Detection of the 610 micron /492 GHz/ line of interstellar atomic carbon

The ground-state transition of neutral atomic carbon, 3P1-3P0, has been detected in the interstellar medium at the frequency of 492.162 GHz determined in the laboratory by Saykally and Evenson (1980). The observations were made from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory using an InSb heterodyne bolometer receiver. The line was detected as strong emission from eight molecular clouds and apparently provides a widely useful probe of the interstellar medium.

Aircraft search for millimeter-wavelength emission by stratospheric ClO

Three millimeter-wavelength transitions of ClO were searched for in the stratospheric emission spectrum during May-August 1977 using aircraft-based instruments. The measurements indicate that if stratospheric ClO has a vertical distribution of the form predicted by present photochemical models, then the ClO volume mixing ratio at the profile peak did not exceed 10 to the -9th at the time and place of the measurements. The observed spectra suggest the presence of ClO in the stratosphere but do not provide a definitive detection.

Observation of the J = 2 to J = 1 transition of interstellar CO at 1.3 millimeters

The NRAO 36-foot antenna at Kitt Peak with a novel type of millimeter-wave superheterodyne receiver was used in observations of 1.3-mm line interstellar radiation due to J ? 2-1 transitions of C(12)0(16) and C(13)0(16). The liquid-helium-cooled hot-electron bolometer mixer of the superheterodyne receiver was used as the detecting element. The Orion Nebula CO system was found to be thermalized, showing a peak excitation temperature of about 76 K.
