Multidimensional spectroscopy of magneto-excitons at high magnetic fields

We perform two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy on magneto-excitons in GaAs at magnetic fields and observe Zeeman splitting of the excitons. The Zeeman components are clearly resolved as separate peaks due to the two-dimensional nature of the spectra, leading to a more accurate measurement of the Zeeman splitting and the Landé g factors. Quantum coherent coupling between Zeeman components is observed using polarization dependent one-quantum two-dimensional spectroscopy. We use two-quantum two-dimensional spectroscopy to investigate higher four-particle correlations at high magnetic fields and reveal the role of the Zeeman splitting on the two-quantum transitions. The experimental two-dimensional spectra are simulated using the optical Bloch equations, where many-body effects are included phenomenologically.

Sigma observations of the low mass X-ray binaries of the galactic bulge

The soft gamma-ray telescope (35-1300 keV) SIGMA aboard the high energy GRANAT space observatory has been monitoring the Galactic Bulge region for more than 2000 h of effective time since March 1990. In the resulting average 35-75 keV image we detected ten sources at a level of greater than 5 standard deviations, 6 of which can be identified with low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB). Among them, one is the 1993 X-ray nova in Ophiuchus (GRS 1726-249), one is an X-ray pulsar (GX 1+4), two are associated with X-ray bursters (GX 354-0 and A 1742-294) and two with bursting X-ray binaries in the globular clusters Terzan 2 and Terzan 1. Their spectral and long term variability behavior as measured by SIGMMA are presented and discussed.

Development of a composite repair and the associated inspection intervals for the F-111C stiffener runout region

This paper presents an overview of the structural aspects of the design and development of a local reinforcement designed to lower the stresses in a region of the F-111C wing fitting which is prone to cracking. The stress analysis, with particular emphasis on the use of a unified constitutive model for the cyclic inelastic response of the structure, representative specimen testing, thermal analysis and full scale static testing of this design are summarized.

Detection and period measurements of GX1+4 at hard x ray energies with the SIGMA telescope

The galactic Low Mass X ray Binary GX1+4 was detected by the coded aperture hard X ray gamma ray SIGMA telescope during the Feb. to April 1991 observations of the galactic center regions. The source, whose emission varied during the survey of a factor greater than 40 pct., reached a maximum luminosity in the 40 to 140 energy range of 1.03 x 10(exp 37) erg/s (D = 8.5 kpc), thus approaching the emission level of the 1970 to 1980 high state. Two minute flux pulsations were detected on Mar. 22 and on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1. Comparison with the last period measurements shows that the current spin-down phase of GX1+4 is ending. Concerning the proposed association of this source with the galactic center 511 keV annihilation emission, upper limits were derived.

Low-energy gamma rays from Cygnus X-1

The Cyg X-1 was observed by the balloonborne telescope OPALE, in June 1976. The high energy spectrum of the source, which was in its superlow state, was seen to extend well beyond 1 MeV. The observed low energy gamma ray component of Cyg X-1 is compared with the predictions of recent models involving accretion onto a stellar black hole, and including a possible contribution from the pair annihilation 511 keV gamma ray line.

Local interstellar medium and gamma-ray astronomy

The recent improvement of the calibration of the galaxy counts used as an interstellar absorption tracer modifies significantly the picture of the local interstellar medium (ISM). Consequently, previous analyses of the gamma ray emission from the local ISM involving galaxy counts have to be revised. The implications regarding the cosmic ray (CR) density in the local ISM are considered and in particular within Loop I, a nearby supernova remnant (SNR).

COS-B observations of the high energy gamma radiation from the galactic disc

During the first months of operation, COS-B has observed galactic high energy gamma rays from the galactic disc. In the galactic center and Vela regions the disc emission distribution was measured. From these data the existence of a local ( 1 kpc) and a distant ( 3 kpc) emitting region is apparent in the general direction of the inner galaxy.
