Synthesis of high-density olivine LiFePO 4 from paleozoic siderite FeCO 3 and its electrochemical performance in lithium batteries

The lithium-ion cathode material olivine LiFePO 4 (LFP) has been synthesized for the first time from natural paleozoic iron carbonate (FeCO 3 ). The ferrous carbonate starting material consists of the mineral siderite at about 92 wt. % purity. Because FeCO 3 has divalent iron, the reaction with lithium dihydrogen phosphate (LiH 2 PO 4 ) provides a unique method to develop iron-(II) containing LFP in an inert atmosphere. Since siderite FeCO 3 is a common mineral that can be directly mined, it may, therefore, provide an inexpensive route for the production of LFP. After carbon-coating, the LFP yields a capacity in the range of 80–110 mAh g -1 LFP (in one chosen specimen sample), which is lower than commercially available LiFePO 4 (150–160 mAh g -1 LFP ). However, the tap density of LFP derived from siderite is noticeably high at 1.65 g cm -3 . The material is likely to be improved with powder purification, nanosized processing, and more complete carbon-coating coverage with increased optimization.

The Impact of Different Substituents in Fluorinated Cyclic Carbonates in the Performance of High Voltage Lithium-Ion Battery Electrolyte

Ethylene carbonate (EC) has been used as the Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) former in the conventional electrolyte for decades. However, its low anodic stability leads to severe capacity decay during cycling under high voltage operation. Therefore, finding a viable electrolyte with high anodic stability and the ability to form robust SEI for high voltage lithium-ion batteries is of primary importance. In this study, a series of electrolytes containing various fluorinated cyclic carbonates as the SEI former have been designed, synthesized and evaluated. Linear sweep voltammetry study suggested that fluorinated cyclic carbonates generally possess higher anodic stability than EC. Based on the cycling performance of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NMC532)/ graphite full cells, the electrolyte with DFEC/FEMC (1.0 M LiPF 6 ) inhibited the oxidation side reaction on the cathode and forms a vigorous SEI on the anode. The high voltage NMC532/Graphite cell utilizing the novel electrolyte exhibits excellent cycling durability under both room and elevated temperature. The superior performance of the DFEC based electrolyte was further unveiled by SEM, EDAX and XRD. Both the anode and cathode of the full cell employing DFEC based electrolyte retained their intrinsic structures after cycling while the electrodes cycled in conventional electrolyte showed severe degradation.

Additives for high voltage lithium ion batteries

This invention relates to a method for preparing an electrochemical cell comprising the sequential steps of preparing a solution of a lithium salt in an non-aqueous solvent containing an additive compound, and maintaining the solution at a temperature in the range of about 20 to about 30° C. for about 5 to 10 days to form an aged electrolyte; assembling an electrochemical cell from an anode, a cathode, and the aged electrolyte; and electrochemically subjecting the electrochemical cell to formation cycling. The additive compound comprises one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of: (R3SiO)3B, (R3SiO)3XY, (R3SiO)3P, (R′O)3PO, (R3Si)3X′, R3SiOS(O)2R′; (R3Si)OC(═O)R′; wherein each R and R′ independently is a hydrocarbyl group; X is P or B; Y is O or S; X is Ti or Al. Electrochemical cells and batteries also are described.
