Microstructural evaluation of the creep behavior in L-PBF Ni-based superalloys

This presentation at ICAM 2024 Conference focuses on the commonalities and differences in the creep rupture behavior and creep mechanisms for three distinct classes of laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) Ni-based superalloys (γ’-precipitate strengthened Haynes® 282®, γ’/γ”/δ-precipitate strengthened Alloy 718, and solid-solution strengthened Alloy 625) as compared to conventionally processed counterparts. A comparison of Larson-Miller parameter plots establishes that these alloys perform statistically within the bounds established for the wrought product, despite having dissimilar microstructural features and other artefacts associated with PBF-LB manufacturing and post-processing heat treatment. To understand the failure and the impact of composition, minor phases, and deformation defects on creep behavior, the fractography has been performed and microstructures have been evaluated in detail with SEM-EDS, EBSD, and HAADF-STEM. The underlying diffusional and dislocation creep mechanisms associated with this microstructural evaluation is discussed. This work is supported by NETL-FWP-1022408 Advanced Turbines.

Material Discovery and Design Principles of Perovskite Oxides for Reversible Solid Oxide Cells (R-SOC)

Reversible solid oxide cells (R-SOCs) are highly efficient devices for energy conversion and storage, capable of operating for both hydrogen utilization and production. In fuel cell mode, an R-SOC consumes hydrogen or natural gas to generate electricity, while in electrolysis mode, it produces hydrogen from steam. The discover of new materials with rapid oxygen surface exchange kinetics and enduring stability is crucial for the economically viable commercialization of R-SOCs. To facilitate this pursuit, we conducted extensive Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and developed Machine Learning (ML) models to predict critical catalytic properties essential for R-SOCs, such as oxygen surface exchange/diffusivity, and area-specific resistance (ASR). BaCoxFeyZrzO3-d(BFCZ)(x+y+z=1) emerged as a promising family of electrode materials with high activity and stability, validated through systematic experimental study. Moreover, a robust numerical multiphysics model was developed to optimize materials and microstructure parameters, providing the ability to predict the performance of functional R-SOCs.

Cation Migration and LSCF/SDC Decomposition Related to Long-Term Operation Mode as Revealed by Electron Microscopy

This study utilized energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) in order to track cation migration and related particle decomposition for air electrode components of solid oxide cells. The influence of a Sm-doped ceria (SDC) barrier layers was assessed for three operation modes (fuel cell, electrolysis, reversible) over long time periods (1000-1500 hours). Composition profiles across air electrode/electrolyte interfaces indicated negligible accumulation of La/Sr cations to the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte during operation. Instead, air electrode particles composed of SDC and/or La-Sr-Co-Fe-oxides (LSCF) exhibited decomposition by Sr evaporation and Sm migration to LSCF particle edges.
