Spectroscopic evidence of spin-state excitation in d-electron correlated semiconductor FeSb 2

Iron antimonide (FeSb 2 ) has been investigated for decades due to its puzzling electronic properties. It undergoes the temperature-controlled transition from an insulator to an ill-defined metal, with a cross-over from diamagnetism to paramagnetism. Extensive efforts have been made to uncover the underlying mechanism, but a consensus has yet to be reached. While macroscopic transport and magnetic measurements can be explained by different theoretical proposals, the essential spectroscopic evidence required to distinguish the physical origin is missing. In this paper, through the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomic multiplet simulations, we have observed the mixed spin states of 3d 6 configuration in FeSb 2 . Furthermore, we reveal that the enhancement of the conductivity, whether induced by temperature or doping, is characterized by populating the high-spin state from the low-spin state. Our work constitutes vital spectroscopic evidence that the electrical/magnetical transition in FeSb 2 is directly associated with the spin-state excitation.

Processing aluminum alloy with hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing and ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification to improve porosity, surface finish, and hardness

Here, in this paper, a novel hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) on porosity manipulation and surface properties of aluminum 5356 alloys was studied. The goal is to improve the quality of the WAAM-built part by eliminating bigger pores and reducing its size, reducing surface roughness, and increasing surface hardness. The as-built WAAM and WAAM-UNSM-treated samples were quantitatively studied for porosity using an X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). The surface roughness was measured on the surface profile of the same samples before and after UNSM treatment. Followed by the Vickers micro-hardness tests to evaluate the hardness modified by the influence of the UNSM treatment. It was found that the bigger pores in the as-built WAAM samples were eliminated and the medium-sized pores were shrunk to almost half the size after the UNSM treatment. Further, the UNSM treatment showed a significant improvement in both surface roughness and hardness on the WAAM Al5356 samples. This experimental work demonstrates the critical advantages of hybrid WAAM-UNSM in improving the qualities of the WAAM processed parts.

Robust Fe divalent state in one-unit-cell $\mathrm{FeSe/SrTiO_3}$ thin films

The orbital occupancy, as the origin of Hund's rule coupling, provides critical information in understanding the multiorbital iron-based superconductors. The one-unit-cell (1UC) FeSe thin film on a SrTiO 3 substrate with superconductive T c above 60 K has been reported with unique electronic structures as well as orbital occupancy. In this paper, we present the x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the FeSe/STO thin films of different thicknesses. Together with the atomic multiplet simulation analysis, the FeSe/STO thin films (from 1UC to 10UC) are shown with the pure 3d6 electronic configuration which is identical to the bulk FeSe. Moreover, 1UC FeSe/STO is found to be distinctively more persistent in hosting the 3d6 configuration other than the thicker films under the oxidization process. The robustness of the 3d6 in 1UC FeSe/STO is discussed as a result of charge transfer from the substrate, as well as a mechanism to maintain the high-T c superconductivity. Additionally our research calls for a further high-resolution RIXS study of the pristine superconductive 1UC FeSe/STO thin film.

Light-induced dimension crossover dictated by excitonic correlations

In low-dimensional systems with strong electronic correlations, the application of an ultrashort laser pulse often yields novel phases that are otherwise inaccessible. The central challenge in understanding such phenomena is to determine how dimensionality and many-body correlations together govern the pathway of a non-adiabatic transition. To this end, we examine a layered compound, 1T-TiSe 2 , whose three-dimensional charge-density-wave (3D CDW) state also features exciton condensation due to strong electron-hole interactions. We find that photoexcitation suppresses the equilibrium 3D CDW while creating a nonequilibrium 2D CDW. Remarkably, the dimension reduction does not occur unless bound electron-hole pairs are broken. This relation suggests that excitonic correlations maintain the out-of-plane CDW coherence, settling a long-standing debate over their role in the CDW transition. Our findings demonstrate how optical manipulation of electronic interaction enables one to control the dimensionality of a broken-symmetry order, paving the way for realizing other emergent states in strongly correlated systems.

Anisotropic surface state in a topological semimetal candidate Ta 3 SiTe 6

Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the surface state of Ta 3 SiTe 6 , a candidate of topological semimetal protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry. Through photon-energy dependent measurements, the surface state near the Fermi level was detected. By determining the band dispersions, we found that the surface state is topological trivial. Around the surface Brillouin zone center, the surface bands disperse linear-like, forming a band crossing (zero energy gap) point at about 0.2 eV below the Fermi level. In Ta 3 SiTe 6 's rectangular surface Brillouin zone, the surface bands only cross the Fermi level along one axis, forming two hole-like Fermi pockets near surface Brillouin zone boundaries. Although the observed surface state is not topological, we proposed that its anisotropic Fermi surface topography could be potentially useful for future applications.

Metamaterial-like aerogels for broadband vibration mitigation

We present metamaterial-like aerogels that provide broadband low-frequency vibration mitigation through their self-assembled locally resonant microstructures. Simulations confirm the presence of a negative dynamic stiffness for the aerogels.

Fermi-crossing Type-II Dirac fermions and topological surface states in NiTe 2

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer an ideal platform to experimentally realize Dirac fermions. However, typically these exotic quasiparticles are located far away from the Fermi level, limiting the contribution of Dirac-like carriers to the transport properties. Here we show that NiTe 2 hosts both bulk Type-II Dirac points and topological surface states. The underlying mechanism is shared with other TMDs and based on the generic topological character of the Te p-orbital manifold. However, unique to NiTe 2 , a significant contribution of Ni d orbital states shifts the energy of the Type-II Dirac point close to the Fermi level. In addition, one of the topological surface states intersects the Fermi energy and exhibits a remarkably large spin splitting of 120 meV. Our results establish NiTe 2 as an exciting candidate for next-generation spintronics devices.
