The Telecommunications and Data Acquisition Report

This quarterly publication (July-September 1987) provides archival reports on developments in programs managed by JPL's Office of Telecommunications and Data Acquisition (TDA). In space communications, radio navigation, radio science, and ground-based radio astronomy, it reports on activities of the Deep Space Network (DSN) and its associated Ground Communications Facility (GCF) in planning, in supporting research and technology, in implementation, and in operations. This work is performed for NASA's Office of Space Tracking and Data Systems (OSTDS). In geodynamics, the publication reports on the application of radio interferometry at microwave frequencies for geodynamic measurements. In the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), it reports on implementation and operations for searching the microwave spectrum. The latter two programs are performed for NASA's Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA).

Communicating from the edge of the solar system

Communication technology for deep-space scientific missions is surveyed, with a focus on systems being developed for Galileo, a NASA orbiter/probe mission to Jupiter. The problems faced in designing the links from the probe (descending into the Jovian atmosphere) to the orbiter and from the orbiter to earth are examined; the technological solutions adopted for Galileo are discussed; the expansion of the Deep Space Network for the mission is described; the advantages and limitations of cm-band communication systems being considered to meet the data-rate requirements of future deep-space missions are outlined; and the potential of optical communication for the 21st century is indicated. Also included are tables listing past and planned deep-space missions and a brief description of the use of spacecraft radio signals by radio and planetary scientists to probe solar-system plasmas and gravitational fields.

Optimum Cyclic Redundancy Codes for Noisy Channels

Capabilities and limitations of cyclic redundancy codes (CRC's) for detecting transmission errors in data sent over relatively noisy channels (e.g., voice-grade telephone lines or very-high-density storage media) discussed in 16-page report. Due to prevalent use of bytes in multiples of 8 bits data transmission, report primarily concerned with cases in which both block length and number of redundant bits (check bits for use in error detection) included in each block are multiples of 8 bits.

Configurations for file transfer protocol error protection

This note considers codes for computer file transfer protocols when only upper-case ASCII characters are used as control characters. Such a restriction may be necessary to avoid dependence on unique machine features and to promote portability. If ten control functions are needed, a number used in a typical sufficiently rich protocol, we seek a subset of ten upper-case ASCII characters with good distance properties. The control functions form themselves naturally into three groups. Recognizing that only even distances can occur, the need to make the intragroup minimum distances as large as possible, and the number of control characters have distance 2 as small as possible is emphasized. The optimum solution to the above problem is found as well as an assignment that attains the optimum. The codes are essentially unique.

A note on the wideband Gaussian broadcast channel

It is well known that for the Gaussian broadcast channel, timeshared coding is not as efficient as more sophisticated broadcast coding strategies. However, the relative advantage of broadcast coding over timeshared coding is shown to be small if the signal-to-noise ratios of both receivers are small. One surprising consequence of this is that for the wideband Gaussian broadcast channel, which is defined, broadcast coding offers no advantage over timeshared coding at all, and so timeshared coding is optimal.

Error and erasure probabilities for Galileo uplink code

The Galileo uplink Frame Erasure probability and Undetected Frame Error probability are derived. The performance meets desired specification under normal operations. The Galileo command system will work well even in an emergency condition, where the bit error rate into the command decoder is 1.00 X 0.001 (although Galileo's command threshold error rate is 1.00 X 0.00001).

The number of stable points of an infinite-range spin glass memory

A rigorous asymptotic expression for the number of stable points of an infinite-range spin glass with independently identically distributed (i.i.d) zero-mean gaussian exchange interactions is discussed. The result also applies tot he number of stable points of a Hopfield Memory (a kind of associative memory) when the memory connections are i.i.d. zero-mean gaussians. The result is that the number of stable points is asymptotic to a constant slightly larger than 1 times 2 to a power slightly larger thann/4, where n is the number of spins in the glass, or the length of the n-tuples to be remembered by the memory. The answer is easily derived using simple asymptotic techniques from an exact expression for the probability that an arbitrary plus or minus 1 n-tuple of spins is a fixed point. This expression is obtained from the fact that any distribution of joint zero-mean gaussians of given covariances is specified solely by these covariances. This is a far shorter derivation of the result than those existing.
