Microwave Power Combiner With Switching Diodes

In multiple-port microwave power combiner, each of outputs of two or more power amplifiers of same frequency and phase passed to common output port separately or together. Each amplifier connected to combiner through switch consisting of resonant structures, radio-frequency chokes, and diode. Switches not only permit flexiblity in selection of amplifiers but isolate unused amplifiers from network, all while operating at relatively low power loss.

Total Hip Joint Replacement Biotelemetry System

The development of a biotelemetry system that is hermetically sealed within a total hip replacement implant is reported. The telemetry system transmits six channels of stress data to reconstruct the major forces acting on the neck of the prosthesis and uses an induction power coupling technique to eliminate the need for internal batteries. The activities associated with the telemetry microminiaturization, data recovery console, hardware fabrications, power induction systems, electrical and mechanical testing and hermetic sealing test results are discussed.

High-power solid-state microwave transmitter

Transmitter phases outputs from individual amplifier modules then combines them in multielement array feed antenna. Size and power capability of system are variable for radar and small-angle scanning applications.

Evaluation of the JPL X-band 32 element active array

Tests performed on an X-band 32-element active array are described. Antenna pattern characteristics of the array were tested in its standard operating mode as well as several degraded performance modes, including failures of 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 16, and 31 elements. Additionally, the array was characterized with the addition of a metallic shroud, and also characterized versus rf drive level and at a single off-axis electronic beamsteered position. Characterization was performed on several of the 3/4-watt, three-stage, X-band solid-state power amplifier modules. The characterization included swept amplitude response, amplitude and phase versus temperature from -20 to +60 C, and intermodulation distortion of selected modules. The array is described and conclusions and recommendations based upon the experience and results achieved are included.

Mercury - Results on mass, radius, ionosphere, and atmosphere from Mariner 10 dual-frequency radio signals

Analysis of the radio-tracking data from Mariner 10 yields 6,023,600 plus or minus 600 for the ratio of the mass of the sun to that of Mercury, in very good agreement with values determined earlier from radar data alone. Occultation measurements yielded values for the radius of Mercury of 2440 plus or minus 2 and 2438 plus or minus 2 kilometers at latitudes of 2 N and 68 N, respectively, again in close agreement with the average equatorial radius of 2439 plus or minus 1 kilometers determined from radar data. The mean density of 5.44 grams per cubic centimeter deduced for Mercury from Mariner 10 data thus virtually coincides with the prior determination. No evidence of either an ionosphere or an atmosphere was found.

Venus - Mass, gravity field, atmosphere, and ionosphere as measured by the Mariner 10 dual-frequency radio system

The unique properties of the Mariner 10 radio system, and the preliminary scientific results obtained from the analysis of the radio signals are described. In the normal two-way communication mode, a command- and range-modulated 2115-MHz signal is transmitted to the spacecraft for reception on its omnidirectional antenna. As implemented for Mariner 10, the dual-frequency system has proven fully capable of performing interplanetary columnar electron content measurements while achieving the prime goals of the celestial mechanics and radio science team. The determination of the mass and gravitational potential of Venus is one of the major objectives of the radio science experiments. Information on Venus's atmosphere was deduced from analysis of the radio signals during occultation. Open-loop receiver differential Doppler data were used to measure the nightside and dayside ionospheres of Venus.
