Analysis of shielded CPW discontinuities with air-bridges

The effect of air-bridges on the performance of various coplanar waveguides (CPW) discontinuities is studied. Specifically, the coupled open-end CPW's and the short-end shunt CPW stub discontinuities are considered. The high frequency effect of the air-bridge is evaluated using a hybrid technique. At first, the frequency dependent equivalent circuit of the planar discontinuity without the air-bridge is derived using the Space Domain Integral Equation (SDIE) method. Then, the circuit is modified by incorporating the air-bridge's parasitic inductance and capacitance which are evaluated using a simple quasi-static model. The frequency response of each discontinuity with and without the air-bridge is studied and the scattering parameters are plotted in the frequency range 30-50 GHz for typical CPW dimensions.

Theoretical and experimental characterization of coplanar waveguide discontinuities for filter applications

A full-wave analysis of shielded coplanar waveguide two-port discontinuities based on the solution of an appropriate surface integral equation in the space domain is presented. Frequency-dependent scattering parameters for open-end and short-end coplanar waveguide (CPW) stubs are computed using this method. The numerically derived results are compared with measurements performed in the frequency range 5-25 GHz and show very good agreement. From the scattering parameters, lumped-element equivalent circuits have been derived to model the discontinuities. The inductors and capacitors of these models have been represented by closed-form equations, as functions of the stub length, to compute the circuit element values for these discontinuities.

Experimental investigations on channelized coplanar waveguide

A new variant of coplanar waveguide (CPW) which was termed channelized coplanar waveguide (CCPW) is presented. Measured propagation characteristics for CCPW such as epsilon(eff) and unloaded Q as a function of geometrical parameters and frequency are presented. The measured and modeled epsilon(eff) are also compared. Equivalent circuit model element values are presented for a CCPW open circuit and a CCPW right angle bend. A CCPW matched T-junction, matched 1:3 junction, and a novel coax-to-CCPW in-phase, N-way, radial power divider are also demonstrated.

A new rectangular waveguide to coplanar waveguide transition

A new rectangular waveguide to coplanar waveguide (CPW) transition is described. The transition uses a ridge in one of the broad walls of the waveguide and a nonradiating slot in the opposite wall to split and rotate the electromagnetic fields of the rectangular waveguide TE10 mode into the CPW fields.

Coplanar waveguide fed phased array antenna

A K-band four element linear phased array was designed and tested. Coplanar waveguide (CPW) is used for the microwave distribution system. A CPW to twin strip transition is used to interface with the printed dipole antennas. MMIC phased shifters are used for phase control.

Coplanar waveguide discontinuities for P-I-N diode switches and filter applications

A full wave space domain integral equation (SDIE) analysis of coplanar waveguide (CPW) two port discontinuities is presented. An experimental setup to measure the S-parameters of such discontinuities is described. Experimental and theoretical results for CPW realizations of pass-band and stop-band filters are presented. The S-parameters of such structures are plotted in the frequency range 5 to 25 GHz.

30 GHz Commercial Satellite Receivers

NASA's research and development work in satellite communications for the past 10 years has included a major technology thrust aimed at opening the Ka frequency band to commercial exploitation. This has included the development and testing of advanced system network architectures, on-board switching and processing, multibeam and phased array antennas, and satellite and ground terminal RF and digital hardware. Development work in system hardware has focused on critical components including power amplifiers, satellite IF switch matrices, low noise receivers, baseband processors, and high data rate bandwidth efficient modems. This paper describes NASA's work in developing and testing 30 GHz low noise satellite receivers for commercial space communications uplink applications. Frequencies allotted for fixed service commercial satellite communications in the Ka band are 27.5 - 30.0 GHz for uplink transmission and 17.7 - 20.2 GHz for downlink transmission. The relatively large 2.5 GHz bandwidth lends itself to wideband, high data rate digital transmission applications.

Computing Resonances Of Waveguide-To-Microstrip Transitions

Simplified mathematical model used to predict resonant frequencies of antipodal-finline waveguide-to-microstrip transitions. Makes it possible to place undesired resonances outside desired frequency band during design process; eliminates much of iteration in design process and thereby reduces both time and cost of design.

Channelized coplanar waveguide: Discontinuities, junctions, and propagation characteristics

A new variant of CPW which has been termed channelized CPW, CCPW, is presented. Measured and computed propagation characteristics are presented. Lumped equivalent circuit element values for a CCPW open circuit and right angle bend have been obtained. CCPW power divider junctions and a coax-to-CCPW in-phase, radial power divider are also presented.

Performance of five 30 GHz satellite receivers

Technology development contracts funded by NASA have resulted in five 30 GHz satellite receivers of various design. The results of tests performed at NASA-Lewis to determine the operating characteristics of the receivers and their ability to perform in a digital satellite link are presented and discussed.

Modeling of some coplanar waveguide discontinuities

Presented are lumped equivalent circuit models for several coplaar waveguide discontinuities such as an open circuit, a series gap, and a symmetric step, and their element values as a function of the discontinuity physical dimensions. The model element values are de-embedded from measured S parameters. The frequency dependence of the effective dielectric constant is measured and compared to computed values.

A new model for broadband waveguide-to-microstrip transition design

A new model is presented which permits the prediction of the resonant frequencies created by antipodal finline waveguide to microstrip transitions. The transition is modeled as a tapered transmission line in series with an infinite set of coupled resonant circuits. The resonant circuits are modeled as simple microwave resonant cavities of which the resonant frequencies are easily determined. The model is developed and the resonant frequencies determined for several different transitions. Experimental results are given to confirm the models.

Monolithic microwave integrated circuit technology for advanced space communication

Future Space Communications subsystems will utilize GaAs Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMIC's) to reduce volume, weight, and cost and to enhance system reliability. Recent advances in GaAs MMIC technology have led to high-performance devices which show promise for insertion into these next generation systems. The status and development of a number of these devices operating from Ku through Ka band will be discussed along with anticipated potential applications.
