Integrated Technology for Cost-Effective CO2 Capture and Formic Acid Production: Modeling, Optimization, and Economic Analysis

A novel reactive technology is being investigated that electrochemically converts CO2 into valuable chemicals, particularly formic acid. This work focuses on identifying the optimal design and operation of an integrated membrane-based CO2 capture unit with the electrochemical conversion process. In this setup, the CO2 in the flue gas permeates through a CO2-selective membrane and enters an electrolyzer to produce formic acid, creating an integrated reaction module. To refine the chemical product, gas products from the electrolyzer are directed to a pressure swing adsorption unit, while the liquid product undergoes refinement to achieve commercial-grade formic acid using reactive distillation. A membrane CO2 capture model and an electrochemical conversion model have been developed using the IDAES Integrated Platform (Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy System), facilitating rigorous flowsheet modeling and process design and optimization.

IDAES-PSE 2.6.0 Release

The Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems (IDAES) Integrated Platform is a versatile computational environment offering extensive process systems engineering (PSE) capabilities for optimizing the design and operation of complex, interacting technologies and systems. IDAES enables users to efficiently search vast, complex design spaces to discover the lowest cost solutions while supporting the full process modeling lifecycle, from conceptual design to dynamic optimization and control. The extensible, open platform empowers users to create models of novel processes and rapidly develop custom analyses, workflows, and end-user applications. IDAES-PSE 2.6.0 Release Highlights Upcoming Changes IDAES will be switching to the new Pyomo solver interface in the next release. Whilst this will hopefully be a smooth transition for most users, there are a few important changes to be aware of. The new solver interface uses a different version of the IPOPT writer (“ipopt_v2”) and thus any custom configuration options you might have set for IPOPT will not carry over and will need to be reset. By default, the new Pyomo linear presolver will be activated with ipopt_v2. Whilst are working to identify any bugs in the presolver, it is possible that some edge cases will remain. IDAES will begin deploying a new set of scaling tools and APIs over the next few releases that make use of the new solver writers. The old scaling tools and APIs will remain for backward compatibility but will begin to be deprecated. New Models, Tools and Features New Intersphinx extension automatically linking Jupyter notebook examples to project documentation New end-to-end diagnostics example demonstrated on a real problem New complementarity formulation for VLE with cubic equations of state, backward compatibility for old formulation New solver interface with presolve (ipopt_v2) in support of upcoming changes to the initialization and APIs methods, with default set to ipopt to maintain backwards compatibility; this will deprecate once all examples have been updated New forecaster and parameterized bidder methods within grid integration library Updated surrogates API and examples to support Keras 3, with backwards compatibility for older formats such as TensorFlow SavedModel (TFSM) Updated costing base dictionary to include the 2023 cost year index value Updated ProcessBlock to include information on the constructing block class Updated Flowsheet Visualizer to allow visualize() method to return value and functions Bug Fixes Fixed bug in the Modular Property Framework that would cause errors when trying to use phase-based material balances with phase equilibria. Fixed bug in Modular Properties Framework that caused errors when initializing models with non-vapor-liquid phase equilibria. Fixed typos flagged by June update to crate-ci/typos and removed DMF-related exceptions Minor corrections of units of measurement handling in power plant waste/transport costing expressions, control volume material holdup expressions, and BTX property package parameters Fixed throwing >7500 numpy deprecation warnings by replacing scalar value assignment with element extraction and item iteration calls Testing and Robustness Migrated slow tests (>10s) to integration, impacting test coverage but also yielding a nearly 30% decrease in local test runtime Pinned pint to avoid issues with older supported Python versions Pinned codecov versions to avoid tokenless upload behavior with latest version Bumped extensions to version 3.4.2 to allow pointing to non-standard install location Deprecations and Removals Python 3.8 is no longer supported. The supported Python versions are 3.9 through 3.12 The Data Management Framework (DMF) is no longer supported. Importing idaes.core.dmf will cause a deprecation warning to be displayed until the next release The SOFC Keras surrogates have been removed. The current version of the SOFC surrogate model in the examples repository is a PySMO Kriging model.

Framework for Optimization, Quantification of Uncertainty, and Surrogates, and CCSI2 Toolset Capabilities

This poster will present key features and capabilities of the CCSI2 software platform to relevant technical and research audience members at the 2024 FECM / NETL Carbon Management Research Project Review Meeting. Attendees will learn about available process models in the CCSI2 Toolset, as well as design of experiments and machine learning features in the Framework for Optimization, Quantification of Uncertainty, and Surrogates (FOQUS) software to support pilot plant work.

Techno-economic Analysis and Optimization of Point Source Solvent-Based Carbon Capture Systems at High CO2 Capture Levels for NGCC Power Plants

This poster was presented at the 2024 FECM / NETL Carbon Management Research Project Review Meeting held during Aug 5-9, 2024. It summarizes the research done as a part of CCSI2 for determining the optimal design and operating conditions of an MEA solvent-based carbon capture system connected to a commercial scale NGCC plant, operating at CO2 capture levels beyond 90%. The techno-economic optimization approach is outlined, along with the trends of key cost and performance indicators across high capture levels.

CCSI Toolset 3.22 Release

CCSI Toolset 3.22 Release Highlights The Sequential Design of Experiments user interface was updated to resolve an issue where the results would fail to plot in some cases (e.g., Non-Uniform Space Filling designs). The Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence module was updated to support Keras 3 and to reflect changes made to dependencies’ syntax. A check was added to ensure PSUADE is installed and available at FOQUS startup. If PSUADE is not installed, a link to the FOQUS documentation is displayed and FOQUS is closed. The copyright year was updated to include 2024 in places where it had not previously been updated. Typographical errors were corrected to improve clarity in variable names and documentation. The FOQUS documentation was updated to reflect the fact that ALAMO can have two executables and indicates the correct executable to add to the Settings path. SimSinter was updated to version 3.1.0. This version removed gPROMS support and included security updates.

Jacobian-based Model Diagnostics and Application to Equation Oriented Modeling of a Carbon Capture System

Equation-oriented (EO) modeling has the potential to enable the effective design and optimization of the operation of advanced energy systems. However, advanced modeling of energy systems results in a large number of variables and non-linear equations, and it can be difficult to search through these to identify the culprit(s) responsible for convergence issues. The Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems Integrated Platform (IDAES-IP) contains a tool to identify poorly scaled constraints and variables by searching for rows and columns of the Jacobian matrix with small L2-norms so they can be rescaled. A further singular value decomposition can be per-formed to identify degenerate sets of equations and remaining scaling issues. This work presents an EO model of a flowsheet developed for post-combustion carbon capture using a monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent system as a case study. The IDAES diagnostics tools were successfully applied to this flowsheet to identify problems to improve model robustness and enable the optimization of process design and operating conditions of a carbon capture system.
