Rotary Transformer Seals Power In

Rotary transformer originally developed for spacecraft transfers electrical power from stationary primary winding to rotating secondary without sliding contacts and very little leakage of electromagnetic radiation. Transformer has two stationary primary windings connected in parallel. Secondary, mounted on a shaft that extends out of housing, rotates between two windings of primary. Shaft of secondary is composed of electrically conducting inner and outer parts separated by an insulator. Electrical contact is made from secondary winding, through shaft, to external leads.

Non-contacting power transfer device

A transformer for coupling AC electrical energy from a stationary element to a rotating element without the use of sliding contacts is described. The transformer is of the rotary type and includes a ferrite core and two primary windings which are stationary with respect to a seconary winding which rotates within an annular cavity adjacent an axial bore in the core. The core is comprised of two cup type core halves. Electrical connection to the secondary winding is made through a split bobbin assembly which couples to a coaxial shaft assembly located in the axial bore. The electrical coupling to the coaxial shaft assembly is made through a continuous transverse channel connecting the axial bore with the annular cavity. The transverse channel forms a single air gap; however, it is not open directly to free space but is shielded by the magnetic permeable material of the core halves.

Buck/boost regulator

A voltage regulated DC to DC converter uses an inductor and a capacitor as storage elements. The inductor is composed of two windings having a common junction. A transformer with a center tap connected to the common junction of the two windings is connected at either end of its winding to ground through controlled switches. One winding of the inductor and either end of the transformer winding are connected by power diodes to the capacitor which supplies the output voltage to a load. The other winding of the inductor is connected to a fourth power diode as a clamping diode. Input voltage is supplied to the inductor through a third controlled switch. A pulse width modulator connected to the output of the converter alternately closes and opens the switches connected to either end of the transformer winding and also closes the switch supplying input voltage to the inductor each time either of the switches connected to the ends of the transformer winding are closed. The duty cycle of the closing and opening of the several switches is adjusted by the pulse modulator to regulate the output voltage.

Simple buck/boost voltage regulator

Circuit corrects low or high supply voltage, produces regulated output voltage. Circuit has fewer components because inductory/transformer combination and pulse-width modulator serve double duty. Regulator handles input voltage variation from as low as one half output voltage to as high as input transistor rating. Solar arrays, fuel cells, and thermionic generators might use this regulator.

Low-insertion-resistance current monitor

Circuit automatically corrects for drifting offset voltage, providing long-term stability for current-monitoring instruments. Circuit is stable over wide temperature range; therefore, no compensation for temperature variations is necessary. Besides consuming little power, circuit introduces negligible noise on monitored lines and responds linearly to monitored circuit.

A digital computer simulation and study of a direct-energy-transfer power-conditioning system

An investigation of the behavior of the power-conditioning system as a whole is a necessity to ensure the integrity of the aggregate system in the case of space applications. An approach for conducting such an investigation is considered. A description is given of the application of a general digital analog simulator program to the study of an aggregate power-conditioning system which is being developed for use on the International Ultraviolet Explorer spacecraft. The function of the direct energy transfer system studied involves a coupling of a solar array through a main distribution bus to the spacecraft electrical loads.

A digital computer simulation and study of a direct-energy-transfer power-conditioning system

A digital computer simulation technique, which can be used to study such composite power-conditioning systems, was applied to a spacecraft direct-energy-transfer power-processing system. The results obtained duplicate actual system performance with considerable accuracy. The validity of the approach and its usefulness in studying various aspects of system performance such as steady-state characteristics and transient responses to severely varying operating conditions are demonstrated experimentally.

Solar bus regulator and battery charger for IMP's H, I, and J

Interplanetary Monitoring Probe (IMP) spacecrafts H, I, and J utilize a direct energy transfer (DET) type of power system operating from a solar array source. A shunt type of regulator prevents the bus voltage from exceeding a preset voltage level. The power system utilizes a single differential amplifier with dual outputs to control the battery charge/shunt regulator and the discharge regulator. A two-voltage level, current limited, series charger and a current sensor control battery state of charge of the silver-cadmium battery pack. Premature termination of the battery charge is prevented by a power available gate that also initiates charge current to the battery upon availability of excess power.

Converter provides constant electrical power at various output voltages

Power converter, using an inverted flyback technique, transfers electrical energy at a constant rate from a solar cell source to a number of individual batteries, which are to be charged one at a time. The converter inverts the polarity of the solar cell source and provides the correct charging voltage.

Battery charge regulator is coulometer controlled

Coulometer controlled battery charge regulator controls nickel/cadmium type primary cells used in space applications. The use of the coulometer as an ampere hour measuring device permits all available current to go to the battery until full charge state is reached, at which time the charge rate is automatically reduced.

Control circuit ensures solar cell operation at maximum power

Control circuit enables a solar cell power supply to deliver maximum electrical power to a load. It senses the magnitude of the slope of the voltage-current characteristic curve and compares it to a reference voltage which represents the slope corresponding to the desired operating limits.
