Minispacecraft for a multiple-asteroid rendezvous mission

The development of the Multiple Asteroid Rendezvous Tracker and Explorer spacecraft, which is designed for the analysis of the composition and the motion of several main-belt asteroids, is discussed. The mission includes a laboratory lander craft (the main lab) and several minispacecraft. The main lab will be equipped with a complete sample analysis laboratory and multiple external sensors. Each of the minispacecraft, which are much smaller than the main lab and contain only a few instruments, is targeted to rendezvous with an asteroid, on which it will land and perform a preliminary surface analysis. This will identify the most scientifically interesting asteroid. The main lab will then be sent to this asteroid for performing a detailed analysis including soil sampling.

Graduate level design - Courses and projects: An untapped resource

The authors describe their experiences at a major space engineering university (the University of Texas at Austin) in the use of graduate level design courses and projects to produce information and tools that are of use to undergraduate design classes, graduate students, and industry. The information produced to date includes a spacecraft subsystems information document, a mission design tool (a FORTRAN subroutine library), a series of space mission characterizations, and a set of spacecraft characterizations.

A trajectory generation and system characterization model for cislunar low-thrust spacecraft. Volume 2: Technical manual

The documentation of the Trajectory Generation and System Characterization Model for the Cislunar Low-Thrust Spacecraft is presented in Technical and User's Manuals. The system characteristics and trajectories of low thrust nuclear electric propulsion spacecraft can be generated through the use of multiple system technology models coupled with a high fidelity trajectory generation routine. The Earth to Moon trajectories utilize near Earth orbital plane alignment, midcourse control dependent upon the spacecraft's Jacobian constant, and capture to target orbit utilizing velocity matching algorithms. The trajectory generation is performed in a perturbed two-body equinoctial formulation and the restricted three-body formulation. A single control is determined by the user for the interactive midcourse portion of the trajectory. The full spacecraft system characteristics and trajectory are provided as output.
