Tomography by iterative convolution - Empirical study and application to interferometry

An algorithm for computer tomography has been developed that is applicable to reconstruction from data having incomplete projections because an opaque object blocks some of the probing radiation as it passes through the object field. The algorithm is based on iteration between the object domain and the projection (Radon transform) domain. Reconstructions are computed during each iteration by the well-known convolution method. Although it is demonstrated that this algorithm does not converge, an empirically justified criterion for terminating the iteration when the most accurate estimate has been computed is presented. The algorithm has been studied by using it to reconstruct several different object fields with several different opaque regions. It also has been used to reconstruct aerodynamic density fields from interferometric data recorded in wind tunnel tests.

Analytical description of an imperfect Fabry-Perot etalon

A novel method is presented for the investigation of Fabry-Perot etalon defects, incorporating the effects of microsurface imperfection, bowing, and departure from parallelism, as well as the effect of finite aperture on the etalon, into the perturbation function. The tolerance imperfections of reflective layers can be incorporated into the transfer coefficients of a noncorrugated thin-film system, and any defect can be investigated either separately or in combination with others through the use of the appropriate analytical or numerical simulation of the corrugated function. In the context of numerical computation, the present method permits the simulation and evaluation of different specific situations. The expressions derived for the transfer coefficients of a corrugated, equidistant thin film system may be applicable to other branches of applied optics.

Computer tomography of flows external to test models

Computer tomographic techniques for reconstruction of three-dimensional aerodynamic density fields, from interferograms recorded from several different viewing directions were studied. Emphasis is on the case in which an opaque object such as a test model in a wind tunnel obscures significant regions of the interferograms (projection data). A method called the Iterative Convolution Method (ICM), existing methods in which the field is represented by a series expansions, and analysis of real experimental data in the form of aerodynamic interferograms are discussed.

Holographic interferometry of transparent media using light scattered by embedded test objects

Fringe formation and localization in holographic interferometry of transparent media are discussed for configurations in which light enters the medium and is scattered back through it by an embedded diffuse object. Fringe order numbers are doubled, and the fringe localization region is translated and compressed by a factor of two. The results are applicable to tomographic reconstruction of aerodynamic density fields around opaque test objects.

Holographic interferometry of transparent media with reflection from imbedded test objects

In applying holographic interferometry, opaque objects blocking a portion of the optical beam used to form the interferogram give rise to incomplete data for standard computer tomography algorithms. An experimental technique for circumventing the problem of data blocked by opaque objects is presented. The missing data are completed by forming an interferogram using light backscattered from the opaque object, which is assumed to be diffuse. The problem of fringe localization is considered.
