What is the Role of Nb in Nickel-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Nickel-rich layered metal oxide LiNi 1–y–z Mn y Co z O 2 (1 – y – z ≥ 0.8) materials are the most promising cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. However, they lose more than 10% of their capacity on the first cycle, and interfacial/structural instability causes capacity fading. Coating and substitution are possible direct and effective solutions to solve these challenges. In this Letter, Nb coating and Nb substitution on LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) is easily produced through a scalable wet chemistry method followed by sintering from 400 to 800 °C. A Li-free Nb oxide treatment is found to remove surface impurities forming a LiNbO 3 /Li 3 NbO 4 surface coating, to reduce the first capacity loss and to improve the rate performance. Furthermore, Nb substitution stabilizes the structure, as evidenced by less heat evolution on heating, thus providing better long cycling stability with a 93.2% capacity retention after 250 cycles.

Structural Phase Transitions of NbO 2 : Bulk versus Surface

The metal to insulator transition of NbO 2 has been predicted to be a result of a structural phase transition (SPT) governed by Peierls physics. However, direct observation of the SPT using experimental techniques is still restricted by the extremely high transition temperature (810 °C) and the proclivity for NbO 2 to oxidize into Nb 2 O 5 above 400 °C when exposed to air. In this work, we address these issues and employ temperature-dependent X-ray spectroscopy to describe the SPT of NbO 2 from the bulk to surface. Temperature-dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (T-EXAFS) reveals a gradual weakening of the bulk Nb dimers over a large temperature range, which is indicative of a second-order Peierls mechanism. From these measurements, we determine the critical dimer distance to be 2.77 Å. Our T-EXAFS observations are supported by density functional theory of the phonon dispersion and the electronic density of states of NbO 2 , which conclude that the dimerization is responsible for the insulating phase. The dimerization does not extend to the topmost layers, where an oxygen rich surface reconstruction is preferred irrespective of temperature even in extremely reducing environments; changes in the low-energy electron diffraction patterns are attributed to oxygen concentration and are independent of the underlying bulk phase transitions of NbO 2 .

Vanadyl Phosphates A x VOPO 4 (A = Li, Na, K) as Multielectron Cathodes for Alkali-Ion Batteries

Vanadyl phosphates comprise a class of multielectron cathode materials capable of cycling two Li + , about 1.66 Na + , and some K + ions per redox center. In this review, structures, thermodynamic stabilities, and ion diffusion kinetics of various A x VOPO 4 (A = Li, Na, K, NH 4 ) polymorphs are discussed. Both the experimental data and first-principle calculations indicate kinetic limitations for alkali metal ions cycling, especially between for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, and metastability of phases with x > 1. This creates challenges for multiple-ion cycling, as the slow kinetics call for nanosized particles, which being metastable and reactive with organic electrolytes are prone to side reactions. Thus, various synthesis approaches, surface coating, and transition metal ion substitution strategies are discussed here as possible ways to stabilize A x VOPO 4 structures and improve alkali metal ion diffusion. Finally, the role of advanced characterization techniques, such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, diffraction, pair distribution function analysis and 7 Li and 31 P NMR, in understanding the reaction mechanism from both structural and electronic points of view is emphasized.

Influence of Polymorphism on the Electronic Structure of Ga 2 O 3

The search for new wide-band-gap materials is intensifying to satisfy the need for more advanced and energy-efficient power electronic devices. Ga 2 O 3 has emerged as an alternative to SiC and GaN, sparking a renewed interest in its fundamental properties beyond the main β-phase. Here, three polymorphs of Ga 2 O 3 , α, β, and ε, are investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy, and ab initio theoretical approaches to gain insights into their structure–electronic structure relationships. Valence and conduction electronic structure as well as semicore and core states are probed, providing a complete picture of the influence of local coordination environments on the electronic structure. State-of-the-art electronic structure theory, including all-electron density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, provides detailed understanding of the spectroscopic results. The calculated spectra provide very accurate descriptions of all experimental spectra and additionally illuminate the origin of observed spectral features. This paper provides a strong basis for the exploration of the Ga 2 O 3 polymorphs as materials at the heart of future electronic device generations.

Directly measuring the structural transition pathways of strain-engineered VO 2 thin films

Epitaxial films of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) on rutile TiO 2 substrates provide a means of strain-engineering the transition pathways and stabilizing of the intermediate phases between monoclinic (insulating) M1 and rutile (metal) R end phases. In this work, we investigate structural behavior of epitaxial VO 2 thin films deposited on isostructural MgF 2 (001) and (110) substrates via temperature-dependent Raman microscopy analysis. The choice of MgF 2 substrate clearly reveals how elongation of V–V dimers accompanied by the shortening of V–O bonds triggers the intermediate M2 phase in the temperature range between 70–80 °C upon the heating–cooling cycles. Consistent with earlier claims of strain-induced electron correlation enhancement destabilizing the M2 phase our temperature-dependent Raman study supports a small temperature window for this phase. The similarity of the hysteretic behavior of structural and electronic transitions suggests that the structural transitions play key roles in the switching properties of epitaxial VO 2 thin films.

Valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy of vanadium oxide and lithiated vanadyl phosphate materials

In this work, we report valence-to-core (VTC) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements and theoretical calculations of the electrochemical sequence ε-VOPO 4 , ε-LiVOPO 4 , ε-Li 2 VOPO 4 and the reference oxides V 2 O 3 , VO 2 , and V 2 O 5 . In our analysis of these results, we establish a framework for interrogating chemical bonding that is generally applicable to a wide range of systems, including complex, extended inorganic compounds. While this latter regime has garnered less focused application than, e.g. , metalloenzymes in many excellent catalysis studies, we show that the technique provides high utility in materials-focused energy storage research. Here, sensitivities to the local atomic structure and hybridization schemes are discussed in detail. Similarly, the effect of lithiation on oxidation, delocalization, and shifts in ligand valence energy levels are all readily apparent in the analyzed results. Finally, the TDDFT projections clearly reveal the directional dependencies of the valence band at each of the vanadium sites. Our results demonstrate laboratory-based X-ray spectroscopy instrumentation is a viable route for attaining well-resolved VTC-XES features for inorganic compounds of 3d transition metals, even for samples of limited quantity or suffering from sensitivity to the atmosphere. The experimental results are in good agreement with results produced by real-space Green's function and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, respectively. Hence, we propose that VTC-XES, when equipped with appropriate theoretical support, can be a valuable complement to X-ray absorption pre-edge features for more detailed characterization of a compound's electronic structure. We expect similar analyses will find application in a broad range of materials chemistry research and provide both fundamental and applied insights.
