Cardiovascular Imaging and Image Processing: Theory and Practice - 1975

Ultrasonography was examined in regard to the developmental highlights and present applicatons of cardiac ultrasound. Doppler ultrasonic techniques and the technology of miniature acoustic element arrays were reported. X-ray angiography was discussed with special considerations on quantitative three dimensional dynamic imaging of structure and function of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems in all regions of the body. Nuclear cardiography and scintigraphy, three--dimensional imaging of the myocardium with isotopes, and the commercialization of the echocardioscope were studied.

Some Research on the Lift and Stability of Wing-Body Combinations

The present paper summarizes and correlates broadly some of the research results applicable to fin-stabilized ammunition. The discussion and correlation are intended to be comprehensive, rather than detailed, in order to show general trends over the Mach number range up to 7.0. Some discussion of wings, bodies, and wing-body interference is presented, and a list of 179 papers containing further information is included. The present paper is intended to serve more as a bibliography and source of reference material than as a direct source of design information.

Rocket-Model Measurements of Zero-Lift Damping in Roll of the Bell MX-776 Missile at Mach Numbers from 0.6 to 1.56

The zero-lift damping in roll of the Bell MX-776 missile has been measured by a sting-mounted rocket-model technique at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.56. The damping-in-roll data, in general, show no unusual variation with Mach number. Aileron rolling-moment effectiveness derived from these data and previously obtained rolling-effectiveness data appear reasonable,

Flight Tests of Rocket-Powered "Tin-Can" Models of AAF Project MX-800

Flight tests were made of six noninstrumented rocket-powered "Tin Can" models of AAF Project MX-800. Velocity and drag data were obtained by use of CU Doppler radar. The existence of stability and adequate structural strength for flight near zero lift was checked by visual and photographic observation. Drag data obtained during the tests agreed reasonably well with estimates based on experimental data from NACA RM-2 rocket-powered drag research models.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Effects of Unsymmetrical Horizontal-Tail Arrangements on Power-on Static Longitudinal Stability of a Single-Engine Airplane Model

A wind-tunnel investigation has been made to determine the effects of unsymmetrical horizontal-tail arrangements on the power-on static longitudinal stability of a single-engine single-rotation airplane model. Although the tests and analyses showed that extreme asymmetry in the horizontal tail indicated a reduction in power effects on longitudinal stability for single-engine single-rotation airplanes, the particular "practical" arrangement tested did not show marked improvement. Differences in average downwash between the normal tail arrangement and various other tail arrangements estimated from computed values of propeller-slipstream rotation agreed with values estimated from pitching-moment test data for the flaps-up condition (low thrust and torque) and disagreed for the flaps-down condition (high thrust and torque). This disagreement indicated the necessity for continued research to determine the characteristics of the slip-stream behind various propeller-fuselage-wing combinations. Out-of-trim lateral forces and moments of the unsymmetrical tail arrangements that were best from consideration of longitudinal stability were no greater than those of the normal tail arrangement.

Comparison of Pitching Moments Produced by Plain Flaps and by Spoilers and Some Aerodynamic Characteristics of an NACA 23012 Airfoil with Various Types of Aileron

Sectional characteristics of airfoil having retractable slotted flap with plain, slot-lip, or retractable ailerons are presented for a large range of aileron deflections. The analysis indicated that pitching moments produced by spoilers were less positive than those produced by plain flaps of equal effectiveness, also that pitching moments created by the spoiler increased less with the Mach number than similar moments produced by plain flaps. Positive values of pitching moment decreased as devices were located nearer airfoil leading edge.

Preliminary Correlation of the Effects of Beveled Trailing Edges on the Hinge-Moment Characteristics of Control Surfaces

A study of available data from various tests of beveled control surfaces has been made in an attempt to develop a rational method for predicting the effects of beveled trailing edges on the hinge-moment characteristics of control surfaces in both two- and three-dimensional flow. The results of the study indicated that the change in the included angle at the control-surface trailing edge formed a convenient basis on which a correlation could be made of the effects of various profile modifications on hinge-moment characteristics. It is believed that the formulas developed will allow reasonably accurate predictions of the hinge-moment characteristics of sealed beveled control surfaces if the characteristics of the original control surfaces are known. The presence of a gap at the control-surface hinge increased the effect of beveled trailing edges on the hinge-moment characteristics at small control-surface deflections but the available data were insufficient to allow as complete a correlation as was possible for sealed controls.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of a Plain Aileron with Various Trailing-Edge Modifications on a Tapered Wing III : Ailerons with Simple and Spring-Linked Balancing Tabs

Aerodynamics data are obtained for the design of linked balancing tabs and effect of varied tab span and location to produce suitable lateral control characteristics with reasonable stick pressures for high-speed aircraft. Simple and spring-linked balancing tabs may considerably reduce control pressures if aileron system is designed for low maximum aileron deflection. Spring-linked tabs also decrease variation of stick pressure with speed and impart better controlllability at low speeds.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Perforated Split Flaps for Use as Dive Brakes on a Tapered NACA 23012 Airfoil

Aerodynamic characteristics of a tapered NACA 23012 airfoil with single and double perforated split flaps have been determined in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel. Dynamic pressure surveys were made behind the airfoil at the approximate location of the tail in order to determine the extent and location of the wake for several of the flap arrangements. In addition, computations have been made of an application of perforated double split flaps for use as fighter brakes. The results indicated that single or double perforated split flaps may be used to obtain satisfactory dive control without undue buffeting effects and that single or double perforated split flaps may also be used as fighter brakes. The perforated split flaps had approximately the same effects on the aerodynamic and wake characteristics of the tapered airfoil as on a comparable rectangular airfoil.
