Power and Signal Integrity Findings in a FPGA Layout for an Aerospace Application

Design principles concerning the use of FPGA are of particular importance in aerospace applications since the neglect of such design principles can cause catastrophic effects in aerospace system, as it will be explained in this paper. FPGA design rules such as power conditioning and signal integrity for properly interfacing high speed FPGA with its interface circuits are discussed in this paper as it relates to aerospace systems. Signal integrity to avoid crosstalk within a FPGA has not been a great concern because most of the attention over the years had been on signal integrity at the PCB level. However, this paper shows a real example of crosstalk within a FPGA in an aerospace application.

Analysis and Simulations of Space Radiation Induced Single Event Effects and Transients

Spacecraft electronic are affected by the space radiation environment. Among the different types of radiation effects that can affect spacecraft electronics is the single event transient (SET). The space environment is responsible for many of the single event transients which can upset the performance of the spacecraft avionics hardware. In this chapter we first explore the origins of single event transients, then explore the modeling of a single event transient in digital and analog circuit. The chapter also addresses the concept of crosstalk that could develop among digital circuits in the present of a SET event. The chapter also provides a discussion of SET hardening. We then provide a discussion concerning propagation of a single event transient event at the local, subsystem, and system level in a spacecraft using two different models, one of the models developed by the author, known as the state transition model. The final goal of the chapter is to provide a qualitatively methodology for assessing single event transients and its effects so that spacecraft avionics engineers can develop either hardware or software countermeasures in their designs. SET is not a form of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in its origin, but semantically SET is very similar to EMI because they are both caused a current source not previously accounted for. SET has the same effects as EMI and it can cause interference problems in electronic circuits via multiple coupling mechanisms similar to EMI, and therefore makes such circuits incompatible.

Modeling from Local to Subsystem Level Effects in Analog and Digital Circuits Due to Space Induced Single Event Transients

Single Event Transients in analog and digital electronics from space generated high energetic nuclear particles can disrupt either temporarily and sometimes permanently the functionality and performance of electronics in space vehicles. This work first provides some insights into the modeling of SET in electronic circuits that can be used in SPICE-like simulators. The work is then directed to present methodologies, one of which was developed by this author, for the assessment of SET at different levels of integration in electronics, from the circuit level to the subsystem level.

Surviving the Lead Reliability Engineer Role in High Unit Value Projects

A project with a very high unit value within a company is defined as a project where a) the project constitutes one of a kind (or two-of-a-kind) national asset type of project, b) very large cost, and c) a mission failure would be a very public event that will hurt the company's image. The Lead Reliability engineer in a high visibility project is by default involved in all phases of the project, from conceptual design to manufacture and testing. This paper explores a series of lessons learned, over a period of ten years of practical industrial experience by a Lead Reliability Engineer. We expand on the concepts outlined by these lessons learned via examples. The lessons learned are applicable to all industries.

Correlating the EMC analysis and testing methods for space systems in MIL-STD-1541A

A study was conducted to improve the correlation between the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis models stated in MIL-STD-1541A and the suggested testing methods used for space systems. The test and analysis methods outlined in MIL-STD-1541A are described, and a comparative assessment of testing and analysis techniques as they relate to several EMC areas is presented. Suggestions on present analysis and test methods are introduced to harmonize and bring the analysis and testing tools in MIL-STD-1541A into closer agreement. It is suggested that test procedures in MIL-STD-1541A must be improved by providing alternatives to the present use of shielded enclosures as the primary site for such tests. In addition, the alternate use of anechoic chambers and open field test sites must be considered.
