Successful cleanroom installation of PIP-II SSR2 coupler using robotic arm

To minimize the contamination of SRF cavities, remote installation techniques are needed during the installation of components. Recent work at Fermilab has been performed to begin the process of developing techniques for assembling cavities using robotics. Multiple alignment methods were prototyped including alignment and computer vision methods. Using a remotely controlled robotic arm, the alignment and installation of couplers have been successfully performed on prototype PIP-II SSR2 cavities in a cleanroom. The installation process will be shown to show to demonstrate the potential of future installations on other cavities and cavity ancillaries.

Strategies for mitigating residual magnetic field effect on pre-production PIP-II SSR2 cryomodule performance

This paper outlines the strategy aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of residual magnetic fields on the performance of pre-production SSR2 superconducting cavities within the context of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. Residual magnetic fields can significantly impact cavity performance, leading to reduced quality factor. To address this challenge, our strategy integrates various approaches including magnetic shielding, careful selection of materials, quality controls aimed at measuring magnetic permeability, magnetic hygiene to reduce residual magnetic field at the installation phase. Additionally, experimental studies are being planned to analyze the behavior of the cavities under different magnetic field conditions, and the effectiveness of advanced demagnetization procedures.

Integration of computer vision system to track the alignment SRF cavities into the test cryostat for PIP-II at Fermilab

PIP-II cryomodules use a computer vision system (H-BCAMs system) to monitor the alignment of SRF cavities and focusing lenses during assembly, testing, and operation. This contribution details the integration of the H-BCAMs into the Spoke Test Cryostat (STC) at Fermilab, which is utilized for cold testing SRF cavities prior to their integration into the string assembly. Thermal and structural finite element analyses were employed to estimate the cavities’ deformations, to be validated during cold testing in the STC using H-BCAMs. Notably, this marks the first instance of H-BCAMs integration into a cryostat and operation within a cryogenic environment.

High pressure rinse simulations for PIP-II SRF cavities

The implementation of High Pressure Rinse (HPR) not only ensures thorough cleaning of the inner high purity niobium surface of Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities but also unlocks their full potential for achieving peak performance. By effectively removing contaminants and impurities, HPR sets the stage for enhanced superconducting properties, improved energy efficiency, and superior operational stability. A simulation tool has been developed, facilitating the accurate prediction of both the quality and effectiveness of the rinsing process before its execution in the cleanroom. This tool, the focus of this paper, stands as a pivotal advancement in optimizing Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavity preparation. Furthermore, our paper will also present correlations with cavity cold testing results, demonstrating the practical applicability and reliability of the simulation predictions in real-world scenarios.

Optimization of static heat loads of the PIP-II cryomodules based on prototype HB650 cryomodule test results

During the first cool down of the prototype HB650 cryomodule (pHB650 CM), high static heat loads have been measured compared to the estimation. Several analysis and calculations have been performed to explain this difference which led to cool down this cryomodule two additional times. Before each cool down, repairs and upgrades have been done, and instrumentations were added to identify the issues and quantify their impact on the heat loads. Based on these findings, the production cryomodule design and assembly process have been updated to align the future heat loads measurements with the estimations.

Simulations of field emitters and multipacting in PIP-II Single Spoke Resonator Type-2

It has been found in benchmark tests that some Single Spoke Resonator Type-2 (SSR2) cavities have early field emission onset as well as strong multipacting barriers. A longstanding hypothesis is that field-emitted electrons in the high electric field accelerating gap can migrate and ignite multipacting bands in the low electric field regions of the cavity periphery. In this study, we use simulation techniques to examine multipacting behavior in SSR2 cavities from electrons seeded in common field emitter locations. Additionally, we investigated seed locations for areas in SSR2 cavities which may have poor coverage during high pressure water rinsing and compared the multipacting behavior.

Standardization of Ancillary Installation Tooling for SRF Cavities at Fermilab

For assemblies of cavities in cleanrooms, single-use tooling systems are made for the alignment and installation of ancillary components such as couplers and bellows. To try and minimize the amount of tooling sets used, a design has been created to standardize alignment features to allow for assembly of different components with one set of tooling. A prototype set of tooling has been developed to with the required degrees of freedom for multiple assemblies while minimizing deformation during the assembly process. Prototype designs have been created for PIP-II SSR2 and 650 Cavities and for AUP Crab Cavities. Using 3D printing, this tooling can be quickly adjusted to allow for different ancillary components. The development process and status of the design will be discussed.

Robotic Systems integration for cleanroom SRF assembly at Fermilab

Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cryomodule assembly is a critical process that demands the highest levels of contamination control in a cleanroom to ensure product quality and reliability. Within the cleanroom environment, human-driven activities remain the major source of uncontrolled particulate. Moreover, the precise manual alignment of components often exceeds expected timeframes, increasing the risk of particulate migration into the critical inner space of the SRF resonant cavity, and causing extended discomfort for workers. Automation comes as a natural solution to address these challenges. The goal of this activity is to set up and integrate a robotic system to support cavity coupler installation in the cleanroom environment. Initially, remote control of a 6-axis collaborative robot arm will be implemented as an introductory step towards automation in the cleanroom. Subsequently, the system will be further enhanced by integrating manipulation capabilities through an appropriate end-effector, and computer vision technology to enable accurate pose estimation. This comprehensive approach aims to achieve a fully automated and adaptable assembly process in the partially structured cleanroom environment, thereby enhancing efficiency and mitigating existing challenges for better product quality and workers safety.

PIP-II Project Overview and Status

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project is an essential upgrade to Fermilab’s particle accelerator complex to enable the world’s most intense neutrino beam for LBNF/DUNE and a broad particle physics program for many decades to come. PIP-II will deliver 1.2 MW of proton beam power from the Main Injector, upgradeable to multi-MW capability. The central element of PIP-II is an 800 MeV superconducting radio frequency (SRF) linac, which comprises a room temperature front end followed by an SRF section. The SRF section consists of five different flavors of cavities/cryomodules, including Half Wave Resonators (HWR), Single Spoke and elliptical resonators operating at, or above, state-of-the-art parameters. The first two PIP-II cryomodules, Half Wave Resonator (HWR) and Single Spoke Resonator 1 (SSR1) were installed in the PIP-II Injector Test facility (PIP2IT) and have accelerated beam to above 17 MeV. PIP-II is the first U.S. accelerator project that will be constructed with significant contributions from international partners, including India, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Poland. The project was baselined in April 2022, and the construction phase is underway.

HB650 Cryomodule Design: From Prototype to Production

In early 2023 the assembly of the prototype HB650 cryomodule (pHB650 CM) was completed and cold tests started to evaluate its performance. The lessons learned from the design, assembly and preliminary cold tests of this cryomodule, and from the design of the SSR2 pre-production cryomodule played a fundamental role during the design optimization process of the production HB650 cryomodule (HB650 CM). Several workshops have been organized to share experiences and solve problems. This paper presents the main design changes from pHB650 to the HB650 production cryomodules and their impact on the heat loads.

Characterization of Additive Manufacturing Materials for String Assembly in Cleanroom

Beamline components, such as superconducting radio frequency cavities and focusing lenses, need to be assembled together in a string while in a cleanroom environment. The present contribution identifies and characterizes materials for additive manufacturing that can be used in a cleanroom. The well known advantages of additive manufacturing processes would highly benefit the design and development of tooling needed for the mechanical support and alignment of string components. Cleanliness, mechanical properties, and leak tightness of the chosen materials are the main focus of this contribution, which also paves the way for the integration of such materials in cryomodule assemblies. Results reported here were obtained in the framework of the PIP-II project at Fermilab.

Prototype HB650 Cryomodule Heat Loads Simulations

During the design stages of the PIP-II cryomodules, many analytical calculations and FEA have been performed on simpler geometry in order to estimate the heat loads and also to optimize the design. To better analyze the cryomodule cold tests, simulations have been performed with MATLAB to determine the temperature of the main components during cool down and to determine the heat loads of the cryomodule. These simulations have been applied to the High Beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule design and compared to the cold tests performed on it.
