Electron-impact ionization of the Pb atom

Electron-impact ionization cross sections are calculated for the ground configuration of the Pb atom. Time-dependent close-coupling cross sections for the direct ionization of the 6 s and 6 p subshells leading to single ionization are calculated with and without a polarization potential. Configuration-average distorted-wave cross sections for the direct ionization of the 6 s and 6 p subshells leading to single ionization are also calculated with and without a polarization potential. We find the time-dependent close-coupling cross sections using a polarization potential to be in good agreement with convergent-close-coupling cross sections using a polarization potential. The total direct ionization cross sections are compared to two sets of experimental measurements. The differences between the direct ionization cross sections and the experimental measurements are mainly due to indirect ionization cross sections coming from the 6 s 2 6 p 2 → 6 s 6 p 3 excitation followed by autoionization..

Electron-impact excitation of Li II in the distorted-wave approximation

The 1(1)S yields 2(3)P electron-impact-excitation cross section for Li II is calculated in the distorted-wave approximation. Two forms of the distorted-wave method are examined; in the first form both the initial and final wave functions are distorted, while in the second form only the initial wave function is distorted. In both forms a partial-wave expansion of the scattered amplitude is made, and exchange is incorporated in a consistent manner. The effects of including more than one configuration in the target-state wave function are also examined. For incident energies greater than 90 eV, distorted-wave calculations agree moderately well with recent experimental and theoretical results.

Calculation of resonant effects in electron-impact excitation of positive ions Application to oxygen VII

The general reaction theory of Feshbach is applied to the calculation of resonant effects in near-threshold electron-positive-ion excitation. The theory divides configuration space into open- and closed-channel parts, resonance effects being described by the closed-channel part. The open-channel part is handled in a distorted-wave approximation to the set of open-channel coupled equations. Various methods are suggested for handling the closed-channel part. However, an 'attached-excited-target approximation' is used explicitly, which is further approximated by a set of uncoupled closed-channel equations. As an example, the 1 1S-2 1P excitation cross section of O VII below the 3 3S threshold is calculated. Various distorted-wave approximations are investigated and results from most of them are quite similar. Resonant effects arising from the attachment of the colliding electron with the 3 3S state are found to be small, but other close-lying n = 3 states have not yet been included.

Two-photon excitation of atomic oxygen

A standard perturbation expansion in the atom-radiation-field interaction is used to calculate the two-photon excitation cross section for the 1s2 2s2 2p4 3p to 1s2 2s2 3(4S)3p 3P transition in atomic oxygen. The lowest-order summation over bound and continuum intermediate states is handled by solving the equivalent inhomogeneous differential equation. Higher-order electron-correlation effects are also examined.

Two photon excitation of atomic oxygen

A standard perturbation expansion in the atom-radiation field interaction is used to calculate the two photon excitation cross section for 1s(2) 2s(2) 2p(4) p3 to 1s(2) 2s(2) 2p(3) (s4) 3p p3 transition in atomic oxygen. The summation over bound and continuum intermediate states is handled by solving the equivalent inhomogeneous differential equation. Exact summation results differ by a factor of 2 from a rough estimate obtained by limiting the intermediate state summation to one bound state. Higher order electron correlation effects are also examined.

Electron-impact excitation of O III in the distorted-wave approximation

The 3P - 1D electron-impact excitation cross section within the ground configuration of doubly ionized oxygen is calculated in the distorted-wave approximation. An essential element of the present treatment is that orthogonality is not assumed between core and scattering orbitals of the same angular symmetry. Resonance structures are included through the use of quantum-defect theory. Near threshold the effect of an isolated autoionization resonance in the dominant 2D(0) partial wave is found to be important, in agreement with previous close-coupling results.

Electron-impact excitation of carbon and silicon in the distorted-wave approximation

The 3P to 1D electron-impact excitation cross section within the ground configuration of both neutral carbon and silicon is calculated in the distorted-wave approximation of the two-state Hartree-Fock coupled equations. An essential element of the present treatment is that orthogonality to core orbitals is not assumed in deriving equations for the scattering orbitals. A local adiabatic polarization potential is also added to the distorted-wave equations. Both elements are necessary in getting good agreement with close-coupling results for carbon to low impacting energies. The agreement is sufficiently good that predictions for silicon should be accurate to within a factor of 2.
