New organic and organometallic salts for second-order nonlinear optics

A series of organometallic and organic salts, in which the cation has been designed to have a large molecular hyperpolarizability, has been prepared. Variation of the counterion (anion) in many cases leads to materials with large powder second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, the highest of which is roughly 2000 times that of a urea reference.

Optical limiting in solutions of metallo-phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines

Optical limiting measurements have been made on solutions of several metal containing phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines. Measurements at 532nm using nanosecond pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser show limiting throughputs of 1-10 millijoules with mild focussing in alcohol solutions with nominal transmissions of 30-70 percent. Measurements on chloro-aluminum-phthalocyanine solutions utilizing individual 30 psec pulses or trains (spanning about 100nsec) of modelocked pulses have shown even lower limiting throughputs. Thus, the dynamic range of the limiting behavior has been shown to cover at least three orders of magnitude. Prompt limiting is attributed to strong singlet-singlet (S1-Sn) absorption, whereas the longer time limiting behavior is postulated to result from strong triplet-triplet (T1-Tn) absorption. In addition to these studies, efforts have been underway to identify materials with reduced limiting throughput and improved optical transmission characteristics.

Diagnostics of silane and germane radio frequency plasmas by coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy

In situ plasma diagnostics using coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy have shown different dissociation characteristics for GeH4 and SiH4 in radio frequency (rf) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of amorphous silicon germanium alloy (a-SiGe:H) thin films. The GeH4 dissociation rate in rf plasmas is a factor of about 3 larger than that of SiH4. Plasma diagnostics have revealed that the hydrogen dilution of the SiH4 and GeH4 mixed plasma plays a critical role in suppressing the gas phase polymerization and enhancing the GeH4 dissociation.

Second and third order nonlinear optical properties of conjugated molecules and polymers

Second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties of some newly synthesized organic molecules and polymers are reported. Powder second-harmonic-generation efficiencies of up to 200 times urea have been realized for asymmetric donor-acceptor acetylenes. Third harmonic generation chi(3)s have been determined for a series of small conjugated molecules in solution. THG chi(3)s have also been determined for a series of soluble conjugated copolymers prepared using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The results are discussed in terms of relevant molecular and/or macroscopic structural features of these conjugated organic materials.

Nonlinear susceptibilities of finite conjugated organic polymers

Tight-binding calculations of the length dependence of the third-order molecular hyperpolarizability for polyenes and polyynes are reported. The pi-electron wave functions were determined by exploiting the limited translational symmetry of the molecules. Perturbation theory was used to calculate the longitudinal component of the electronic nonresonant hyperpolarizability. This is the first two-'band' calculation of third-order hyperpolarizabilities on finite pi-electron systems of varying length. In contrast to the results of the one-'band' models, the hyperpolarizability densities increase rapidly and then, after about 10-15 repeating units, approach an asymptotic value.

Picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) study of vibrational dephasing of carbon disulfide and benzene in solution

The vibrational dephasing of the 656/cm mode (nu1, a1g) of CS2 and the 991/cm mode (nu2, a1g) of benzene have been studied as a function of concentration in mixtures with a number of solvents using a ps time-resolved CARS technique. This technique employs two tunable synchronously-pumped mode-locked dye lasers in a stimulated Raman pump, coherent anti-Stokes Raman probe time-resolved experiment. Results are obtained for CS2 in carbon tetrachloride, benzene, nitrobenzene, and ethanol and for benzene nu2 in CS2. The dephasing rates of CS2 nu1 increase on dilution with the polar solvents and decrease or remain constant on dilution with the nonpolar solvents. The CS2/benzene solutions show a contrasting behavior, with the CS2 nu1 dephasing rate being nearly independent of concentration whereas the benzene nu2 dephasing rate decreases on dilution. These results are compared to theoretical models for vibrational dephasing of polyatomic molecules in solution.
