Novel Cascaded Ring Oscillator Vernier based TDC Architecture with a Feedthrough Reference Oscillator

Time to digital converters (TDCs) are widely used in particle physics and medical imaging to determine the relative arrival time of photons and other particles. Vernier TDCs are one of the most attractive options due to their power consumption efficiency and their small footprint. We present our newly patented innovative architecture of cascaded-stage Vernier TDCs comprised of a feedthrough reference oscillator. This architecture lead to successive Vernier measurements that result in a lower number of cycles for the same dynamic range to resolution ratio (DRRR), leading to reduced conversion time and lower jitter. To validate this architecture, a test chip was designed in 0.18~μm TSMC technology, integrating four types of cascaded Vernier TDCs with an increasing number of stages. The performance of the chip was assessed using a modular test platform specifically designed for TDCs. For comparison purposes, all TDCs were tested with a LSB of 50~ps and a dynamic range of 20~ns. The experimental results demonstrate the highest gain in performance between 1 stage Vernier and 2 stage Vernier TDCs with the precision improved from 36~ps~rms to 21~ps~rms, the maximum number of turns from 110 to 25 counts and the dead time, from 266.4~ns to 76.5~ns, on average. Adding Vernier stages is only relevant for a higher DRRR. Therefore, the 3-stage and 4-stage Vernier TDCs also show performance gains, but improvements are limited.

Fast neutron radiography-based on single-photon digital photosensor: concept and demonstration

For decades, fast neutron radiography performed using pulse-counting detectors employed PMTs coupled to plastic scintillator pixel arrays. SiPM-based systems are now sought to replace fragile PMTs, but conventional, “analog” SiPMs suffer from intrinsic limitations which limit their achievable performance. Among these limitations, a complete analog readout and digitizer chain is required, a counterintuitive approach when considering that the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), the basic unit cell of SiPMs, is a Boolean detector providing digital detection at the sensor level. This paper outlines a new concept for neutron radiography instrumentation by using photon-to-digital converters (PDCs, aka digital SiPMs), a fully digital solution to sense the scintillation light.

PET Imaging of Leg Arteries for Determining the Input Function in PET/MRI Brain Studies Using a Compact, MRI-Compatible PET System

In this work, we used a compact, high-resolution, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-compatible positron emission tomography (PET) camera (VersaPET) to assess the feasibility of measuring the image-derived input function (IDIF) from arteries in the leg with the ultimate goal of enabling fully quantitative PET brain imaging without blood sampling. We used this approach in five 18 F-FDG PET/MRI brain studies in which the input function was also acquired using the gold standard of serial arterial blood sampling. After accounting for partial volume, dispersion, and calibration effects, we compared the metabolic rates of glucose (MRglu) quantified from VersaPET IDIFs in 80 brain regions to those using the gold standard and achieved a bias and variability of <5% which is within the range of reported test-retest values for this type of study. We also achieved a strong linear relationship (R 2 >0.97) against the gold standard across regions. The results of this preliminary study are promising and support further studies to optimize methods, validate in a larger cohort, and extend to the modeling of other radiotracers.
