Optimal placement of critical speeds in rotor-bearing systems

The design of a rotor-bearing system is an iterative process in which the parameters that influence the design are modified until the desired design objectives are achieved. Primary among the design objectives is the minimization of the response amplitude within the operating range of the rotor system. An automated design procedure for the optimal placement of the critical speeds of a rotor is presented. The desired design objective is cast as a nonlinear programming problem that minimizes an objective function subject to constraints. The optimization program interacts with an analysis program to search for the feasible optimal design.

Parameter sensitivity in the dynamics of rotor-bearing systems

When designing a rotor system it is frequently desirable to have at hand a set of design sensitivity coefficients which quantitatively predict a change in specific system characteristics to changes in design parameters. This paper presents eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients for the damped natural frequencies of whirl of general linear rotor system modelled by finite element discretization. In addition, a simple and direct method for calculation of the damped critical speeds is presented, which utilizes the eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to the spin speed. It is shown that the combination of design parameter and spin speed whirl frequency sensitivity coefficients may be used to also evaluate the damped critical speed sensitivity coefficients.

Sequential triangulation of orbital photography

The feasibility of structuring the satellite photogrammetric triangulation as an iterative Extended Kalman estimation algorithm is demonstrated. Comparative numerical results of the sequential against batch estimation algorithm are presented. Difficulty of accurately modeling of the attitude motion is overcome by utilizing the on-board angular rate measurements. Solutions of the differential equations and the evaluation of state transition matrix are carried out numerically.

The dynamics and optimal control of spinning spacecraft and movable telescoping appendages, part B: Effect of gravity-gradient torques on the dynamics of a spinning spacecraft with telescoping appendages

The effects of gravity gradient torques during boom deployment maneuvers of a spinning spacecraft are examined. Configurations where the booms extended only along the hub principal axes and where one or two booms are offset from the principal axes were considered. For the special case of symmetric deployment (principal axes booms) the stability boundaries are determined, and a stability chart is used to study the system behavior. Possible cases of instability during this type of maneuver are identified. In the second configuration an expression for gravity torque about the hub center of mass was developed. The nonlinear equations of motion are solved numerically, and the substantial influence of the gravity torque during asymmetric deployment maneuvers is indicated.

Effect of gravity-gradient torques on the dynamics of a spinning spacecraft with telescoping appendages

The effects of gravity-gradient torques during boom deployment maneuvers of a spinning spacecraft are examined with a combination of numerical and analytical methods. It is assumed that the spacecraft consists of a rigid central hub and movable rigid telescoping booms where the booms extend only along the hub principal axes. For the special case of symmetric deployment the stability boundaries are determined and a stability chart is used to study the system behavior. Possible cases of instability during this type of maneuver are identified.
