Probing the Deuteron at Very Large Internal Momenta

We measure H-2(e, e' p)n cross sections at 4-momentum transfers of Q(2) = 4.5 +/- 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) over a range of neutron recoil momenta p(r), reaching up to similar to 1.0 GeV/c. We obtain data at fixed neutron recoil angles theta(nq) = 35 degrees, 45 degrees, and 75 degrees with respect to the 3-momentum transfer (q)over-right-arrow. The new data agree well with previous data, which reached p(r) similar to 500 MeV/c. At theta(nq) = 35 degrees and 45 degrees, final state interactions, meson exchange currents, and isobar currents are suppressed and the plane wave impulse approximation provides the dominant cross section contribution. We compare the new data to recent theoretical calculations, where we observe a significant discrepancy for recoil momenta P-r > 700 MeV/c.

Dispersive corrections in elastic electron-nucleus scattering: an investigation in the intermediate energy regime and their impact on the nuclear matter

Measurements of elastic electron scattering data within the past decade have highlighted two-photon exchange contributions as a necessary ingredient in theoretical calculations to precisely evaluate hydrogen elastic scattering cross sections. This correction can modify the cross section at the few percent level. In contrast, dispersive effects can cause significantly larger changes from the Born approximation. The purpose of this experiment is to extract the carbon-12 elastic cross section around the first diffraction minimum, where the Born term contributions to the cross section are small to maximize the sensitivity to dispersive effects. The analysis uses the LEDEX data from the high resolution Jefferson Lab Hall A spectrometers to extract the cross sections near the first diffraction minimum of 12 C at beam energies of 362 MeV and 685 MeV. The results are in very good agreement with previous world data, although with less precision. The average deviation from a static nuclear charge distribution expected from linear and quadratic fits indicate a 30.6% contribution of dispersive effects to the cross section at 1 GeV. The magnitude of the dispersive effects near the first diffraction minimum of 12 C has been confirmed to be large with a strong energy dependence and could account for a large fraction of the magnitude for the observed quenching of the longitudinal nuclear response. These effects could also be important for nuclei radii extracted from parity-violating asymmetries measured near a diffraction minimum.

Search for bound states of the eta-meson in light nuclei

A search for nuclear-bound states of the eta meson was carried out. Targets of lithium, carbon, oxygen, and aluminum were placed in a pion(+) beam at 800 MeV/c. A predicted eta bound state in O-15* (E sub x approx. = 540 MeV) with a width of approx. 9 MeV was not observed. A bound state of a size 1/3 of the predicted cross section would have been seen in this experiment at a confidence level of 3sigma (P is greater than 0.9987).

Reaction Li-6/p, pt/ at 590 MeV.

A lithium target enriched to 95.6 per cent of Li-6 and 0.685 cm thick was bombarded in the 590-MeV proton beam of a synchrocyclotron. Coincident events were detected in a double telescope arrangement. The characteristics of the unobserved three-nucleon residual system calculated for each event include the missing energy, the longitudinal recoil, and the transverse recoil. The cross-section data obtained indicate that zero recoil momentum for the unobserved three-nucleon recoil system is the most likely situation.

The reaction proton deuteron yields triton pion at 470 and 590 MeV

The preliminary results from a study of the deuteron (proton, positive pion)triton reaction are reported. The differential cross section for this reaction was measured for a number of center of mass angles from 37 deg to 160 deg at incident proton energies of 470 and 590 MeV. The cross sections measured at 590 MeV agree with predictions made considering a two-nucleon process. The 470 MeV data shows a peak in the backward direction which is not predicted by this mechanism.

Elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470, and 590 MeV in the backward hemisphere.

The elastic pd differential cross section at center-of-mass angles between 91 and 164 deg was determined for 316, 364, 470, and 590 MeV proton scattering in a backward hemisphere. For the three largest energies, the cross sections were within 10% of each other at any given angle larger than 130 deg. The extrapolated 180 deg differential cross section remained nearly constant from 316 to 590 MeV.

Elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from H, D, He-3, and He-4.

Study of the elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He-4 nuclei. The p-p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p-D, p-He-3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV.

The elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere was studied at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory. Preliminary data resulting from this study, which include the proton laboratory scattering angle, the laboratory differential cross section, the proton center-of-mass scattering angle, and the center-of-mass differential cross section, are tabulated, given graphically, and analyzed.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV

Preliminary results are reported from a part of the data obtained at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory for the elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere. The data is averaged over a proton angle interval which corresponds to the angular resolution on the correlation angle, given the proton bin used in the data analysis.
