Mariner-Jupiter-Saturn Low Energy Charged Particle Experiment

The Low Energy Charged Particle Experiment will be launched on the Mariner-Jupiter-Saturn spacecraft in August 1977. The experiment has been designed to perform particle measurements in the intense radiation belts of the Jovian and Saturnian environments, and to provide detailed spectral analysis of both solar and galactic particles in interplanetary space. A single instrument uses 23 solid-state detectors configured in two distinct detector subsystems: one optimized for interplanetary and interstellar measurements, the other for specific particle species, energies, and intensities expected near the planets.

Pulse amplitude discriminator threshold calibration

Closed-loop digital circuit, insensitive to drift with age, monitors input signals in particle detector. Basic elements of calibrator are clock circuit, weighting circuit, integrator, and chopper.

Instrumentation for the Atmospheric Explorer photoelectron spectrometer

The photoelectron spectrometer (PES) is part of the complements of scientific instruments aboard three NASA Atmosphere Explorer (AE) satellites. The PES measures the energy spectrum, angular distribution, and intensity of electrons in the earth's thermosphere. Measurements of energies between 2 and 500 eV are made at altitudes as low as 130 km. The design, characteristics, and performance of the instrument are described.
