Importance of Measuring SiC Fiber Diameter Prior to Conducting Fiber Stress Rupture / Creep Tests?

A very significant amount of SiC fiber creep / stress rupture data has been generated and reported in the past by various researchers. Due to the difficulty of measuring fiber diameter and the amount of time required to make accurate measurements, researchers have quite often used an accepted average diameter value (which is fiber type-dependent) when determining the load that will be applied to a fiber to generate a specific stress during testing. Of course, this approach has less of an effect on data scatter when the individual fibers in a tow have very similar diameters (minimal fiber-to-fiber variation in diameter). NASA GRC has begun using a laser fiber diameter measurement system, and we are considering eventually characterizing each SiC fiber prior to testing in creep/stressed oxidation. The laser system will be described in this presentation, as well as examples of fiber diameter data obtained in the past at AFRL. We are currently discussing the merits of using an average diameter in testing/data analysis vs. using a measured or "known" diameter. Information about our current intermediate temperature SiC fiber stress rupture testing will also be provided.

Effect of Mechanical and Thermal Loading Histories on Residual Properties of SiCf/SiC Ceramic Matrix Composites

Silicon Carbide based Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are attractive materials for use in high-temperature structural applications in the aerospace and nuclear industries. Under high stresses and temperatures, creep degradation is the dominant damage mechanism in CMCs. Consequently, chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMC) incorporating SylramicTM-iBN SiC fibers coated with boron nitride (BN) interphase and CVI-SiC matrix were tested to examine creep behavior in air at a range of elevated temperatures of (2200 - 2700 F). Samples that survived creep tests were evaluated via RT fast fracture tensile tests to determine residual properties, with the use of acoustic emission (AE) to assess stress dependent damage initiation and progression. Microscopy of regions within the gage section of the tested specimens was performed. Observed material degradation mechanisms are discussed.

General Aviation Pilot Advisory and Training System (GAPATS)

The goal of this project is to achieve a validated General Aviation Pilot Advisor and Training System (GAPATS) engineering prototype, implemented according to commercial software standards and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues of certification. Phase 2 builds on progress during Phase 1, which exceeded proposed objectives. The basic technology has been transferred from previous NASA research (1989 to 1994). We anticipate a commercially licensable prototype, validated by pilots in a flight simulator and in a light twin-engine research aircraft for FAA certification, by January 1998.
