Role of the third dimension in searching for Majorana fermions in α-RuCl 3 via phonons

Understanding phonons in α-RuCl 3 is critical to analyze the controversy around the observation of the half-integer thermal quantum Hall effect. While many studies have focused on the magnetic excitations in α-RuCl 3 , its vibrational excitation spectrum has remained relatively unexplored. We investigate the phonon structure of α-RuCl 3 via inelastic neutron-scattering experiments and density-functional-theory calculations. Our results show excellent agreement between experiment and first-principles calculations. After validating our theoretical model, we extrapolate the low-energy phonon properties. We find that the phonons in α-RuCl 3 that either propagate or vibrate in the out-of-plane direction have significantly reduced velocities and therefore have the potential to dominate the observability of the elusive half-integer plateaus in the thermal Hall conductance. In addition, we use low-energy interlayer phonons to resolve the low-temperature stacking structure of our large crystal of α-RuCl 3 , which we find to be consistent with that of the R$\bar{3}$ space group, in agreement with neutron diffraction.

Dislocation-Limited Thermal Conductivity in LiF: Revisiting Perturbative Models

We revisit models to describe phonon-dislocation interactions and resulting dislocation-limited thermal conductivity (k), particularly as applied to describe the temperature-dependent k behavior of LiF with significant dislocation densities. Coupling semiempirical models of phonon scattering from dislocation strain fields provided by Klemens and Carruthers with density functional theory description of the phonons and input parameters, we find that both models significantly overpredict the measured k of LiF, as found previously. However, more direct application of the quantum perturbation theory description, from which the models were derived, gives significantly stronger phonon-dislocation scattering and strongly underpredicts the measured k data. We revisit the derivation of phonon-dislocation-strain field scattering and provide numerical details regarding its implementation. This work demonstrates that quantum perturbative calculations, now accessible to modern computational architectures, may provide a reasonable description of dislocation-limited k in materials as governed by phonon-strain field interactions provided that questions regarding the relevant strain field range can be resolved.

Success and breakdown of the T-matrix approximation for phonon-disorder scattering

Here, we examine the validity of the widely used T-matrix approximation for treating phonon-disorder scattering by implementing an unfolding algorithm that allows simulation of disorder up to tens of millions of atoms. The T-matrix approximation breaks down for low-energy flexure phonons that play an important role in thermal transport in two-dimensional materials. Furthermore, insights are developed into the success of the T-matrix approximation in describing maximally mass disordered systems. To achieve this, the phonon unfolding formalism is generalized to describe mass disorder and strongly nonperturbative features of the spectrum are connected to the Boltzmann quasiparticle picture.

GaN thermal transport limited by the interplay of dislocations and size effects

Measurements and first-principles calculations probe the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity (k) of GaN films with large densities of highly oriented dislocations. We demonstrate that phonon-dislocation scattering is weaker than suggested by previous measurements, likely due to sample and experiment size effects. Nonetheless, dislocation-limited k is observed in samples with large dislocation densities and at lower temperatures where k anisotropy is also observed. Combination of experiment and theory give insights into the interplay of thermal resistance mechanisms limiting GaN functionalities and suggest pathways for tuning k via defect engineering.
