlet fission, the process of generating two triplet excitons with photoexcitation of one singlet exciton, depends on a combination of singlet/triplet energy balance and intermolecular coupling. In this work, we perform carboxylic acid functionalization of anthradithiophene (ADT) derivatives that result in hydrogen bonds that drive molecular orientation and strong electronic coupling of polycrystalline ADT thin films, leading to ultrafast singlet fission without significant enthalpic driving force. ADT with a single carboxylic acid group exhibits weak intermolecular coupling and slow and inefficient singlet fission, much like the parent ADT, and substitution of different alkylsilyl solubilizing groups has little effect. However, the addition of two carboxylic acid groups on either end of the long axis favors significant coupling and crystallinity in as-deposited thin films that increase the effective singlet fission rate by roughly three orders of magnitude. The properties of the triplet pair, particularly its propensity to form long-lived independent triplets, are also influenced by the degree of long-range intermolecular coupling. The enhancement of intermolecular coupling specific to singlet fission using the ubiquitous cyclic hydrogen bonding motif could impact triplet pair utilization schemes in a variety of contexts.
