Indirect reactions and connection with R-matrix theory

It is often the case that nuclear reactions that are important for societal applications or basic science are difficult to measure directly in existing facilities for accelerated beams. The difficulty might be associated with an exceedingly small cross section, as the ones obtained at beam energies well below the Coulomb barrier, or with the impossibility of devising a short-lived target, as is the case for neutron-induced reactions on unstable isotopes. The fruitful line of experimental research addressing this issue with alternative (indirect) reactions has been developed in parallel to the theory needed to make the connection between the observed data and the desired cross sections of the (direct) reaction under study. Within this context, we present here an explicit connection between the indirect cross section and the R-matrix parameters which describe the energy-dependent cross section of the desired direct reaction.

Effects Of Coupled States On The n+ 239 Pu Total Cross Section

The purpose of this report is to document the effects of including excited states of 239 Pu in the calculation of transmission coefficients that will serve as inputs to Hauser-Feshbach calculations of neutron-induced reactions.

Microscopic calculation of fission product yields for odd-mass nuclei

Fission data are essential inputs to reaction networks involved in nucleosynthesis simulations and nuclear forensics. In such applications as well as in the description of multichance fission, the characteristics of fission for odd-mass nuclei are just as important as those for even-even nuclei. The fission theories that aim at explicitly describing fission dynamics are typically based on some variant of the nuclear mean-field theory. In such cases, the treatment of systems with an odd number of particles is markedly more involved, both formally and computationally. In this article, we use the blocking prescription of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Skyrme energy functionals to compute the deformation properties of odd-mass uranium isotopes. We show that the resulting fission fragment distributions depend quite significantly on the spin of the odd neutron. By direct calculation of the spin distribution of the fissioning nucleus, we propose a methodology to rigorously predict the charge and mass distributions in odd-mass nuclei.
