International solar system exploration - Opportunities and obstacles

A review is conducted of the exploration of the solar system carried out with the aid of various types of spacecraft during the past two decades, taking into account also space missions planned for thy next few years. A wealth of information has been obtained regarding the planets and their satellites. However, there remain many important questions concerning the solar system, and a continuation of space exploration for the solution of these questions appears highly desirable, particularly when the comparatively little cost of these missions is taken into account. However, major fiscal limitations within the U.S. economy have led to pressure to postpone any new solar system exploration projects unless there can be major reductions in their cost. A special committee has been studying the options for future low-cost solar system exploration missions, giving attention also to some options for international implementation. Various aspects of joint space projects are examined.

Exploring the outer planets

Initial, current and planned United States projects for the spacecraft exploration of the outer planets of the solar system are presented. Initial plans were developed in the mid-1960's for the exploration of the outer planets by utilizing the gravity-assist technique during a fortuitous alignment of the outer planets in the Grand Tour Project, however although state-of-the-art space technology could have supported the project, it was considered too expensive, therefore politically infeasible. Subsequently, the Pioneer Project was undertaken to explore the asteroid belt and the environment around Jupiter and the Voyager Project was undertaken to send two spacecraft to fly by Jupiter and utilize its gravity assist to reach Saturn. The successful Pioneer 10 and 11 missions have provided important information on the effects of the asteroid belt and the severe radiation environment around Jupiter, and Voyager 1 has collected information about Jupiter, its magnetic fields and radiation zones, and its satellites. Project Galileo is intended to be launched in January 1982 to conduct an intensive investigation of Jupiter, its satellites and immediate environment and a Saturn Orbiter dual probe mission and a Uranus orbiter are also under consideration.

Mariner 9 and the exploration of Mars.

Review of the progress of Mariner series spacecraft with details on the Mariner 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 missions and equipment. The systems of Mariner 9 are discussed in great detail. Mariner 9 photographs of Mars, Phobos, Diemos, Martian peaks, Nix Olympica, Martian equatorial region, and some other Martian surface details are included. Diagrams of Mariner 9 daily operating profile, of Mariner 9 TV coverage vs time in orbit, and of Mariner 9 in superior conjunction on Sept. 7, 1972 are also given. It is hoped that Martian landing missions as planned in 1975 by the Viking project will be more productive than Mariner 9 in answering the question of whether life did, or does, exist on that planet.
