Sterile-neutrino search based on 259 days of KATRIN data

Neutrinos are the most abundant fundamental matter particles in the Universe and play a crucial part in particle physics and cosmology. Neutrino oscillation, discovered about 25 years ago, shows that the three known species mix with each other. Anomalous results from reactor and radioactive-source experiments suggest a possible fourth neutrino state, the sterile neutrino, which does not interact through the weak force. The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, primarily designed to measure the neutrino mass using tritium β-decay, also searches for sterile neutrinos suggested by these anomalies. A sterile-neutrino signal would appear as a distortion in the β-decay energy spectrum, characterized by a discontinuity in curvature (kink) related to the sterile-neutrino mass. This signature, which depends only on the shape of the spectrum rather than its absolute normalization, offers a robust, complementary approach to reactor experiments. Here we report the analysis of the energy spectrum of 36 million tritium β-decay electrons recorded in 259 measurement days within the last 40 eV below the endpoint. The results exclude a substantial part of the parameter space suggested by the gallium anomaly and challenge the Neutrino-4 claim. Together with other neutrino-disappearance experiments, KATRIN probes sterile-to-active mass splittings from a fraction of an eV 2 to several hundred eV 2 , excluding light sterile neutrinos with mixing angles above a few per cent.

Measurement of the electric potential and the magnetic field in the shifted analysing plane of the KATRIN experiment

The projected sensitivity of the effective electron neutrino-mass measurement with the KATRIN experiment is below 0.3 eV (90 % CL) after 5 years of data acquisition. The sensitivity is affected by the increased rate of the background electrons from KATRIN’s main spectrometer. A special shifted-analysing-plane (SAP) configuration was developed to reduce this background by a factor of two. The complex layout of electromagnetic fields in the SAP configuration requires a robust method of estimating these fields. We present in this paper a dedicated calibration measurement of the fields using conversion electrons of gaseous 83m Kr, which enables the neutrino-mass measurements in the SAP configuration.

Classification of Aerosol Retrievals from Spaceborne Polarimetry Using a Multiparameter Algorithm

In this presentation, we demonstrate application of a new aerosol classification algorithm to retrievals from the POLDER-3 polarimter on the PARASOL spacecraft. Motivation and method: Since the development of global aerosol measurements by satellites and AERONET, classification of observed aerosols into several types (e.g., urban-industrial, biomass burning, mineral dust, maritime, and various subtypes or mixtures of these) has proven useful to: understanding aerosol sources, transformations, effects, and feedback mechanisms; improving accuracy of satellite retrievals and quantifying assessments of aerosol radiative impacts on climate.

The natural frequencies of symmetric angle-ply laminates derived from eigensensitivity analysis

In this paper, a new closed-form approximate solution for the natural frequencies of symmetric rectangular angle-ply laminates simply supported on all four edges is derived. The solution, obtained from eigensensitivity analysis, is expressed as a truncated Fourier series in the ply angle. Results show that the prediction for the fundamental frequency is quite accurate for engineering applications, often within 1-2 percent of the true frequency.

Optimization of space structures

Computational methods for the design of structures for specified transient response, truss beam units with specified attached vibration absorbers, and laminates for structural components of large space structures are examined. Equations for the measurement of structural stiffness that are maximized for a specific total mass and that will reduce the structural weight are presented. A model for a cantilevered space truss beam of a specific mass and with a specified tip vibration absorber is explained. Design criteria of the laminates include minimizing the weight as well as frequency, buckling, and global stiffness constraints. Other variables include orientation of the lamina and the thickness of each layer.

Flight test design for efficient extraction of aircraft parameters

This paper considers the design of flight control inputs which result in a minimization of the nonuniqueness problem of parameter identification due to statistical correlation. The performance index for the control design is taken as a linear weighted sum of the squares of the correlation coefficients of the aerodynamic stability and control derivatives as computed from the Cramer-Rao lower bound matrix. An optimal input design is demonstrated for an F-8 aircraft with supercritical wing. Reduced correlations are noted and corresponding estimates and confidence levels presented.

Vacuum considerations in the design of a space simulator

Vacuum considerations in the techniques for design, fabrication, and testing of space simulators are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to a diffusion pump-rotary pump combination for the vacuum system.

Estimation of nonlinear aerodynamic derivatives of a variable geometry fighter aircraft from flight data

This paper is concerned with the estimation of stability and control parameters of a high performance fighter aircraft from data obtained from high angle of attack flight. The estimation process utilizes a maximum likelihood algorithm derived for the case of a nonlinear aerodynamic force and moment model. The aircraft used was a high speed variable sweep heavy weight fighter with twin vertical tails. Comparisons of results from the nonlinear analysis are made with linear theory and wind tunnel results when available.
