FFTF HT9 Cladding Microstructure Characterization

The sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is a promising candidate for next generation nuclear reactors, operating at extreme conditions which include high temperatures (>500?C core outlet temperature) and significant neutron damage. High-Cr martensitic HT9 steel is an excellent candidate for SFR cladding and duct material due to its compatibility with liquid sodium, good thermal conductivity, resistance to void swelling, and strong creep rupture strength [1-4].However, the harsh in-core environment of SFRs can cause complex microstructural changes and mechanical property degradation in HT-9. Ensuring the safe use of HT9 cladding for metallic fuel requires both a thorough understanding of its mechanical response to microstructure evolution as well as reliable microstructure-sensitive modeling predictions. Microstructure-sensitive modeling of high temperature creep behavior in HT9 cladding for SFR applications currently lack experimental data to model the phenomena accurately. To fill this need, methods to perform microstructural characterization have been developed and performed on HT9.

Advances in Metallic Fuel Database Development and Data Qualification

The Fuels Irradiation and Physics Database (FIPD [1]) is a comprehensive repository of data and documents related to Uranium-Zirconium based metallic fuel test pins. This database stores operational conditions of these pins, calculated using a suite of Argonne National Laboratory analysis codes developed during the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) program. Key calculated data include axial distributions of power, temperature, fluence, burnup, and isotopic densities. Additionally, the FIPD holds post-irradiation examination (PIE) data such as fission gas release, gas chemistry measurements, and axial distributions derived from profilometry, gamma scanning, and neutron radiography. Complementing these data is an extensive archive of documents related to various pins and experiments. These include raw PIE records, design details, safety analyses, and operational reports. More detail about FIPD can be found in ref. [2]. The database development is an ongoing effort covering metallic fuel experiments from the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) and the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF). The recent improvements to the database and the data QA status are summarized in this paper.

AFC Metallic Fuel Research and Development 5-Year Plan

The mission of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Fuel Campaign (AFC) program is conducting R&D on nuclear fuel technology that enables near- and long-term implementation of the reactor systems necessary to meet national nuclear energy objectives. Its primary goals align with goals of the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy in sustaining the current LWR fleet through Accident Tolerant Fuels program and Enabling Advanced Reactors. The latter goal is to be achieved through the following subgoals in order of logistical priority: • Establish the qualification basis for reference metallic fuel designs for sodium-cooled fast reactors. • Develop next generation metallic fuel fabrication and design for improved fissile utilization and management. • Develop accelerated fuel development and qualification methodologies. • Identify next generation fuel technologies. The purpose of this document is to serve as a five-year research and development (R&D) plan to achieve the goals identified to support enabling advanced reactor deployment related to metallic fuels starting in 2025. The specific objectives of this document are to: • align program R&D work across technical areas, national laboratories, and with stakeholder interests, and • aid yearly and outyear scope and budgetary planning activities. This plan lays the foundation of databases, capabilities, expertise, and research-commercial-regulatory integration for launching next-generation initiatives in advanced fuel technologies (fuel and cladding) and improved methodologies for achieving accelerated qualification of next generation fuel technologies.
