Defect-induced formation and frustration-driven multiple magnetic transitions in Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90

A new ternary compound, Gd 2 Co 0.90 Si 2.90 , has been synthesized in a chemically single phase by deliberately introducing lattice vacancies in the Co and Si sites. The system is characterized by DC magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Here, a detailed experimental study reveals that the system exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition below T N = 11.3 K followed by spin freezing behaviour below T B ~ 4.8 K. An additional high-temperature magnetic transition could also be detected at T H ~ 150 K, which is short range in character and is associated with defect-induced polarization of the conduction electrons. The spin-glass-like state formation in the system is additionally bolstered by the observation of magnetic relaxation and associated aging phenomena as well as the magnetic memory effect. On the basis of non-equilibrium dynamical behaviour, we argue that the glassy state in this compound favours the hierarchical model over the droplet model. DFT calculations and experimental outcomes establish that the ground state is magnetically frustrated due to the small energy difference between distinct spin configurations having closely spaced ground-state energies.

Magnetic frustration driven by conduction carrier blocking in Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88

The intermetallic compound Nd 2 Co 0.85 Si 2.88 having a triangular lattice could be synthesized in single phase only with defect crystal structure. Investigation through different experimental techniques indicate the presence of two magnetic transitions in the system. As verified experimentally and theoretically, the high-temperature transition $T_H$ ~ 140 K is associated with the development of ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, whereas the low-temperature transition at $T_L$ ~ 6.5 K is due to the coupling among Nd–4$\textit{f}$ and Co–3$\textit{d}$ moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed studies of temperature-dependent dc magnetic susceptibility, field dependence of isothermal magnetization, nonequilibrium dynamical behavior, viz., magnetic relaxation, aging effect, magnetic-memory effect, and temperature dependence of heat capacity, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, suggest that the ground state is magnetically frustrated spin glass in nature, having competing magnetic interactions of equivalent energies. DFT results further reveal that the 3$\textit{d}$/5$\textit{d}$-conduction carriers are blocked in the system and act as a barrier for the 4$\textit{f}$–4$\textit{f}$ RKKY interactions, resulting in spin frustration. Presence of vacancy defects in the crystal are also conducive to the spin frustration. This is an unique mechanism of magnetic frustration, not emphasized so far in any of the ternary $R_2TX_3$ ($\textit{R}$ = rare earth, $\textit{T}$ = transition elements, and $\textit{X}$ = Si, Ge, In) type compounds. Due to the competing character of the itinerant 3$\textit{d}$ and localized 4$\textit{f}$ moments, the compound exhibits anomalous field dependence of magnetic coercivity. Further, the system also exhibits a considerable magnetic entropy change of –Δ$S_M$ ~ 13.3 J/kg K with a relative cooling power (RCP) of 220 J/kg and adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\text{ad}}$ of 6 K for magnetic field change of 70 kOe.

Magnetocaloric response with significant mechanical efficiency in frustrated intermetallic compound $\mathrm{Pr_{2}Co_{0.86}Si_{2.88}}$

We report magnetically frustrated materials are considered as a promising unconventional members of caloric materials. Here, the magnetocaloric properties of the frustrated Pr 2 Co 0.86 Si 2.88 have been investigated and discussed with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The material exhibits a magnetic entropy change (-ΔS M ) of 13.1 J/kg-K for ΔH = 70 kOe around low-temperature transition T L ~ 4 K associated with the antiferromagnetic coupling between localized Pr-4f and itinerant Co-3d moments. Despite the absence of any long-range magnetic order, the obtained - ΔS M is one of the highest among the known Pr-based good magnetocaloric materials at cryogenic temperature range. It also exhibits a relative cooling power (RCP) of ~ 201 J/kg and an adiabatic temperature change of 6.3 K around T L at 70 kOe. Moreover, the compound also exhibits a high mechanical efficiency and moderate electrical efficiency, being beneficial for possible technological applications.

Contrasting magnetic properties of polymorphic TbPt 3

Here, in this work, we report the contrasting magnetic behaviour of a bimorphic intermetallic compound TbPt 3 that undergoes a structural phase transformation from cubic AuBe 5 -type structure to the cubic AuCu 3 -type structure on annealing at high temperature for a very short time. The magnetic ground state configuration of TbPt 3 changes from ferromagnetic (FM) in AuBe 5 -type crystalline phase to antiferromagnetic (AFM) in AuCu 3 -type phase. However, the AFM ground state of the AuCu 3 -type compound is unstable, as a moderate magnetic field can induce the FM character through metamagnetic transformation. To understand the said crystallographic as well as magnetic transformations, structural and magnetic ab-initio calculations have been carried out for both phases. From theoretical calculations we have proposed that although the AuBe 5 -type structure of TbPt 3 irreversibly transforms to the AuCu 3 -type TbPt 3 by a very short heat treatment, the application of moderate magnetic field on AuCu 3 -type structure may result in recovering the magnetic properties of AuBe 5 -type structure of TbPt 3 . As the two different polymorphs exist simultaneously at ambient condition, TbPt 3 thus provides us a great opportunity to study directly the effect of crystal structure on its physical properties and vice versa.

Complex magnetic properties associated with competing local and itinerant magnetism in \({\text {Pr}}_2 {\text {Co}}_{0.86} {\text {Si}}_{2.88}\)

Ternary intermetallic compound \({\text {Pr}}_2 {\text {Co}}_{0.86} {\text {Si}}_{2.88}\) has been synthesized in single phase and characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis, magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation/relaxation ( \(\mu\) SR) measurements. The polycrystalline compound was synthesized in single phase by introducing necessary vacancies in Co/Si sites. Magnetic, heat capacity, and zero-field neutron diffraction studies reveal that the system undergoes magnetic transition below \(\sim\) 4 K. Neutron diffraction measurement further reveals that the magnetic ordering is antiferromagnetic in nature with an weak ordered moment. The high temperature magnetic phase has been attributed to glassy in nature consisting of ferromagnetic clusters of itinerant (3 d ) Co moments as evident by the development of internal field in zero-field \(\mu\) SR below 50 K. The density-functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the low temperature magnetic transition is associated with antiferromagnetic coupling between Pr 4 f and Co 3 d spins. Pr moments show spin fluctuation along with unconventional orbital moment quenching due to crystal field. The evolution of the symmetry and the crystalline electric field environment of Pr-ions are also studied and compared theoretically between the elemental Pr and when it is coupled with other elements such as Co. The localized moment of Pr 4 f and itinerant moment of Co 3 d compete with each other below \(\sim\) 20 K resulting in an unusual temperature dependence of magnetic coercivity in the system.

Studies on magnetocaloric effect of Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 compound

A comparative study has been carried out on the magnetocaloric properties of as-cast and annealed Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 intermetallic compound. While the as-cast material exhibits ferromagnetic cluster-glass behaviour below 9.9 K coexisting with antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction, the annealed system shows AFM ordering below 13.5 K and spin freezing occurs below 4 K. The compound exhibits moderate magnetocaloric performance with maximum isothermal entropy changes (–ΔS M ) 8.8 and 10.9 J kg –1 K –1 , relative cooling power (RCP) 306 and 365 J kg –1 , along with adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) 5.5 and 8.15 K for 70 kOe magnetic field change in as-cast and annealed forms, respectively. The estimated magnetic entropy change is found to be larger for annealed sample in comparison to that of as-cast analogue. However, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of –ΔS M (T) behaviour is larger in as-cast compound due to the presence of inherent structural disorder which reduces with thermal annealing. A positive isothermal entropy change (–ΔS M ) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) is observed for the as-cast compound in the measured field and temperature region. In contrast, the annealed system exhibits inverse magnetocaloric effect in the low field and temperature region where AFM interactions dominate. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is used as a tool to establish a subtle correlation between the observed magnetocaloric effect and the reported magnetic properties of the system.

Instability and evolution of the magnetic ground state in metallic perovskites GdRh 3 C 1-x B x

In this paper, we report investigations of the structural, magnetic, electrical transport and thermal properties of five compositions of the metallic perovskite GdRh 3 C 1–x B x (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 1.00). Our results show that all the five compositions undergo magnetic ordering at low temperatures, but the nature of the ordered state is significantly different in the carbon- and the boron-rich compositions, where the former shows signatures of an amplitude-modulated magnetic structure and the latter exhibits evidences of an equal-moment incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. We also observe a remarkable field-dependent evolution of conduction carrier polarization in the compositionally disordered compounds. The outcomes indicate that this system is energetically situated in proximity to a magnetic instability where small variations in the control parameter(s), such as lattice constant and/or electron density, lead to considerably different ground states.

Modification of magnetic ground state in Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 by thermal annealing

In this work, we have investigated the thermal annealing effect on the physical properties of an AlB 2 -type ternary intermetallic compound, Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 , that undergoes spin freezing behaviour coexisting with spatially limited antiferromagnetic phase below 9.9 K in as-cast form. Thermal annealing effect is found to result in considerable changes in the magnetic ground state properties of the system. Though only one magnetic transition around 9.9 K is observed for as-cast compound, the annealed sample exhibits two distinct magnetic transitions; one around T N ~ 13.5 K and another around T f ~ 4 K. The magnetization measurements and zero field neutron diffraction study reveal that the high temperature transition is antiferromagnetic type, though of limited correlation length, while the low temperature transition corresponds to spin freezing behaviour. The ac susceptibility and heat capacity studies also confirm the existence of frustrated cluster glass state at lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Additionally, ac susceptibility data exhibits signature of an additional peak in the even lower temperature region (at 2.2 K for zero frequency) that tends to shift in opposite direction with frequency in contrast to that observed for conventional glassy transitions. The change in intrinsic local structural disorder of Ni and Si ions associated with annealing has been argued to be responsible for the different magnetic behaviour in as-cast and annealed samples.

Resistivity and magnetoresistance properties of R 2 NiSi 3 (R = Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) compounds

The resistivity and magnetoresistance behaviour of the hexagonal intermetallic compounds R 2 NiSi 3 (R = Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) are reported here. All the studied polycrystalline compounds exhibit metallic behavior along with additional magnetic anomalies at low temperatures. A well-defined resistivity minima is observed in Gd 2 NiSi 3 and Dy 2 Ni 0.87 Si 2.95 at a temperature much higher than their respective magnetic transition temperatures. The anomaly has been ascribed to the charge carrier localization caused by magnetic precursor effect. Magnetic field induced crossover from positive to negative magnetoresistance (MR) behavior associated with antiferromagnetic ground state is evidenced for Gd 2 NiSi 3 and Er 2 NiSi 3 in the low temperature region. Although Tm 2 Ni 0.93 Si 2.93 does not exhibit any long range magnetic order down to 2 K, a sudden drop in resistivity behavior is observed below ~10 K. Furthermore, presence of short range magnetic correlation observed in a wide temperature range, much beyond their respective magnetic ordering temperatures, has been argued to be responsible for achieving finite negative MR for all the compounds. Additionally, a subtle resemblance between the observed transport anomalies and the magnetic properties of these systems has been discussed.
