Cooling rate dependence of charge density wave phases in 1 T -TaS 2 studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray diffraction

The role of dynamics in the charge density wave (CDW) phases of 1T-TaS 2 , especially in accessing metastable phases, is still under scrutiny. We investigated cooling rate dependence on low-temperature CDW phases in this material by scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray diffraction. In the majority of cases, we found the typical low temperature commensurate CDW and identified no other differences between samples that were fast cooled vs slow cooled from room temperature. In rare cases (1/18 STM experiments and 1/30 XRD experiments), we found a multi-domain structure in the low temperature CDW. The domain structure and metallic behavior revealed by STM and STS measurements of this phase are in excellent agreement with the previously reported metallic mosaic CDW phase.

Unraveling the magnetic ground state in the alkali-metal lanthanide oxide Na 2 ⁢Pr⁡O 3

Here, a comprehensive set of muon spin spectroscopy and neutron scattering measurements supported by ab initio and model Hamiltonian simulations have been used to investigate the magnetic ground state of Na 2 ⁢PrO 3 . μSR reveals a Néel antiferromagnetic order below T N ~ 4.9K, with a small static magnetic moment m static ≤ 0.22 μ B /Pr collinearly aligned along the c axis. Inelastic neutron measurements reveal the full spectrum of crystal field excitations and confirm that the Pr 4+ ground-state wave function deviates significantly from the Γ 7 limit that is relevant to the Kitaev model. Single- and two-magnon excitations are observed in the ordered state below T N =4.6K and are well described by nonlinear spin wave theory from the Néel state using a magnetic Hamiltonian with Heisenberg exchange J=1 meV and symmetric anisotropic exchange Γ/J=0.1, corresponding to an XY model. Intense two magnon excitations are accounted for by g-factor anisotropy g z /g ± = 1.29. A fluctuating moment δm 2 = 0.57 ⁢(22) ⁢μ$^2_B$/Pr extracted from the energy and momentum integrated inelastic neutron signal is reduced from expectations for a local J = 1/2 moment with average g factor g avg ≈ 1.1. Together, the results demonstrate that the small moment in Na 2 ⁢PrO 3 arises from crystal field and covalency effects and the material does not exhibit significant quantum fluctuations.

Elucidating the Role of Dimensionality on the Electronic Structure of the Van der Waals Antiferromagnet NiPS 3

Abstract The sustained interest in investigating magnetism in the 2D limit of insulating antiferromagnets is driven by the possibilities of discovering, or engineering, novel magnetic phases through layer stacking. However, due to the difficulty of directly measuring magnetic interactions in 2D antiferromagnets, it is not yet understood how intra layer magnetic interactions in insulating , strongly correlated, materials can be modified through layer proximity. Herein, the impact of reduced dimensionality in the model van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3 is explored by measuring electronic excitations in exfoliated samples using Resonant Inelastic X‐ray Scattering (RIXS). The resulting spectra shows systematic broadening of NiS 6 multiplet excitations with decreasing layer count from bulk down to three atomic layers (3L). It is shown that these trends originate from a decrease in transition metal‐ligand and ligand–ligand hopping integrals, and by charge‐transfer energy evolving from Δ = 0.83 eV in the bulk to 0.37 eV in 3L NiPS 3 . Relevant intralayer magnetic exchange integrals computed from the electronic parameters exhibit a decrease in the average interaction strength with thickness. This study underscores the influence of inter layer electronic interactions on intra layer ones in insulating magnets, indicating that magnetic Hamiltonians in few‐layer insulating magnets can greatly deviate from their bulk counterparts.

Non-Centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 Obtained Under High Pressure

Sr 2 IrO 4 with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Hubbard repulsion (U) hosts Mott insulating states. The similar crystal structure, magnetic and electronic properties, particularly the d-wave gap observed in Sr 2 IrO 4 enhanced the analogies to cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductor, La 2 CuO 4 . The incomplete analogy was due to the lack of broken inversion symmetry phases observed in Sr 2 IrO 4 . Here, under high pressure and high temperature conditions, we report a non-centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 . The crystal structure and its noncentrosymmetric character were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM). The magnetic characterization confirms the Ir 4+ with $\textit{S}$ = 1/2 at low temperature in Sr 2 IrO 4 with magnetic ordering occurred at around 86 K, where a larger moment is observed than the ambient pressure Sr 2 IrO 4 . Moreover, the resistivity measurement shows three-dimensional Mott variable-range hopping existed in the system. Further, this non-centrosymmetric Sr 2 IrO 4 phase appears to be a unique material to offer further understanding of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.
