Prospects for very deep space optical communication using photon-counting links

An investigation is conducted regarding the feasibility to use an optical communication system in connection with space missions involving a study of stars and, possibly, planetary systems in the vicinity of the solar system. A possible candidate for the considered kind of mission would be Barnard's Star, at six light years distance. Pierce et al. (1981), have shown that the capacity of a photon-counting link in the presence of thermal noise at low temperature is essentially the same as for microwave. The conducted investigation assumes the employment of a pulse position modulation scheme limited by technology to approximately 1,000,000 positions. The use of an optical communication system similar to the considered type is found to be very likely for the contemplated kind of space mission.

Life cycle costing with a discount rate

This article studies life cycle costing for a capability needed for the indefinite future, and specifically investigates the dependence of optimal policies on the discount rate chosen. The two costs considered are reprocurement cost and maintenance and operations (M and O) cost. The procurement price is assumed known, and the M and O costs are assumed to be a known function, in fact, a non-decreasing function, of the time since last reprocurement. The problem is to choose the optimum reprocurement time so as to minimize the quotient of the total cost over a reprocurement period divided by the period. Or one could assume a discount rate and try to minimize the total discounted costs into the indefinite future. It is shown that the optimum policy in the presence of a small discount rate hardly depends on the discount rate at all, and leads to essentially the same policy as in the case in which discounting is not considered.

Multiple-access channels without synchronization

This paper discusses models for multiple-access communications which take into account the fact that the channel users may not be able to synchronize their transmissions. It is shown that for a broad class of such channels, the capacity region is the same as it would be with user synchronization. Some open problems are discussed.

A technique for generating correlated X-band weather degradation statistics

It is, known that the X-band noise temperature of DSN receivers can go up from 20 K to over 100 K or more, if the air is heavily laden with water vapor, although that is an uncommon occurrence. It is proposed that the DSN furnish flight projects relying on X-band degradation models, one for each DSN Complex. Such models would be in the form of a random process generator, say in an MBASIC program, that would permit the project to generate X-band degradation data with the right autocorrelations for periods of interest to the Projects. The autocorrelation modeling is especially important because bursts of degradation lasting several days can affect data storage and mission sequence design strategy. One approach which works if the degradation statistics obey a half-gaussian law. That is, the random variables are formed by taking the absolute values of another set of random variables, themselves having a Gaussian distribution. The technique then permits the half-gaussian random variables to have given one and two-step correlation coefficients.

Behavior of queues at signalized intersections in heavy traffic

This paper derives the asymptotic behavior of traffic queues at signalized intersections when the excess of departure capacity over arrivals approaches zero from above. The most interesting result is that the distribution of queue length approaches a negative exponential, with fewer restrictive assumptions than hitherto known. The main improvement results from more precise use of a combinatorial lemma of Spitzer, giving the maximum of the partial sums of a sequence of independent identically distributed random variables, plus some specific constructive probability calculations, many of them involving the Fourier transform. New results are presented on the probability that the queue be below a fixed bound and/or on the probability that the queue be empty. Applications to on-line estimators for real-time traffic control are suggested.

Random coding strategies for minimum entropy

This paper proves that there exists a fixed random coding strategy for block coding a memoryless information source to achieve the absolute epsilon entropy of the source. That is, the strategy can be chosen independent of the block length. The principal new tool is an easy result on the semicontinuity of the relative entropy functional of one probability distribution with respect to another. The theorem generalizes a result from rate-distortion theory to the 'zero-infinity' case.

Method and apparatus for a single channel digital communications system

A method and apparatus are described for synchronizing a received PCM communications signal without requiring a separate synchronizing channel. The technique provides digital correlation of the received signal with a reference signal, first with its unmodulated subcarrier and then with a bit sync code modulated subcarrier, where the code sequence length is equal in duration to each data bit.

Single-channel digital command-detection system

System, fabricated of highly-reliable digital logic elements, operates on binary pulse-code-modulated signals and derives internal synchronization from data signal. All-digital implementation of detector develops synchronization from data signal by computer cross-correlation of command modulation signal with its expected forms in sequence and adjusts detector phases in accordance with correlation peaks.

Rate distortion from planet to paper.

The overall data link commences with the lens of the spacecraft camera, followed by the telemetry format, and then the passing of the data onto a spacecraft tape recorder for later transmission at a slower rate. The properties of the individual pieces of information are described, and rate distortion theory is discussed. The video channel from the standpoint of information theory, and fidelity criteria for planetary video are considered. Areas for further research are indicated.
