Searching for Strongly Coupled Dark Sectors with Unsupervised and Generative Learning

Recipient of the URA Early Career Award for groundbreaking searches for dark matter arising from strongly coupled dark sectors with the CMS detector, pioneering work in ML-based model-independent anomaly detection for collider and astrophysics experiments, and leadership in the development of new AI/ML techniques to improve event reconstruction and detector simulation in particle physics, as well as novel strategies to accelerate AI inference and throughput with heterogeneous computing using coprocessors as a service.

Efficiency of ML Anomaly Detection Triggers for Emerging Jets

Novel machine learning-based anomaly detection Level 1 (L1) triggers are currently under development at CMS, namely AXOL1TL and CICADA. The former employs a variational autoencoder, while the latter utilizes a convolutional autoencoder. These triggers aim to balance rate reduction with model independence, enabling the selection of potentially significant events that might be overlooked by traditional triggers relying on basic kinematic variable selections. Consequently, they have the potential to enhance signals indicative of physics beyond the Standard Model, such as those associated with emerging jets. Such signals are predicted by models featuring a composite dark sector where long-lived particles decay into Standard Model jets with displaced tracks and numerous vertices. This study evaluates the efficiency of these anomaly detection triggers in selecting events with emerging jets produced via the s-channel production of two dark quarks.

Dark QCD: the Next Frontier in Dark Matter

There has been a surge of interest in hidden valley models with new, strong forces, sometimes called "dark QCD". These models propose asymmetric, composite dark matter in the form of "dark hadrons" that would evade direct and indirect bounds as well as typical collider DM searches for large missing transverse momentum accompanied by radiation. However, evidence of these models can still be found in collider datasets by targeting their unique phenomenological signatures, which include semi visible jets, emerging jets, and soft unclustered energy patterns. We will present the first experimental results for all of these signatures, which have made significant strides in exploring the vast space of dark QCD models. We will further discuss the prospects for dramatic improvements in sensitivity using machine learning.
