MSR Transient Simulation and MSRE Transient Benchmark with SAM and SPECTRA

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in molten salt reactors (MSRs) for their potential advantages compared to reactors that rely on solid fuel. In response to such interest, many methods and codes have been developed to capture the unique features of MSRs. Among them, SPECTRA and SAM are two system analysis codes that have been enhanced to include MSR-specific modeling capabilities, including delayed neutron precursor drift and modified point kinetics equations. This paper discusses the efforts taken to verify and validate these features. A standard MSR system test problem was developed to verify and demonstrate the capability of SPECTRA and SAM on the MSR transient simulation. Sixteen transients were simulated. Further, the results obtained from SPECTRA and SAM show good agreement. The Molten Salt Reactor Experiment transient experiments were reviewed and selected to validate the SPECTRA and SAM codes. The experiments included pump startup and coastdown tests at zero power, reactivity insertion tests at different power levels, frequency tests, and a natural convection test. The simulation results from SPECTRA and SAM show good agreement with the experimental data.

Sensitivity study of parameters important to Molten Salt Reactor Safety

This paper presents a molten salt reactor (MSR) design parameter sensitivity study using a nodal dynamic modelling methodology with explicitly modified point kinetics equation and Mann’s model for heat transfer. Six parameters that can impact MSR safety are evaluated. A MATLAB-Simulink model inspired by Thorcon’s 550MW th MSR is used for parameter evaluations. A safety envelope was formed to encapsulate power, maximum and minimum temperature, and temperature-induced reactivity feedback. The parameters are perturbed by ±30%. The parameters were then ranked by their subsequent impact on the considered safety envelope, which ranks acceptable parameter uncertainty. The model is openly available on GitHub.

Scalable modular dynamic molten salt reactor system model with decay heat

Nodal dynamic models allow rapid reduced-order simulations of complex systems. This paper presents a publicly available system dynamic model of a molten salt reactor system with a topology of the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE), in MATLAB/Simulink, building upon a model previously published and validated with MSRE data. It adds scaling of nominal power, dynamic representation of decay heat generation, a generic decay heat removal system, improved documentation, modularity, and test cases. One hour of system transient runs in less than 10 min on a laptop. This model is intended for first order engineering calculations, developing insights into system transient behavior, equipment sizing, parameter sensitivity studies. The model contains an easy to use toolkit which can be customized and expanded to describe any molten salt reactor system. Finally, scenarios involving off-normal transients are presented. Relation between shutdown reactivity insertions, decay heat removal, core recriticality, and safe shutdown conditions are discussed.
